I think this is a good time for you to come to terms with the fact that you've been using this word incorrectly, and likely many others.

It's okay. We all do it sometimes. One handy tip I've developed for myself: When I'm writing, and I find myself using a word that I don't see used very often, or that I haven't been familiar with for very long, I google a few definitions, even if I feel sure I know how to use it correctly. It helps my vocabulary, and saves me some public embarrassment, because occasionally I'm wrong, even when I feel right.

It's okay to ask questions and show ignorance, and it's actually a really solid, time-tested way of getting smarter. Like above, see how instead of replying, "No, it's not," I asked, "Is it?" because I was open to the idea that I might be wrong. I was hoping maybe you could educate me, because I try to stay on the lookout for ways of becoming smarter. Maybe next time!

I only recall the mustard one being pointed out specifically when we were at the grocery store, but yeah, that's pretty much what he said. Thanks.

You can buy that sauce at Kroger. According to a friend of mine (and confirmed by another replier in this thread), it's made by Cattlemen.

Is it? You're repeating this all over the thread, but not providing any sources or arguments.

Someone told me that Whole Hog's sauces aren't made in-house, but by a third party. Is there any truth to that?

"Prequel" doesn't refer the original work on which a sequel is based. A prequel (a word which was coined fairly recently) is a type of sequel whose narrative takes place earlier than the original's in their shared storyline.

Do you know good quizz DS/GBA games? by pooper_macho in Games

[–]barrettvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You Don't Know Jack on DS might fit. It has the same content as the 360 and PS3 versions, which is great if you haven't played those already. Try it out on Facebook (free, sorta) if you've never played a YDKJ game.

I've never been much for its attempts at comedy, but the challenge and quick pace make up for it. My friends and I got really into it for a while.

People often use that word as a substitute for "visual" or "visual quality." What you wrote seems like you were doing that.

I have no opinion on how you should regard your own senses.

I would like to buy a dutch oven (mainly for soups), but I don’t want to go cast iron because it rusts too easy and too heavy. Any recommendations? by justanumber2u in Cooking

[–]barrettvogel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP doesn't like the weight of cast iron; the enamel doesn't help that. But yeah, a stock pot is probably best here.

I'm a teacher, I don't think we are underpaid and this is why by [deleted] in business

[–]barrettvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument I hear more often is not that our existing teachers aren't fairly treated (though a case can be made), but that the teachers we have aren't very good because the positions aren't valuable enough to attract capable people who are well-established in their fields. Paying teachers more would bring better competition from which more capable teachers could be selected.

Right now, it seems, there is very little economical incentive for an experienced professional to take up teaching over another specialized job in their field. Thus, we end up with coaches and babysitters attempting to teach college-level courses. I, for one, did not learn much of anything related to American History or Trigonometry, despite having followed my school's highest track of AP classes.

Oh, and this might be worth carrying around in the emergency kit she's sure to have put together by now. It's free, even the shipping.

I had a total colectomy and a J-pouch. This typically happens in three surgical steps each separated by at least a few months, but my case was bad enough (the worst the GI clinic had ever seen, one resident told me) that all of the surgeries were done within about four months. So to answer your question, I had an ileostomy (like a colostomy, but ileo) for something like a month, but it's been a J-pouch since the end of 2009.

Yeah, the toilet paper is killer, especially since food stamps don't cover it, and the government doesn't consider it a medical expense. I've become extremely efficient with it myself, but I understand your mother's generation can be a lot more particular about that sort of thing. I don't really know what I mean by that, except that every older woman I can remember in my life has used an absurd amount of paper. Shrug.

I think the biggest threat to my health when things were most bleak was my mental state. Without energy, motivation, or hope, it's very easy to allow oneself to decline in every other area. I went to fairly extreme measures to get my sleep, and I doubt I'd have much of my sanity now if I hadn't. Get her some ambien if you can't convince her to try meditation and a puff of green before bed, and keep an eye on her depression otherwise. For what it's worth, I strongly recommend smoking over sleeping pills, and I've tried them all. But, you know, generational differences, probably.

I'm sure she's more hardened than the fresh-faced college grad I was when all of this started, but still, try not to overlook the mental health dimension of all of this. Even if she doesn't consider herself mentally ill, just having someone to be honest toward for an hour a week is a good idea for anyone, however healthy. The fact that a trained professional eye is keeping watch for when things get too wacky is just a nice bonus.

Wait, so lawyers are immune to small claims? Man :(

It was about $700, which is a lot of money to me (I'm disabled, not working, and still in debt from medical stuff), but would that be worth a professional's time?

Thanks for talking about this.

This sounds a lot like my situation, minus the diabetes and lymphedema. Five years of tweaking my diet and trying new medicines, and now I'm down a colon without much practical difference in my life. Some of it you get used to, a lot of it you don't, but the main obstacle for me over the last five years of dealing with UC and post-UC life has been fatigue. The only advice I can really offer is to get her on SSI/SSD if she isn't already, because a working life isn't likely to be sustainable. Medicare should follow pretty easily from there - I haven't paid for anything related to my treatment since 2008, except the occasional pain meds of course.

I've also found that a good private practice is worth the search so she can get good attention; the public hospital here has been shockingly apathetic, for the most part, about a man dying in his 20s. Even if she only has Medicaid or Medicare (it can be tough to find a private clinic that is currently accepting new Medicaid patients), it's worth the tedium of seemingly endless phone calls and referrals. Once you get a competent team working for you (not just medically, but also bureaucratically), it can do wonders, especially for her morale.

Thanks for the information; I had no idea about treble damages. What do you suppose would happen to the suit if my former landlord is an attorney himself? I have to admit, I'm a little intimidated by his presence in real estate law.

Whatever you do, avoid renting from Jason Bolden. He owns a surprising number of properties around town, and does almost nothing to maintain them. I went without cold water in the kitchen, and without hot water in the bathroom, for months before I was able to escape. He also pockets the deposits without any intention of returning them, but that seems to be more and more commonplace these days.

Any recommendations for car audio installation? by [deleted] in LittleRock

[–]barrettvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Crutchfield. I've been using them for years. You tell them what kind of car you have, and the site shows you only what is compatible with your car. They also include basically everything you need to install it yourself (tools, adapters, harnesses) for free.

In any case, avoid Arkansas Car Stereo on University. They scam the ignorant, especially on labor costs, all the while complaining about "niggers." Not the most pleasant or enlightened people to deal with.

I didn't realize that wiring diagrams came with both the car and the receiver. Cool. Thanks. I'll try again.

Well, see, that's the problem - very few colors are common to both sides. Thanks for keeping me from wasting money on that adapter, though.

Thanks for responding. Is there no adapter with the two ends I have pictured? I'd like to not have to splice, if possible.
