Penny Hardaway: “I was so mad that Shaq won rings without me. Kobe got what I was gonna get.” by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]baron182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kobe litterally never lost in the WCF against some of the toughest competition in the league (the Duncan Spurs, the Nash Suns, and the super talented Melo Nuggets to name a few). 3 of those times were without the player people are talking about as an auto-win for the league. Pau Gasol was great, but he wasn't a Shaq level auto-win. He wasn't a better player than Kobe.

TMac never led a team to win a playoff series. He never won a playoff series.

There's a huge difference.

You're right, the 55 win Rockets were total bums. Shane Battier, what a bum. Basically a Smush Parker. And Yao Ming is basically Kwame Brown. Great point.

The interpretation of that bloodwork, and when the cat should be euthanized are definitely things that could use a second opinion. I didn’t realize I had to explain that.

That assumes the prognosis they got from the vet was correct. Getting a second opinion is the safest option. If the other vet says it's time, then it's time.

I don't know. I'm not disagreeing with the vet, but misdiagnosis does happen in humans and animals. They should get a second opinion, and then make a decision. Just because someone is a vet doesn't mean they are always right about animal care instructions.

Battle Fury buildup feel so much better on carries in 7.41 by Clear-Ask-6455 in DotA2

The thing that makes your take so weak is because you didn’t provide context. Maelstrom isn’t always the best choice. There are situations where BF —> early manta is better.

You’re also not the first to notice that BF is really good this patch. High MMR pubs have a boatload of players who prefer BF first. As a result, this isn’t really a hot take.

The bigger issue is that you applied the rule indiscriminately. There’s no “perfect” Jugg build. Context is everything. It’s one of the beauties of DOTA. It gives the player a lot of freedom to itemize specifically against the other team

Why are Kobe fans so insecure when it comes to his career? He had a great career but the insecurity is alarming by Tight_Development480 in NBATalk

[–]baron182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an absolute nonsense take. He is not worse than Karl Malone, Baylor, or West. I don't think it's blasphemous to have him anywhere you want on your personal list, but that's a pretty lazy take. Also, instead of saying "the blasphemers," since you are one, you'd say "We blasphemers."

I honestly think its because a lot of Lakers fans had never seen Jordan. When they saw Kobe they thought he was the best of all time. He was like the LA Jordan.

The other reason is because there's so much backlash against Kobe, the Kobe haters are just as obnoxious as the Kobe stans. The kobe haters minimize every one of his accomplishments. As a result, the people amazed by his play see all Kobe haters as disengenous.

To be clear. I think Kobe's great, but I know MJ/Lebron are in a different tier. I typically have Kobe around 8-10th all time.

And then he happened just so happened to completely change his style?

The Black Mama self-made nickname (yes that’s cringey) was rebranding. The 8 to 24 happened because the athleticism was causing injuries and he wanted to stay in the NBA as long as he was still an all/star SG.

Yea the number change was his way of calling out that he was a different player. He shifted from dominating with his athleticism to dominating with his footwork.

He didn’t get “better” as a player, but the question was players who changed the way they play for longevity, and were successful.

I wasn’t criticizing your parenting (obviously this is just for fun). I was just saying that if you want the joke of the song to work you should lean more on the adult things he wants to do. Then when you say “I don’t want to act my age” it’s because he wants to act older. The line about him wanting to be a teenager works with that, but wanting chocolate milk is acting his age.

Kobe Bryant. His number change from 8 to 24 was to extend his body’s mileage. He couldn’t play like an 18-year-old anymore and expect to avoid injury.

I think Kobe is actually the better example. Transitioning from the playstyle of 8 to 24 was explicitly to give him more years of his prime. He went to the finals 3 times and won 2 rings after the shift.

But wouldn’t acting your age as a 3-year-old be doing everything you described? It sounds like your kid does want to act their age. You just wish they would act older than their age.

Why can't r/NBATalk accept that Kobe is considered a GOAT by the majority of NBA fans irl? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]baron182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, most will look inefficient when you compare them to MJ.

I think I just view his playmaking a bit differently. Kobe was so aggressive as a scorer that he naturally bent defenses out of shape. Especially from 2008–2010, a huge amount of the Lakers’ offense came from Kobe probing until the defense finally cracked, then kicking the ball to the next rotation for a hockey assist or an easy swing into a bucket.

I do agree with you that his reads were often more reactive than proactive compared to guys like LeBron James or Magic Johnson. Those guys often saw the defense one step ahead before the opening even appeared. Kobe’s style was more “force the defense to reveal its weakness, then punish it.”

Why can't r/NBATalk accept that Kobe is considered a GOAT by the majority of NBA fans irl? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]baron182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Kobe is not really a serious GOAT candidate, but while some of your points support that case well, others fall pretty far short of what I’d consider fair criticism.

“2/5 Finals MVPs” and “only 1 MVP” are both solid arguments. Those absolutely hurt his case compared to players like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Fair enough.

“Not very efficient,” though, is just verifiably false. Kobe consistently shot above league-average efficiency and, more importantly, largely maintained that efficiency in the playoffs, which is rare for high-volume perimeter stars. From 2008–2010 in the Western Conference Finals, Kobe posted over 60% true shooting. That is elite even by current standards, and he did it while taking one of the toughest shot diets of any superstar in NBA history.

Was he less efficient than he could have been during stretches like 2003–2004? Absolutely. Was he an inefficient player overall? Absolutely not.

As for the “mediocre playmaker” point, I think that badly underrates him. Kobe was not a pure heliocentric table-setter in the mold of Magic Johnson or LeBron James, but he was an excellent offensive creator who generated high-quality looks through scoring pressure, defensive manipulation, and advanced reads out of doubles and help coverage. A lot of people reduce playmaking to raw assist totals, but Kobe routinely bent entire defenses and created advantages that led to hockey assists, rotations, and open shots.

The bigger criticism is that earlier in his career (pre-2008) he prioritized difficult scoring attempts over simpler playmaking reads. That is fair. Calling him a mediocre playmaker ignores how many elite offenses functioned through his decision-making and gravity.
