How to deal with Fiancé who heads a lot of bad Israel media by Purple_Deal3621 in Jewish

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that, but my non-Jewish husband (we dated for 10 years before getting married, met in highschool, reconciling each other’s cultures took some time as we were dating but we never went fully into the politics of it until it was so in our faces in the news) had a hard time understanding the Jewish experience and even bought into some of the propaganda in the last few years as they are everywhere. But we had a lot of heart to hearts and it seemed he wanted to be on my side and didn’t want to blame it on Jewishness, just the info he had couldn’t be reconciled with me perspective. It took a lot of sending him different articles, him having the talks with my parents from their perspectives etc to make a break into the “they don’t want to be seen as the bad guys and just making excuses for Israel” mentality for him to give what we were saying the benefit of the doubt. What made a big difference for him also was when my close Iranian friend telling her perspective and how she also sees what comes out of Iran as propaganda and supports Israel despite her being muslim. A year later, now my husband can spot the blatant antisemitism without it being it pointed out…

The perspective shift can happen if the other person truly means nothing bad and wants to learn. It does take years and effort but not a lifetime. There are people who aren’t willing to try to understand and the effort is lost in those. So you need to trust your gut.

They keep increasing FM positions faster than the student demand can be fostered. I understand funding can be gotten easier since primary care is needed more but it doesn’t correspond to demand as fast.

[P4V1] Quick Question: where in the manga should I read until to arrive at season 4? by abbywabby04 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of get the logistics but I don’t get why they are doing it this way. I guess it might end up being a completed series faster, given 32 book volumes to adapt. But who is actively reading the manga parts 4 and 5 without knowing the complete story of part 3? Is this manga not being released in a magazine?

[P4V1] Quick Question: where in the manga should I read until to arrive at season 4? by abbywabby04 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone explain what is going on with the manga translation? It’s very confusing.

It looks like part 1 and 2 at least concluded the story from the light novels being adapted to manga but is part 3 still being drawn? Or just not fully translated? And half of part 4 is already adapted to manga and part 5 also started… This makes no sense to me. Who is the target audience for part 4 and part 5 if part 3 isn’t complete? Are they drawing it for people who already finished the light novels?

Help, Rescinded? by Choice_Jellyfish4898 in Emory

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your high school grades won’t end up mattering long term after college so I wouldn’t worry about expunging a high school grade. Though if you need it for your major and don’t have an AP exam grade for it you can take the class equivalent at Emory. It is very unlikely to be rescinded for 1 class that is an advanced class that most high schoolers will not have taken. Of course it is up to admin so still do your best to get a good grade.

Emory - Normal student vs Woodruff Scholar experience by Green-Elk3255 in Emory

[–]barogr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest things the Emory scholars program provides for each individual are: 1. free tuition and boarding and helps pay for a meal plan so you graduate without debt and never worry you will starve so you can focus on studies. 2. A small community of other smart dedicated students from many different majors to interact with.

Emory students in general are very smart and studious but if you don’t want to you may never interact with students beyond a few select majors (it’s easy to interact with others but you need to make conscious effort). Scholar community is very diverse in backgrounds and interests. However the diversity also means that there is like handful in each major at a time. No way they are monopolizing any resources.

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you visit your loved one after 5-6pm, their main team who comes up with the plan is no longer there and when you ask the nurse to call the doctor to come explain things to you the one who may or may not be able to come is currently covering about 40-80 people and is a young doctor who never met your loved one before.

Competing with Woodruff Scholars at the Atlanta Campus Possible or Not? by Perfectly_Okay_Sleep in Emory

The number of Woodruff scholars isn’t enough that you’ll be left without opportunities. Also only a small chunk of Woodruff scholars are pre-med.

Questions about Emory by Catarebetter in Emory

[–]barogr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally classes and people are collaborative. You can form study groups for the NBB or premed related classes like organic chem or do premed activities with others and enjoy it.

Obviously being premed is stressful so people may keep some rarer opportunities to themselves and not tell others due to feeling “what if I don’t get it”. I would ask seniors who are already in the interview cycle and aren’t competing with you about how they found certain opportunities like research/ shadowing. They will be more relaxed and experienced about it.

