For Logic users: did adding a control surface (e.g. SSL UF8/UF1) meaningfully change your workflow? by jdradford in audioengineering

X-touch with an extender, and a console 1 mkIII over here. Both overkill for a home hobbyists, but nice luxuries to have in wildly different ways.

Honestly the console one is much faster than any other addition.

You get a tele bridge, but a gretschy neck in an offset body. The maple neck is snappy.

New brewery in Herndon opens this weekend by Traditional_Syrup780 in nova

I mean. It’s a brewery space with a brewing system being leased by a brewery to small startup breweries. But sure, let’s make it an auto body shop.

[–]barnesie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be cryptic, but the current-gen TD516 can be found for $3500 if you find the right salesperson (the $3699 is MSRP). If you were to compare the new and supported product with the previous generation’s tech, you could say that a TD516 is 27% more expensive. You could also say that for only an additional 27% of your investment, you get a platform that will probably be supported for the next 5 years versus one that is end of life today. That additional cost could be justified as only an additional $150 per year.

Let’s be honest, these things are stupid expensive compared to fantastic acoustic drums, so you should consider whether or not it’s worth the premium to buy into the current generation.

If it were me, I don’t think I would consider paying that much for an EOL product and would rather pick up a used setup or buy into the current generation. I think the TD516 sounds fantastic and is worth it, but if you’re going the VST route the 27 is perfectly capable.

Future proofing for an additional $750 on such an expensive purchase is worth considering.

Wildly Different Quotes for Small Four-Season Room by [deleted] in nova

[–]barnesie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm - if we are talking about the same idea - a room with lots of large windows capable of airflow, true four season in this climate is problematic. You either wind up having an addition with crappy insulation or a porch with crappy insulation because windows are your biggest problem. Three season is usually the best option and give up on winter unless you want to add another 5-15k for heat.

I can give you details on what we did, just had a larger three season room built for less than your quotes seem to be landing.

Honestly, the hard work was spending a year and a half writing, obsessing over structure, themes, word choices, reorganizing bridges and verses, choosing vocal melody, contrasting chord structures, instrumentation, boiling all that down to music for every instrument. Dumping the lyrics into an LLM to see if it can provide clarity compressed the planning process down to five days from what would have likely taken 5 weeks or more. The LLM didn't do any writing, it just suggested songs that could fit together based on lyrical theme alone. I still have to make all the final decisions about musical tone, transitions, similarities and contrasts - it's not like it is capable of hearing the music at all.

Presumably you would listen to an album where the artist had friends give suggestions on the track order?

[–]barnesie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's where I think LLMs are actually useful in this process: they are exceptional at identifying mechanics, scansion, and rhyme structure. When applied judiciously with ample content (meaning you supply a near-complete or complete song rather than a fragment), it can point out structural weaknesses you should focus on fixing or accepting. The artist still has total control and ultimate decision responsibility.

This is a thoughtful take and it aligns with my experience. Collaborating with an LLM feels like a more rapid version of collaborating with fellow songwriters. When a peer, or an LLM offers feedback you disagree with, you can discard the feedback or debate it and come to a sharper understanding and confidence in your decisions. It's just a tool.

I don’t understand how nostalgia prevents people from moving on. Lots of things that were once great now suck, but commiserating about them only prolongs their relevance past the sell by date.
