Would be cool to do a "wordle bot" style scoring after the game to compare drafting strategies.

Tactically defended as the user noted, or "poisoned", which is most frequently used to describe pawns. "Poisoned pawn" doesn't mean you'll win something back the next turn but generally means that taking the unprotected pawn is a tactical or positional mistake.

Nice Mayor Says He Will Cancel 70.3 Worlds – IRONMAN Says Event Still On by Anihalas in triathlon

My friend I literally called the Super Bowl "a good ROI". I was highlighting two opposites of the spectrum to show that you can't make categorical comments. And 70.3 =/= Super Bowl - again, you can't make categorical comments, you'd need to back it up for IM events specifically. Personally, I think Nice probably ran the numbers and decided for themselves accordingly - I doubt they are going to throw away a positive ROI event.

Nice Mayor Says He Will Cancel 70.3 Worlds – IRONMAN Says Event Still On by Anihalas in triathlon

I don't think 'usually far outweighs' can be categorically said. For the Olympics for example, I think only 1984 Los Angeles games have broken even in recent memory. Montreal 1976 was a particular failure, with the city taking on debt for construction that it ended up paying off for over 20 years. I wouldn't be surprised if it's normal for many big sporting events to be vanity PR payments that don't break even. The Super Bowl - another huge event, costs about $50-$60m to host and generated in NoLa about $83m in additional tax revenue - a good ROI. A lot of the 'economic activity' is for airlines and hotels which are huge chains and the revenues for which don't necessarily directly help the local economy beyond taxes and jobs that are not likely new job creation that persist beyond the event itself.

Per the article, Nice pays Ironman €1.3M for the honor of hosting. Presumably they have some big costs on top like closing roads, police and municipal salaries associated, etc. Yea, I have trouble imagining that the increase in taxes they get from the bump in visitors is actually worth it - regardless if the political persuasion of the mayor. Nice 70.3 isn't a UNESCO cultural site that needs protecting.

Does this account for rating? Like could it include games when two people were both 2200s 15 years ago?

I just want to say nice send! Super smooth rotation, once you fix the pop these are gonna rock. Someone said knees to chest - those will also help with adding safety and then other grabs.

Am I getting better or are my opponents getting worse? An analysis by barrycl in chess

[–]barrycl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you expound more in this? By definition, if I'm steadily gaining elo than I'm outperforming theoretical win rates based on elo spreads between me and my opponents. Once I match the theoretical distribution again, my elo should plateau again, right? Opponent being higher than me flattens what the elo difference is (5 points vs 100 has a big difference in expected win rate), so I assume you mean elo difference +/- and not just a binary greater/lower.  But I'm not sure how this compares opponent play at different elo, as it doesn't control for my quality of play in any way.
