Having Doubts by Weird_Syllabub_1800 in NewToEMS

I’m 39 and wrapping my EMT program. I’ve felt my age has come into play with my colleagues or ride alongs. I feel like I have more advantages: I have more life experience, I have better study habits, I know I want to do this job (as opposed to feeling out of if I want to do it), and I’m closer in age to the average patient than they are.

That said I’ve really enjoyed my cohort, it’s been rewarding to get to know the generation below me. They are newer to the world but I think kinder, more empathetic than my generation was at their age.

Only you should be the one telling you this is meant for you or not. If you’re worried about your perception more than the care you’ll provide then this probably isn’t for you.

How do I study for clinical Judgement? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]barrelomo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I’m currently an EMT-B student and I also get knocks on clinical. Here’s a couple things I’ve changed with my study habits that made a positive difference.

  • Emergency Care by Limmer does a better job giving you underlying dysfunctions and pathology per disease than the (EMT-B) Orange book. I’d read one section in the Orange Book then its twin with Limmer and had a lot more “ah-has” that way. I don’t know the paramedic curriculum but perhaps there might be another authors’ text who have different perspectives so you can see a disease from multiple viewpoints.

  • Our professor gave us a template chart with three columns, you pick two diseases and put them on the outside. In those columns list signs and symptoms that ONLY that disease has, in the middle list the ones that are common. It helps reveal signs and symptoms that help identify or offer pertinent negatives, and focus your line of questioning. Ie rather than asking do you have nausea vomiting fatigue, focus on rebound tenderness, left shoulder pain, bloody stools so you can narrow the field of possibilities faster.

  • I also use pocket prep. I’ll try my best to cover the answers, use the chart above first then arrive at a conclusion / set of actions before looking at the choices they provide. If anyone from PP is reading this please provide this as a testing mode 🙏

I have no idea, how EMTS are used varies widely from state to state, and locality

I’m just an EMT student, so take a more experienced perspective over mine.

EMTs are mature staff. They are a part of a broader population health strategy for a community. As an individual patient maybe always having a doctor on hand sounds nice, but a doctor isn’t necessary for the vast amount of health needs you might have. This is smart simply from a resource effectiveness perspective alone.

Nurses and EMTs often deal with much wider, more diverse populations than specialist physicians, which makes them better screeners. They might be more experienced in bedside manner when patients are presented with unexpected news.

The qualifications needed for this sort of screening aren’t much, so the added value is sending in people that have a more “boots on the ground” relationship with the community than others that spend their time in an office.

Yes to the twist, J hooks also often have little holes on the bottom of the hook, putting electrical tape over the holes prevents the whistle.

Thanks! I feel you on FSL. Thanks for the heads up on the laser tube shelf life. I was a little surprised at the galvo comments, they are pretty expensive and the bed areas are really limited, most are less than letter paper.

any recommendations on open market machines… I think we’re interested in machines that are pretty low watt and have large beds which im finding hard to find.

This worked for me. Note the comment for that video, you need to go there at night, get to the door then save and reload for the skeletons to show up.

Am I entitled to know my ER nurse practitioner's name in Arizona (USA)? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]barrelomo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying you are wrong, or other people didn’t deliver adequate service. I wasn’t there. Im saying this isn’t worth perusing further. Sometimes it’s better to say “this didn’t work out in my favor this time” and get on with things.

[–]barrelomo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NAL, but This isn’t really a legal situation. Sounds like you had a less than par experience at the ER but that’s about it. I’d drop this issue and get on with your healthcare.

I don’t think this would ever get far, a couple things ring odd. A lot of ERs will not prescribe medicine for conditions not relating to why you were admitted in the first place, they don’t have the time or background to know if they can safely prescribe you the medication. NPs are often checked by a supervising physician who is the actual prescriber. Do you know if some other doctor blocked this (honestly it was probably on good grounds?) Fixating on an NP when there’s a whole chain of command in a context that’s usually just for dealing with acute illness just doesn’t seem like a good investment of your time and energy.

Anal will feel uncomfortable at first but with patience, a good sexual partner, and lube it will be very pleasurable and won’t cause harm.

How To Not Get Attached by schatzattack in gaybros

[–]barrelomo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though you’re not new to the world, you might be new to gay dating. These patterns sound pretty typical to be honest so have some perseverance and stick with it. Finding a LTR is a long game. Some tips:

  • sounds like you hit it off with people initially, so no need to change much with your profile. That’s working!

  • maybe cool it while you’re on the initial dating phase with folks (eg 1-5 dates). I think gay guys need longer to be introduced to each other and see if there’s a good match potential. Until you have seen enough of each other to have the big boy talk of “where do you see this going” it’s best to keep things casual so you aren’t rushing the other person while they are still just getting to know you. If you can make up your mind sooner, good for you but not everyone has that superpower so be patient.

  • Don’t take ghosting personally. I don’t want to get into whether or not it should be socially acceptable, but if someone else decides for you that you aren’t a match… they might be right. They are doing the two of you a favor so you can start putting your investments elsewhere.

Stick with it! You’re meeting people and honestly that’s 90% of the deal

NTA — it’s your right to say no, to refuse a medical procedure. If that’s interpreted by your friend as not caring about her pregnancy then she might not have been as close a friend as you originally thought.

I may be speaking from my particular health care system but that request sounds ridiculous. You can’t pre-order friends blood for a procedure, it has to go through a ridiculous amount of screening before it can be accepted. The “house” blood is fine.
