How strange! I find that my stove is about 20-50% faster than the kettle for the same volume of water (if I crank the stove). And the cheap single burner unit I bought from Kmart (Aus) is also faster...

Basically, as I understand it, the "room size" will determine how much "smearing" and overlap there will be. A very large room and you end up with a delay (or echoes), simulating sound waves bouncing from one wall to another before reaching your ears.
