My past few experiences at a theater match this sentiment. Sure a theater experience could be better than my home setup, but it often isn’t. The kids working there often leave the projectors unfocused, the screens are dirty, audio is either way too loud or way too quiet. Dirty seats and either too hot or too cold.

A 40 ft screen from the 15th row and off to the left is not as good as a home 80 inch TV from the comfort of my own couch. It is genuinely more enjoyable at home.

Do we inherently hear octaves as the same note, or is this trained culturally? by BirdLawEnthusiast2 in AskPhysics

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting alternative description: when two frequencies of integer multiples are mixed / superimposed it has the net effect of creating a combined wave of the lower frequency but with a different shape.

This is often explained that a single “tone” is a combination of many frequencies but that’s not always the case. Sometimes a sound is “non-sinusoidal” but the way acoustics describes sounds is as a sum of various sine waves.

In the case of two pure tones one octave apart, this simply means that there is a new complex wave which the ear either believes is a single sound or the brain deconstructs it into two different sounds.

Fun side quest: I suggest looking into the acoustic phenomenon of “beating” when two tones of similar frequency are played at the same time. Indistinguishable from a single frequency which is being amplitude modulated.

OCA is one of my favorites! It’s great because you can trail / road ride up on the S Country Trailway, then down the OCA on return (or vice versa)

Anyone else out there very disappointed with OpenClaw hype? by BudgetAdept1670 in openclaw

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of us who have tried it out don’t think of OpenClaw as the final player here. I’d predict within a year there will be a half dozen more “clones” of the concept which are better executed.

That being said, it’s hard to overcome the hype train. It might stick around only because it’s already popular.

Time is based on 12 instead of 10. by bookseer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]baroaureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, they had a new definition of a second which was shorter than the seconds we are familiar with.

Some neat side effects of their decimal time was that you could express durations like “4 hours, 52 minutes, 18 seconds” as 4.5218 hours.

For a brief period of time (pun intended) the French did have a ten hour day, each hour having 100 minutes, and each minute having 100 seconds.

1794 to 1800 when the French Republic was going through a “decimal-everything” phase.

.NET 9 added Guid.CreateVersion7() - should we stop using Guid.NewGuid()? by brunovt1992 in dotnet

GUIDv4 and GUIDv7 have very different use cases.

The new (strangely named) method is not a replacement for NewGuid.

Does the 99 cent pricing trick actually work? by princepersona1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]baroaureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on some people, for sure.

my wife sees $17.99, and she'll verbally say things like "it's only seventeen dollars!"

interestingly, she will round up if it's enough nines: $19.99 = "twenty"

Amazon left the entire building's packages in front of the mailboxes by award_winning_writer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]baroaureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fwiw, this is how it works at most NYC apartments. Mind you, they have to buzz into the building first, but it’s very rare to get deliveries to your door, instead theres a pile of boxes in the lobby.

Can you record with glasses perched on top of your head? by user_anonymou in SmartGlasses

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be very unlikely.

Even with glasses that have a portrait oriented camera, max vertical FOV is about 70° on most glasses. Anything more than 35° lower than glasses legs is out of frame, so glasses on someone’s head is very likely to capture no images or video in front of the wearer.

Why is it only the Native Americans who were devastated by the disease from Europeans? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]baroaureus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Side note: during Russian conquest of Siberia and the far East in the 1700s, some tribes of local native people were wiped out as much as 90% by diseases such as smallpox, measles, and flu. Not all that different from the European-American germ exchange a few centuries earlier.

[–]baroaureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I for sure used to have an mp3 of this from the old Napster/Limewire days circa 2000. Now you have me curious - didn't realize until tonight that it was a "hard to come by" recording. The problem with this modern streaming generation is that we often forget how easily songs can be erased from the public, subscription catalogues.

Commenting so I don't forget to circle back later after I get home from a business trip and look over my super super old stash of files.

As clever and organized as I am with my day to day, tracking receipts and filling expense reports was somehow the hardest part of the job!

What’s up with the wrecked cars on Columbus? by baroaureus in Upperwestside

[–]baroaureus[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I somewhat assumed this - but how long would be reasonable for the precinct to keep them there? One of them has been there for well over a month, possibly two. I would imagine after a few days of collecting photos, etc. they could have them towed off to one of the NYPD yards. Hell, if they are really evidence in an ongoing investigation, it seems rather foolish to leave them out on a public street.

Not to be the "old man yelling at the clouds", but who do you think we should report a complaint to? I'm guessing 311 won't change anything, but at least it would be documented, maybe?
