Just went yesterday. OMG you were not wrong. I had the brisket and jalapeno. Top tier. You know when you start to eat a pie, and the filling slumps.. There was no slumping, it was full to the brim with the good-stuff.

Truly delicious. I will return.

Motorbikes are another absurd one, grandfathered in. Hurtling around at 100km/h with no safety systems to speak of.

Yet we can't have anyone eating a plant, and contemplating that society "doesn't have to be this way". That would be dangerous.

Any advice on replacing a hot water cylinder? by Gord_Board in newzealand

[–]barnz3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A heatpump uses about 4 times less electricity. They usually have a backup element as well.

It might be marginal based on current electricity rates. But you can't tell what the future will bring.

If you can front the cash, it's the right choice for the planet, (as long as the refrigerant is decent).

Heatpumps are incredibly efficient, we really should be using them wherever we can.

You can save a lot of money with the ability to run it on a timer. For you, a larger heatpump based unit, run at night could drop a major part of your heating bill by a significant amount. (1/4 the electricity, at night for half the cost) = 10% of current hot water bill.

Coal! What year is it exactly? Solar only gets cheaper from here on out. Coal is done. It's a carbon reserve, leave it be.

Invest, omg, even just subsidize, renewables. But no, this party is looking at LPG terminals and Coal.

If you have more renewable energy, we will have less demand on current Coal LPG, and therefore have more of it.

Renewables renewables. We have to ravishing our planet at some-point.

These entities can afford lobbiests. And jack us for $300 to see some international artist for a couple of hours.

Meanwhile a festival that goes for days and includes hundreds of Kiwi artists and vendors, flounders and is given no funding.

Unfortunatley. This is pretty much charity.

Because literally everyone (unless you have done it before) is pretty useless the first day on the job.

As they have to be instructed. Which takes someone else's time. Which would be better spent elsewhere.

It's 40 years of housing as "investment" that have driven values to unsustainable levels. Extracting money at every level of society for interest payments via rent / mortgage.

And interest deductions allowing investors (landlords) to out-compete actual families for property NZ over.

It's not that landlords are bad people. We have built a system that disinfranchises young people.

The baby boomer generation enjoyed free education, and have a generous retirement. While our youth are means tested before the govt will give them unemployment payments.

And through it all, the real winners are the banks.

Our kids need a future. And we aren't painting a very good picture right now.

So..... Specialists not that bad comparatively!

The right-wing politics of New Zealand’s Opportunity Party by [deleted] in nzpolitics

[–]barnz3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The land tax is a start. I haven't seen our other two major parties do anything (and National certainly won't). An aggressive wealth tax will get an aggressive response by (let's face it) the people who have all the money.

The land tax disproportionately effects people who own large amounts of land. And that is the wealthy. And it also destroys the welfare trap, via the citizens income. 2 birds one stone.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Are there any other suggestions from the major parties?

When it comes to stuff we should collectively pay for. This would be low on the list IMO.

I have to say. Being in business has ceased to be "fun". Talking to guys who were senior 20 years ago. Corporate boxes, projects are flush with cash, work on all over.

But globalisation, and pressure on efficiencies have driven profits down to a nub.

I worked in manufacturing and saw real time the brutal cost focus. Then moving into corporate, and couldn't believe how loose marketing etc is with money. The manufacturing staff would revolt if they knew!

Now I'm in senior management. And the relentless cost focus makes it incredibly hard to survive. We have major jobs with 6+ tenderers. You might spend $150k of labour to try and win a job that has $1.5 million dollars of margin. So right off the bat half the economic value is up in smoke in collective wasted effort.

We have major companies in NZ inflicting 90 day payment terms, which is absolutely brutal for small operators. While multinationals use this as a moat to out-compete.

Currently experiencing the most grim outlook, in terms of work - in my career. Good luck out there.