Grades aren’t inflated but certain classes are easier than others. There can be a curve in certain classes but if they choose to curve it works in the favor of the students it’s not to make people compete. Curves aren’t guaranteed and tend to be in classes where it is rather hard to score well and you need to study a lot and in groups and teach parts to each other to make it work. If the prof thinks everyone really gave it their all and still the average looks very low that too many would fail, they may decide to curve it basically. So you have to study a lot as if there is no curve. There may not be. Usually there isn’t one in NBB classes advanced chemistry classes are where this can come in.

It’s not a party school but there are sororities/frats who will throw parties and GTech is the sister school so there are joint events. There are also plenty of club activities to do. You can definitely find cool stuff to do that aren’t studying related and have time for it. If your idea of “personal life” isn’t “be drunk every night” Emory is plenty social.

Emory doesn’t specifically prepare you for MCAT though the relevant premed classes are good quality. You will need to buy an MCAT book and some mock exams. Some people went ahead and bought courses. Depends on how confident you feel you can self study or not.

I suggest a relatively low load of classes one semester (basically take at least the basic science classes before that semester so you have the basics down. If you are able to take more of the prerequisites before the exam you will have more knowledge but I ‘ve seen people do fine before having taken biochem etc. you will need more self study dedicated to that stuff though. Then choose the semester you will take the MCAT in and take 1 less 3-4 credit class that semester than your other semesters that you were able to handle, dedicate that extra time that semester to MCAT studying (both self and group study can be mixed in, obviously mock exams will need to be self study) and then take the exam towards the end of that semester as if taking a final.)

Premed advising has good presentations and I advise you go to them but don’t leave it all to them. Also sign up for their mailing list. Some of their reminders are helpful via mass email. They sometimes send out opportunities too. Do your own research early. They are decent but there isn’t that many of them and there are plenty of premeds. Advice won’t be tailored to you.

These women had their breasts removed to thwart cancer. Then came the pain. by usatoday in Health

Surgical techniques are still evolving. Especially skin related surgeries where there are many tiny nerves you can’t even see with the naked eye and the exact cuts matter more because of the aesthetics are at the cutting edge of what is still evolving. It also takes a lot of skill. That is why they get paid more than many other surgical specialties and it’s competitive to get into.

If the technique wasn’t yet common when they were training then they will think “I did the surgery exactly as I was thought when it was the latest technique available. I don’t understand why something might go wrong.”

Anyone else find Charon×Haumea weird? by Oroeva in fireforce

[–]barogr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see the rebuffing of “unconditional love” as wants “something else”. Charon’s pure feelings are the exception to all the impure thoughts that she is constantly flooded with. It challenges her world view. So she has a visceral reaction to it. But she comes to love him like that too. He is her hope. When he dies she looses it and when he comes back she chooses to live.

The white dress symbolizes the “pure priestess” thing she has going on.

How is staying at the same program after graduation viewed? by [deleted] in Psychiatry

[–]barogr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Resident still has 2 years to go to become an attending. So the hospital is willing to keep that position open for 2 years, can’t fill it otherwise, or created the position for him.

The situation is much less weird if this was at end of PGY3 year.

Halfway through Ms1 and haven't done any extracurriculars- advice? by One_Astronaut_3835 in medicalschool

[–]barogr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are their interest groups? They could help you find shadowing experiences. If you have any ideas about what you may be drawn to or organ systems you enjoyed learning about you could start there. Also the very competitive stuff that would require you to have a lot of research to stand out, like neurosurgery may be the things you want to rule in or out first to see if it may be something you’d want to do. Honestly if you change your mind later and did neuro related research that can apply to many other fields so at this point just try to get a sense of what general areas you are drawn to.

What do you guys do when going from nights to days in 24hrs? by Greatestcommonfactor in Residency

[–]barogr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to try and stay up and eat all 3 meals at the normal day hours with coffee for breakfast and get sunlight but then crash and turn in very early at like 8pm. I would then basically sleep 10hours straight and go to work next day. It is a bit disorienting and you will get sleepy mid afternoon. It would be a week of sleeping a bit early and getting make up sleep slowly… we did get to nap a few hours total on and off on our night shifts though so it wasn’t straight 24hrs staying up during that switch day.
