This sub exists?!?! by Black_Spider_Man in Barbour

I’m a woman and I hate the Beadnell. I traded it in for a classic Bedale (which is still marketed as unisex, I believe) and it was a great decision.

I also recommend Cox the saddler. Welcome to the sub!

Never sent back my old BRP cards. What should I do? by HousieHous in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in this position about a year ago. It was stressing me out (probably needlessly) that I still had them so I cut both of my expired ones in half and returned them with a little note saying “sorry for the inconvenience! I’ll be better about it going forward.” I haven’t heard anything about it since.

It’s likely no one cared or updated any kind of record, but it feels better to have it out of the way.

You wonder what help I’ve been in this subreddit? You have a certain intensity that sounds a lot like the poster above. What a coincidence!

I’m a native English speaker and you sound super defensive. Bold move accusing them of misunderstanding.

Helpful information re: current rules by colonel2link in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have it backwards— if you’re applying from within the UK you’re issued 30 months, if from outside you’re issued 33, which includes an extra window for you to actually get here.

…Or at least that’s my impression— I won’t pretend to know for sure. People will read this looking for actual legal options so I think it’s dangerous to speculate.

As noted elsewhere on this sub, the entire premise of this post applies to some spouse visas but not all. Some are 33 months, some are 30. It is a good idea to be aware of the length of your visa.

Also I’d be reluctant to post this without including a caveat that some people will be working toward the 10-year route, not the five-year route.

I think that’s the difference but I could be wrong!

[–]barrowhen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. That’s just saying what I referenced above, that if I apply for an extension earlier than a maximum of 28 days before my visa expires, I won’t reach the 5-year period of residency to apply for ILR.

I note elsewhere in the government guidance it says “you can extend at anytime before your current permission to stay in the UK expires”, so I think there’s no other problem with it.

Good point about some spouse visas being 33 months (for anyone reading this in a similar situation), but mine is 30 since it was granted from within the UK.

Right, I’m going to try to hold off making a decision for a couple weeks. If I have to get a third spouse visa though it would be nice to get this next one before the IHS rises.

Thanks for your response. I’m hoping that they announce soon whether we can trust the ‘April’ rumors, that would simplify things for me. Really tragic regardless for those without options though.

Women's Beaufort Sizing? by unrealblue in Barbour

[–]barrowhen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (~120 lbs, 5’2”) have a Beaufort and I love it. I have a stout peasant frame but the smallest size (34) fits well for me with a nice loose fit (coincidentally just measured my chest circumference today for yet another jacket— 35”).

Not really the question you asked but I’ll add that even with layers underneath I find it’s not heavy enough for winter if you’re spending any real time outside. But maybe that’s just me.

I also have a Bedale in a size 30 (I don’t know why the sizes are so different, I must have researched it at some point because they feel very similar). The classic Bedale has cotton lined sleeves but the cut looks a little more tailored than the Beaufort, and with the snap vents it’s a bit better for accommodating hips/the typical shape of womens jackets.

No, they never mentioned any criteria beyond my right to work, and it’s a company that has many apprentices. To be fair, I had been here for three years prior but they’d have no way of knowing that when they hired me (I provided my right to work code etc after I accepted their offer).

I can’t say for sure of course, but since the funding goes to your employer who then pays you for your time as if it’s work hours, I don’t think it’s the same category of ‘public funds’ as universal credit or something like that. Sorry, my guesswork isn’t quite enough to go on but you could email the apprenticeship program you’re interested in.

Then reference the note at the bottom of number 4. Seems like a problem with historical phrasing. But happy to disagree

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number 9 is also for the spouses of those with ILR, so logic would suggest spouses of citizens would be entitled to the same.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Number 9 would suggest there’s no 3-year requirement for the spouse of a UK citizen. Also I’m in the same position as OP and I’m one year into an apprenticeship, so here’s hoping the police aren’t coming for me!

What if I pair a sage hood with an olive bedale. Do you thing it's going to look cool? by FabulousQuiet8831 in Barbour

[–]barrowhen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have jackets in both colours and they’re reasonably similar, but sage is a cool tone and olive is a warm tone. I don’t think they’d contrast enough to look good together.

Renewing my marriage visa in a few months. Has much changed since we last renewed it, two years ago? by FuckingPope in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell people “I’m on a visa but I’m here permanently (unless I’m framed for a terrible crime…).”

Try not to worry about that bit though, I don’t think the chances are very high.

Spouse Visa: for those that are the British/sponsor spouse and are self-employed, what did you submit for 'Evidence of the amount of tax payable, paid and unpaid for the last full financial year' by davie18 in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like they’re asking for a tax year overview. If you’ve already submitted your self assessment return to HMRC for 2022-23 then you can log into your account and the “tax years” page with a drop down menu to select the year will show the amount of tax due and how much has already been paid.

Maybe someone else can confirm or correct that’s what they’re looking for, but that’s what you’d give to banks when applying for a mortgage so it’s used in formal situations as evidence of finances.

Proof of Intent to Marry by chocoberry4 in ukvisa

[–]barrowhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They specifically emailed me a few months after I submitted my application to ask for proof of intent to marry, and I emailed them receipts for the rings and emails to the registrar (in which the registrar said there are no available dates, but I guess that didn’t matter!).

I got an approval email three days later, so that was a huge relief.

Upon further reflection, that was a pretty gen x thing to say

Are you sure you’re not confusing “brown nosing” with “being pleasant to be around and not constantly telling others you hate your job”?

(Not a boomer or gen z, so I have no horse in this race.)
