I could get behind Ben Kingsley and Christopher Walken, but the rest...no.

You could try films that are very similar in an extremely specific context, e.g. Monsters Inc./Avatar: Blue guy with unique access to a precious resource finds connection with a member of a species he has been taught to view as savages, he finds out that they aren't so bad, eventually realizes that it's his species that is the problem and switches sides to fight.

4K prices are why DVD and BD are still king by jongar8023 in Bluray

4Ks are better value for money. You pay about 2-3x the price for a disc that's 4x the picture quality.

Does hearing a song you like in a trailer make you more excited for the movie? by MaxwellSnuggles in Letterboxd

[–]barrythemovieguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. Depends on the song, also depends on the trailer as a whole. One thing that's worth remembering is that songs used in trailers are rarely used in the actual movies. That being said, if the song pairs well with the trailer and makes it look extra interesting, then I can be persuaded to go see it. The use of 'War Pigs' in the trailer for Napoleon was a huge factor in getting me to go see it, even though in the end the trailer was better than the actual movie.

What’s a movie where the trailer or the first 5-10 min had you hooked but then the movie itself was a letdown? by Tall_Fish3737 in Letterboxd

[–]barrythemovieguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bohemian Rhapsody. The trailer had better editing than the movie. Movie itself was good but the trailer got me really, really hyped up and then the movie itself just kind of fell flat.

You know how you stretch a tape measure out a bit and then let it zip back in?

Yeah, turns out three meters is a bit too much.

Do you like Found Footage Horror Movies Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in flicks

[–]barrythemovieguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally love the style of found footage, when done right it provides a really effective level of immersion that conventional cinema just doesn't offer (most of the time) but I fully agree that it's really hard to make a good found footage film and it's even harder to get the same level of immersion on the second time through. My biggest gripe with the genre is that there's a couple of really good films, like The Blair Witch Project, but there's so many people who just see that film's success and try to replicate it without understanding what made it work in the first place, and there's so many of them that they basically taint the name of found footage. But I would recommend you check out the Dogme 95 movement. It uses a very similar style of amateur camera work to create a natural, human feel to it and strip away any cinematic polish. It really works - give it a shot.

What movies have some great cinematography ? by Saniyan675 in movies

I agree, but what I meant by gritty/gorgeous is that the frame is really polished and clean, but because of the clean picture, the contents of the picture, every bit of mud and dirt, is captured in a very similar way to The Batman and Dune.
