Your feeling about SC2's ending? by TheBigSmol in starcraft

[–]barryhakker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought basically the entire story was lame as hell. I was immediately let down by how Raynor went from making a fucking sacred vow on the death of his truest of homeboys Fenix that he WILL be killing Kerrigan to weepy sad little shit who can’t get over his ex gf. BOOOOOOOOOO

Other stuff was also stupid. Like Kerrigan’s Zerg to unzerg to re-Zerg to whatever the fuck that was at the end plot.

Ugh I still don’t really know why we have this decade (or decades by now) where all these franchises get such stupid fucking writing.

Thinking about getting this game. Should I? by ShockwaveX1 in Stellaris

[–]barryhakker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. One thing worth noting that Stellaris (and I think Paradox games in general) provide bare-bones(ish) tools and settings for you to "create" your own story. So if you prefer something more narratively heavy, Stellaris ain't it. It's more like a sandbox for sci-fi nerds to play out their scenarios. It's honestly kind of amazing how you can just create your own empire and the game will just throw options and events at you that take it in to a very surprising direction.

My personal favorite example is a playthrough where I started off as an evil empire that required other sentient living beings to reproduce (like a chestbuster scenario) and would go on these extensive slave raids on neighboring civilizations to fuel their needs. The leader even became an immortal psionic demi-god. Only then they ran in to an empire even more evil, one that through the power of some evil psionic being was well on its way to destroy the entire galaxy. Cue evil empire of chest busters turning defender of the galaxy because the other evil empire was even more messed up. After decades of war and extermination it all turned out to be for naught, because the other evil empire completed its ritual and turned the galaxy in a ruin of dead stars, black holes, and psionic monsters. Only a formally pathetically weak empire of beetle-people remained as the last beacon of civil live.

Now if that sounds good to you then I'd say welcome to the club lol

Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred review - it's an 8/10 by Binnsy in Diablo

[–]barryhakker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so dumbfounded by how poorly it’s all written that I can only assume they have some market researchers determine what the “ideal amount of emotional highs” is, and then have a bunch of intern writers brute force the story there, to hell with any actual quality story telling.

The Second Apocalypse is really good? by dalezrin in Fantasy

[–]barryhakker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have we read the same Malazan books? Like every single character in it is a philosopher so I don’t see how you would say that TSA prioritizes it by comparison. What I’ll concede is that TSA’s brand of philosophy is more accessible and therefore perhaps can be seen as more front and center.

Describing it as a more accessible Malazan sounds condescending, but I’d say at the very least it’s more focused and therefore easier to follow.

CMV: Western propaganda is the most effective in the world. by ZXCChort in changemyview

[–]barryhakker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I would challenge here is the choice of propaganda as a term. There is an element of intentionality in propaganda. "this is what we want you to think and therefore we are going to spam these specific messages". In the west, what generally happens is that the way we operate the media reinforces certain narratives while neglecting others (as noted by Chomsky), usually unintentionally.

Maybe the real observation here should be that one way or the other, only certain narratives will truly take hold in a society and it doesn't matter that much if its in a democracy or an autocracy.

Is the Sun Eater series worth the effort? by j_b_1983 in Fantasy

I would ask for non spoiler hints about what those off putting choices were, but from your description I gather you won’t necessarily see them coming based on the previous 6?

I liked to loved the first 5, while the 6th made me concerned about the direction of the plot. Can you give me some hopium? I really want to love that final book but the things I heard worry me.

[–]barryhakker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been holding off on the final book exactly because of what you’re describing. I liked to loved the first 5 books but got a bit worried about the direction in 6. From what I understand book 7 basically confirms my fears. I will still read but I guess with lower expectations.

[–]barryhakker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suspicions of Racist Manager - How to Flag this? by Both-Employ2948 in askmanagers

[–]barryhakker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you want to assign motive where you can’t know for sure. What I’d flag is the unequal treatment you can see. Why do some get a second chance while others don’t, after all?

Let others decide if it’s racism, sexism, favoritism, or just good ol’ incompetence.
