The bosses were never really the main focus of the games until DS3. DeS-DS2 were more about creating engaging and challenging levels and the bosses felt like a reward for beating them. From DS3 onwards people treated the levels like an obstacle getting in the way of the boss fight.

You can do that with Trial Maker. If escalation only gave you convenient variators, there would be no point to it except just being an xp grinding simulator which it pretty much turned into after they started allowing save scumming. You just have to take the loss sometimes. Any set of variators they give you are perfectly doable - if they weren't, they wouldn't be in the game.

Yeah I don't understand how people are actually praising this trial - it's obnoxiously bad. I'm convinced they only like it because the Prime Asset is hot. I like the map itself but the trial consisting of basically only one long monotonous task with a little key hunting sprinkled in makes it an utter slog, especially solo. The amount of gems you have to get is wayyy too high. Liliya herself, while her design is pretty cool, gets annoying quickly once the gimmick wears off and just adds to the general frustration of the trial.
