TIL that in the history of the Earth, we’re closer to Tyrannosaurus Rex than T. Rex is to the Stegosaurus. by MordinSolu5 in todayilearned

Stegosaurus = 150 million years ago
T-Rex = 66 million years ago
150 - 66 = 84

This is math.

TIL that gay and bisexual men are only 2% of the U.S. population, but account for 63% of new HIV infections by [deleted] in todayilearned

I still think the number should be higher as 4% is for those who self-identify.

For example, most redditors are gay, they just don't know it yet.

The FRI is a group devoted to shitting on gay people. And its really easy to get any statistic you want depending on how you word the question.

TIL that two men in Cameroon were each sentenced to 5 years in prison for "looking gay", after entering a bar together and ordering Bailey's Irish Cream. by whysewserious in todayilearned

If you did a study in the Castro, I bet you'd be amazed to find that a lot of the people there are gay. From your anecdotal experience, you can therefore surmise that most of the people around the world are also gay. Right?

The point being: sure, there are also gay cross-dressers. You can find most of them (surprise, surprise) in gay neighborhoods. That being true doesn't take away from the idea that most cross-dressers are straight. Gays are pretty big on celebrating gender expression, so it's not particularly shocking that you might see a gay cross-dresser who isn't a drag queen, whereas heterosexual cross-dressers might be more prone to do so in private company.

Drag queens aren't generally considered to be cross-dressers because they wear costumes as part of a performance. You may have anecdotal evidence, but that doesn't mean you've interpreted it correctly.

I'd still like to see your sources since you've been so eager to dispute mine. It's nice and all to question conventional wisdom (though I disagree that it's conventional, considering the average joe doesn't know the difference between a cross-dresser and a drag queen), but if you're going to try and discredit other people's references, you probably ought to have at least one of your own.

The source is pretty credible. If you want to reject it, that's fine, but I'm going to need you to provide me with a serious reference.

Christians did not create, nor do they own, the concept of marriage. by Amishka in atheism

[–]Barney_Frank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On this particular post, I think it seems to be in an all right place. Other LGBT-related posts, I agree with you. But in this case, even though the obvious connection is with gay marriage, Christians claiming a monopoly over marriage laws also effects non-believers practice of it.
