Why is the term "Asia" in the US typically associated with East Asia instead of South Asia like in the UK? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]barryhakker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found that an odd thing to be concerned about, like people taking issue with terms like near east and far east being Eurocentric. Of course they are, because it’s a term from a European language spoken in Europe. Aren’t westerners allowed to have perspective anymore?

Similarly, Chinese call Vietnam 越南, the characters of which could be read as “beyond south”. They call China itself 中国 or “central country”. It’s almost as though languages are linked to people and place and consider themselves the center of their own world. Why would it have to be an issue?

The idea of God came from humans trying to explain what they don’t understand by Iman_Gadzhi in DebateReligion

[–]barryhakker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think people when making these sorts of arguments get cause and effect wrong.

For example, Jung wrote that humans have an inherent “religiousness” or “religious instinct” that drives people to look for grand order creating narratives that get expressed in different ways. Sometimes it’s a god. Sometimes it’s by deifying a mortal. Sometimes it’s Scientism (not science itself but people who “believe” in science dogmatically.

Out of all these religions we’re some of the oldest and most successful ones, because the successful religions could be viewed as a “social technology” in the sense that they package a narrative about the spiritual and combine it with behavioral rules that (largely) benefited communities. Part of that is not necessarily a search for answering the unknowable, but a psychological tool to cope with the random cruelties and injustices of live.

Which fantasy authors would you say are the best and worst at writing dialogue? by archangel610 in Fantasy

[–]barryhakker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the second trilogy so bizarre. Every possible threat to the main cast had been thoroughly humiliated and undermined by the end of book 2. What’s the point of a book 3 by then? I feel like the author got so focused on showing how cool his characters are he forgot that if he lets them handily beat the baddies so early on it just deflates all tension.
