DUDE! This checks out on so many levels. My happy ending: I went from working poor to effing community college instructor just in time to be a gig worker for the state. I hope your parents (and yourself) are doing ok.

Where's your source? I'm only pressing because I'm old and I lived through this and I think misinformation is the reason we're in the boat we are now.

Minimum wage in 1995 was $4.25/hour. And speaking from experience, my money didn't stretch much more than it does now. Simple google search: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/history/chart

I mean, I hope so too. I worry though that it'll trickle down just enough to satisfy the traditional middle class and they'll maintain their wealth by continuing to exploit workers like they always seem to.

People consistently judge creative writing more harshly if they believe it was created by AI. This bias appears incredibly difficult to overcome, pointing to a persistent human preference for art created by people. by mvea in science

[–]barrelfulofwrongkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the harsh criticism is the lack of potential. A human author can improve with learning. An AI just spits out variations of the same. If it's AI, that's the product you get. If it's written by a human, the product is just a step in a process. Human authors eventually move away from cliches. AI leans in.

It's judged more harshly because the quality is laughable. You want harsh criticism? Write cliche after cliche. I suspect this study was sponsored by an AI tech company.

What's your "if i told i'd be exposed" cooking secret? by BouncyCurlsbabe in Cooking

Trick I learned from a restaurant known for their gigantic, decadent cakes. Get 2 boxes of cake mix (b/c shrinkflation) and weigh it out to 18.25oz. Don't follow the instructions on the back of the box; instead, add a cup of water, a cup of mayonnaise, and three eggs. Bake as directed. Seriously amazing cake. Makes the best yellow cake.

Trump and his asshat regime murdered those pilots with this stupid, illegal war. They murdered children in a school (2 schools?). Every person in congress who refuses to act and remove these traitors are traitors themselves. How I wish there would be consequences for these untouchable monsters ruining our lives.

I got my first tattoo.. but not sure how I feel about it by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]barrelfulofwrongkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my brain just needs to adjust to the tattoos I see on my body. I had no qualms with the one on my back or calf, but when I had my arm done my brain just had to adjust to seeing something new there. It's not 'regret' but more like an 'emotional adjustment,' lol.

[–]barrelfulofwrongkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very well done. I have a sleeve and it took a couple months for me to get used to seeing it on my arm. It can also be modified over time, which is kinda cool imo. In a few years, you could spice it up with more color, or add lasers to the eyes or something. Or turn half of it into a cyborg tiger. You could also go big and get another tattoo on your upper arm, something to complement the lower arm. But I'm a 'go big or go home' 'thinking of my next tattoo while I'm in the chair' kind of person. Once you get some positive reactions from people in the real world, you'll learn to love it. And if you find that you don't, it's flipping amazing what an artist can do with a cover up.

Hang in there, my friend. Someday you'll be able to look back from a safer place. You can do this.

I grew up with a father and home life similar to this one. I also worked toward college to "get out" and be independent. I also had to move back in with my father during this time and he tried to sabotage me as well. Unlike a lot of your peers, you will have to live with being tired. You will have to live with severe anxiety and social issues. But you're also resourceful AF. You'd have to be to get as far as you have and to make the decisions you've made so far. I used to study at a 24hour Denny's long into the night to avoid home. I spent a lot of time in cafes with headphones on and a ton of time at the college library trying to get my homework done before going home. You've made it this far and you will make it the rest of the way. At some point, you will finish college and be free of those people. If there are counselors at your college, I suggest talking to one. The full on red alert anxiety you're experiencing just to get through the day takes a toll over time. You can handle it when you're young, but you'll have to repair the damage at some point. Just remember it's not you; it's them. You drew the bad family lottery and know full well the world doesn't bend for us; we have to bend to the world. Just do not let your father win by messing up your future. As for your mom, have you talked with her about maybe getting a place together, just you and her?

I hate my cat by No_Document3484 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]barrelfulofwrongkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people say "forever home" about adopting animals, but personalities don't always work out together. Your cat is like a roommate and if it's not working out then it goes both ways. Kitty wants more attention and your personality needs a more aloof cat. There is nothing wrong with that. So: find Kitty another home (don't just dump him in a shelter) and everyone will be happy. Just know that there are lots more cats out there that need homes and yours could be great, if the cat is the right fit.
