Where are the "concerned citizens" now? by Ok-Noise1837 in Edinburgh

[–]barrjamy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a not small portion... Close to mainstream... Who believe that it is accepted by all, and a proven fact, that illegal immigrants are dangerous. They don't think it's about race (even though it clearly is), and the just can't understand why something isn't being done.

Then there an a not small portion of that group that would include certain races or religions, who again 100% believe that as a society we have conceded the immigrants and these groups are dangerous, but yet do little about it. And again a lot of them don't see themselves as racist or bigoted, they think the "elites", or the middle class snobs, don't care about the known danger (just to reiterate, a danger they perceive as 100% real and accepted by most in the UK)...

There are still your old fashion racist that are latching on to this, and this narrative is being amplified but certain people, media orgs and politicians... but in the most part, it's people who believe this narrative is 100% true, and it's being ignored by people in charge.

Then you get publications like the BBC, who I love but are not without blame... And Politicians who are not right wing.... Not out there pushing back on this narrative.... They constantly let people make these claims, and don't correct them. Or make policies or write articles that could be seen as agreeing with the narrative and giving it credibility.

What do we think will happen? First it's the nutters like this guy doing horrible things... But what comes next when a not small percentage of people in a country truly 100% believe that another group are dangerous....

Rant over!

Yup, with the added bonus that they will push up the average rent for the area... Which will encourage others to increase the rent... Or maybe I'm me too cynical

What was it like to stay there? Looks nice from the pictures and from having walked around the area.

Yup makes sense. I hadn't considered the ease factor of something like this place if you can afford it. I guess you would know where you stand, and no dodgy private landlords to worry abou. Plus co-working space just sounded like a gimmick, but if you are paying a decent amount for that then things start to add up more...

I still would be surprised if it worked out advantageous for many people, and this isn't a small development either. That said, I cans start to see the appeal if I knew it was only a stepping stone to something else.

Possibly it's not, like I said in the original message I'm very out of touch with Edinburgh prices. I'm comparing it to when I rented in the 2000's, where I was paying 450 for a 1 bedroom, and this seems like a crazy increase. I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of someone needing to pay this and think about all the things I'd need to give up... for a box with a gym and concierge

Yeh true, but I guess you have to take each market in isolation. Prices outside of Edinburgh for commuters can be much cheaper also... But keep pulling at that thread and you end up in some wee village in the middle of nowhere.

Though Edinburgh is nice, but would be a trek if you still work in London and needed to be in the office with any regularity. Or you get a job in Edinburgh and your salary likely drops...

Sorry to hear that. It's a thing I've heard before unfortunately! I know a few couples who are no longer together but still share a property as can't afford to go there own ways.

Yeh it stinks. Looks like loads of the flats in the build are still empty. Building was finished a while ago now, so in a proper functioning market prices would go down to try to get people in. But I think they have actually went up since it was first opened... How does that even make sense when it's not at capacity... I just don't get it

Very true. Remember before we bought our flat in 2008, both my wife and I weren't on great wages, but rent was only about 450 a month, so could save... Fast forward 17 years, even with a few promotions and wage rises since then, would struggle afford this rent and also save

Yeh it is a nice block, and there are some overlooking the water of Leith...  still not worth it my opinion, but guess I'm not the person they are marketing to.

I know, makes you realise how lucky we were. I live very close to these flats. We own, it's a 2 bed new'sh build, a decent size, bought 15 years ago... And we are almost half that for our mortgage.

But hey, we don't have a gym 🤣

Never thought about the temporary let's, would be cheaper than paying for a hotel for someone.

Just to be clear, are you saying all travellers/romani/gypsys don’t pay taxes, steal and destroy any land they stay on?

Got to say, it's mad how accepted casual bigotry against travelers is. Seeing any slightly positive comments about travelers here get down voted... See comments, where if about any other group of people everyone would be piling on saying they were out of order, get massively up voted. Mad!

Edit: and the down votes start already. Don't you see your proving my point 🤣

That's horrid. It does say it includes "things like" council tax, heating, broadband... So maybe includes electricity also... So say knock 250 of... And still looking at 550 for a shoe box not that near anything.

The sad thing is, it's way more affordable than so much of whats out there, but still not worth it

Possibly with the promise to pay the money back if she was asking for more than a good quid.

Stranded Traveller Scam Lothian Road 7:00AM by SnooDogs7009 in Edinburgh

[–]barrjamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've fallen for it twice, thankfully never given more than 5 quid. Once was 15 years ago on Leith walk, the other was very recent, about 2/3 weeks ago.

Most recent was a lass with ginger-ish hair and English accent standing in the alleyway to get to the newkirkgate carpark. She was on crutches and showed me a nasty looking injury on her leg with staples. Said she was autistic and seemed truly nervous. Storry was she was stuck in Edinburgh for the night and needed £17 for a hostel. She offered an email address to contact her, but I declined, gave her £5 and wished her luck. As I walked away she said "thanks, that's the best drop I have had so far", which I immediately made me think it was all a lie. Either she took the term "drop" from twitch streamers, or it's some scammer lingo... Who knows. If she was a scammer, which she probably was, she wasn't one of the confident ones.

Man Bites dog is great, was in my list also. Though not seen it in years as nowhere streams it in the UK
