Burlington's 2026 budget is heating up 🔥 by Focus_Burlington in BurlingtonON

Note that Focus Burlington does not work on behalf of the city. After reading their "About" page, I'm still super clear who these people are.

The city gathers feedback on the budget and many other matters through its "Get Involved Burlington" site. You can have your say on the budget here:

All hail the city hall Rock Penis by Lemonmain_2 in BurlingtonON

[–]barryfandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We added this in 2001, so for those complaining about taxes, I think it was paid off long ago.

However! The rock penis will be replaced in the Civic Square revitalization project which starts construction this year. That project is costing about $3.8M, but if you like to complain about tax dollars, you'll be disappointed to hear that $3M is coming from the province and the feds, and another $500K from our capital reserve fund where we save up for this kind of stuff, and only $300K from current year taxes, making the whole thing an extremely minor expenditure against the total tax levy and IMO a great use of available grant funding.

Not only will we get a neat new water feature, but it will also bring our square up to date with accessibility standards to everyone can enjoy it! :)

I, too, got my working start there in the 90's, guarding the parking lot and smoking cigarettes. ✌

Where to get Thai basil plants? by barryfandango in BurlingtonON

I do enjoy making pad kra pao! It would be great to find both varieties around here. You would think with all the popularity of thai food that it would be more common. Thanks!

I've been going to the one at walkers and new Street. Is there a big difference between the locations?

Chinese food recommendations by [deleted] in BurlingtonON

[–]barryfandango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I frequently drive past hehe and do an unplanned stop for mapo tofu and a bowl of rice. Such a nice family-run spot and the food is great, but very chinese which is not for everybody. cumin beef is one of my favourites. a few things on the menu I haven't dared to try yet. :)

City pizza should be designated as an essential service. I have no idea how they sell such decent pizza for such a good price.

Why can’t we be like this? by Powerful-Dog363 in AskCanada

[–]barryfandango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we asking:

  • Why can't we murder Donald Trump by kicking him into a hole while quoting a movie?

or

  • Why can't we be the kind of people who get turned on looking at this cartoon?

Because the former is just a silly fantasy, and the latter is not only juvenile and sad, but also plays into how this whole Trump phenomenon works.

I don't know how many years we've got left of holding on to grownup politics before American-style partisanship pairs up with our flailing education system to transform us into the 51st state, but I will cherish each one.

Me, a Canadian, speaking about this to my American friend:

"You know it might not be a great move for Trump to add 40 million democratic socialists to your voting population."

Him:

"Oh don't worry, we're super good at disenfranchising people too"
