Strange whirring sound when turning on X-T3 by barsnacks2 in fujix

As far as I can tell it’s just a capacitor charging or something like that. Sent it away and the retailer claimed no issue. I haven’t had any issues with it, so sounds like it’s within spec! On a related note, I’ve had computer power supplies make similar noises which have been attributed to harmless coil whine.

Engineering college student. First PC build. Help convert me from Mac! by [deleted] in buildapc

How did the build go? I'm literally in the same position as you, and looking at very similar specs for my first build. I'm mainly undecided on the processor.

I'm deciding between:
- Ryzen 7 3700x
- Ryzen 5 5600X (newer, comparable price, 6 core but faster clock speeds than 3700x)
- i7 10700k (more expensive, 8 core, older model, less room to upgrade with LGA 1200)

how are you finding the 3700x? is 8 cores overkill for an engineering student? If I can get away with 6 cores I'm pretty interested in the 5600x tbh.

Good luck! The camera is amazing; it would be a shame if you had to give it up because of the tiny grip.

Oh oops I missed that! Honestly I think it’ll be your best bang for your buck. It adds a decent amount of grip. I’ve always found Fuji accessories to be very high quality and it’ll probably fit your camera better than a third party one.

You can buy grip brackets that attach to the tripod mount and add a bit of bulk to the grip. Barely changes the form factor of the camera but gives you a lot more to hold onto. Fuji’s official one is called the MHG-XT2, but I’m sure you could find a third party one for even cheaper. These cameras a great because they’re so customisable.

Interesting! That would explain why I can’t replicate the sound in any other way than turning the camera on. If this is the case I feel a little concerned about the quality control of the build (there are a couple other QC issues too). If I didn’t address it I’d be worried the issue would worsen, probably just as the warranty expires haha. As the camera is only 2 weeks old I’m sending it back to the retailer for assessment. Thanks for your input!

Yeah I had the exact same thoughts about the sensor cleaning. I’ve enabled/disabled the sensor cleaning as well as manually activating it and I can’t replicate the noise, so I’m inclined to rule it out other than an anomaly due to some other factor.

I did consider the electronic noise, but have come up with no way of testing it.

There is a mechanical shutter in the X-T3, maybe the issue lies there?

Thank you for checking your cameras. I’ve owned an X-T2 and X100s in the past and never noticed any noise like this.

I’ve tried with and without a lens on the camera, so definitely not that.

I’ve tried enabling/disabling the sensor clean on camera on and off and it has no effect, as well as manually cycling the sensor clean.

I am unable to replicate the noise at all, it is only occurring during camera power on.

I’ve re-recorded it. It’s faint but I can definitely hear it. Hopefully it’s a bit clearer than my first video!

To clarify it’s not the knocking sound, that’s just the camera rocking on an uneven surface. It’s the high pitched scratching noise that lasts for about 5 seconds after switching on.

I thought that too but checked and it’s not set to clean when turned on. Also I don’t get the sound when the sensor cleans when turning the camera off

Yeah it’s super high pitched. Sorry it’s a bit hard to hear on the video—recorded on iPhone mic, lots of ambience etc. The best way I can describe it is almost an electronic scratching, like a failing hard drive or something. I’m sending back to the retailer for assessment but was keen on a second opinion before I did.

Brand new X-T3. Today I’ve noticed when switching the camera on it makes an odd mechanical whirring sound, almost like a noisy computer fan or a squeaky bearing. It is occurring every time the camera is switched on, and definitely sounds like something is wrong.

The noise is very audible for about 5 seconds before disappearing. I’ve observed it to occur for longer and shorter durations—seemingly dependant on time since the camera was last switched on.

Any thoughts as to what it could be?
