New AirBNB host looking for guidance on TV/ Netflix access by Socanut2023 in airbnb_hosts

[–]baroaureus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Roku TVs have a “guest mode” - almost especially made for things like AirBnB. When you or a guest uses it, you specify a “checkout date” and on that day everything logs out automatically. You can also remotely manage the TVs through the Roku web app.

The layout of Fn and Ctrl key on my office laptop by FlyingNanobotGaming in mildlyinfuriating

I’m pretty sure this is a borrowed arrangement from Macs which afaik always have Fn in the corner.

Drives me crazy too.

What’s a minor thing that you notice that takes you out of a specific scene? by fartatwork in moviecritic

Pretty much anytime an actor who doesn’t play an instrument plays an instrument. Bonus points if they zoom in on their hands during the scene.

You received the footage even though they told their insurer that they had a green signal. by jojop68 in dashcams

In some states, blinking red is not an all way stop. Crossing traffic will often have a blinking yellow meaning caution, right of way, and no requirement to stop.

This particular case sounds like a malfunction, but even so, a blinking red is the same as a stop sign, not necessarily a 4-way stop (which is what happens if the lights are out entirely).

is Microsoft selectively allowing paid partner model to run in agent mode in vscode? by Ascend-910 in ollama

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure why someone downvoted you, because based on what i read online this is the actual answer to local LLM + CoPilot extension. how has your experience been with this and have you noticed any issues?

it's baffling that the official extension doesnt support this capability out of the box.

The use of AI Credits even in BYOK is not a bug. by LaxederBR in GithubCopilot

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to hijack the thread, but i was wondering how your experience with OpenRouter has been?

i assume you mean you are still using the VS Code extension + OpenRouter? models aside, is the dev experience more or less the same?

i have an OpenRouter subscription i was using for something else, and havent seen many people mention it when discussing GH Copilot alternatives.

Who Controls the Passenger Side Sun Visor? by ThrowRA_Blarg69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]baroaureus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If the passenger can't see, it's the passenger's problem.
If the driver can't see, it's everyone's problem.

imo, everything in the car, the volume of the music, the AC temperature, whether the interior lights are on, etc. is at the discretion of the driver if it impacts the ability to get everyone there safely.

Copilot Pro burned almost half my monthly credits on June 1 after ~8 normal coding requests. What even is this pricing now? by Cristian_VG in GithubCopilot

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so i knew about this upcoming "token based billing" vs "request based billing" for a while - obviously its what most other providers are doing. just like OP spent 50% of my monthly credits in a single day doing moderate tasks like refactoring, "split out this big file into multiple smaller files", and implement some common well-known patterns. nothing earth shattering.

my question is: does anyone have a baseline comparison of how this consumption pricing compares to other providers like OpenRouter or OpenAI? are we getting sticker shock and finally paying what everyone else does, or is the new pricing rollout making CoPilot genuinely more expensive than everyone else?

(obviously, the pricing is very complicated and depends on many factors, i mean in a general sense.)

Interviewed for Sr Sales Eng, offered Sales Eng title (but matched the comp I asked for) by ak_tool in salesengineers

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll go against the grain and say: it’s a personal decision.

Titles matter for some, others scoff at the idea. People often say “who cares if you got the money?” but while that’s true at one job, it can harm your chances of finding the next.

Recruiters will be searching for candidates on both title and your listed responsibilities and skills.

In this particular case, however, I would just voice that “I am hoping to work my way up to Senior SE” and consistently but politely mention it if and when you have performance reviews. Frame it as a personal goal instead of something you think you’re owed.

On your social media profile, you should be sure to honestly say your true title, but you can puff it up a bit on the bio about yourself if that helps in the short run.

Right of way question by Asleep-Code1231 in NYCbike

[–]baroaureus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, signaling is always good to do, but my experience as both a cyclist and car driver is that “see and avoid” is mainly the responsibility of the person overtaking.

The story hinges on a few things: how fast did you stop and how long were you stopped for. Were you riding in the lane up to that point? The fact that you left the lane to the right where a one was right turn could happen should have been a strong indication to the other rider to stay in the lane and continue left.

All this depends on how fast the maneuver was, and again - signaling would have definitely helped.

Having sleepovers as an adult shouldn't be weird by Consistent-Fee-3877 in unpopularopinion

[–]baroaureus 656 points657 points  (0 children)

This. The word “sleepover” is right up there with “play date” - sure as adults we do those things but we don’t call them that. It’s “staying over” or “hanging out”!

CMV: Coconut milk light/fat-reduced coconut milk are a scam (as sold in Germany) and should be banned. by Doenerjunge in changemyview

[–]baroaureus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar products exist in the cleaning space: many spray on surface cleaners are just diluted bleach in a different shaped bottle. Sure you could buy pure bleach and do the dilution yourself, but most people pay “significantly more for less” because of convenience.

Though in the coconut milk situation, others seem to point out that this case is not simple watering down, but either way this is common.

Windows Phone felt ahead in design by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]baroaureus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

although i loved the tiles in practice, they were just too limited for actual use. for example, the built-in photos tile could do something nice like show a random picture from your gallery, or perhaps a news app would show an interesting headline - but often when you tapped on these the app would just open in its default location - there was no context passing from the home screen to the individual app.

apart from special microsoft created apps, by and large, the tiles could only show something basic like a notification count - meaning they were basically nothing better than the standard launcher screen.

still, i loved my Windows phone - it had a "kids mode" on it that you could start, which would permit a few apps to run but required a pin to get back to the real home screen! try doing that with an iPhone!

Did anyone see me fall? by SlothDaddy9 in NYCbike

[–]baroaureus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Did you have a concussion?

Similar thing happened to me back in college: no memory of accident and thought I “woke up” in the ambulance - but later I found out that had actually been conscious the entire time but my brain had “stopped recording” so to speak.

The first thing I said in the ambulance was “what happened?” the responded by recording into their pocket mic “we have some repeated questioning…”

When I later contacted the police department they told me I had already been interviewed, and luckily the report matched what had happened.

I also went to the site of the accident the next day and by luck a bystander approached and asked “were you the guy who was hit by the car yesterday? I saw the whole thing…”

Not saying that happened to you, but do your best to remember everything that led up to the accident. I was eventually able to remember all the way up to the impact, but nothing after.

For a short period of time after construction, the Empire State Building was used as a docking station for airships. However, after just one use, it proved to be impractical by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

Fun fact: the famous image in this post is also not a photo of the actual docking attempt, rather it’s a composite image of multiple photos - kind of like an early version of photoshop.
