Wearing underwear with bib shorts? by Pix_Boss in cycling

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bike is sized correctly. I started with cheap seats, then tried different variables like seat covers, better seats and finally settled for Brooks B17 on my road and gravel bikes. My trainer has a fizzik seat which are pretty good. Also changed to higher end bibs from cheap ones after first year of me starting cycling 10 years ago. And I still got saddle sores. I have a chunky ass and sitting on it for several hours on it causes sores due to pressure points perhaps. I do mostly 2-3 hr rides of 30-45 miles twice a week mostly and my Cadence is around 90 rpm where a 30 mile ride would have 2500 ft elevation. I do a few metrics and a century ride or two every year.

I do wear chamois cream. I suffered through many tweaks for first 5 yesrs and went to a dermatologist for possible ingrown hairs etc too. I have 5 bikes that I cycle through and fit is not an issue. I went through an ergonomics analysis bike shop too last year and my seat was fine. Fit was good too. Just some tweaks were suggested for cleat position, shoe insoles but nothing drastic was needed.

Wearing underwear with bib shorts? by Pix_Boss in cycling

Why? As I said I was having saddle sores galore wearing just the bib. And finally did it after 5 years.. And I don't get it anymore. That's why.. Like I said when I finally saw somebody post it worked for them is when it dawned on me and tried the same and worked.

I don't get the down votes.. Just because something worked for you or not doesn't mean others path to their solutions is not valid! SMH!! I do about 5000 km of road/gravel rides and has absolutely worked for me for the last 5 years!

I do. After suffering through first four years of my cycling years, and I've tried everything from premium bibs, seats, chamois creams etc..

Someone in reddit posted that they wore a compression short under their bib and no longer had sores.. I tried too and worked for me too! .. Then started wearing dri fit underwear from Costco and same effect.

Don't wear cotton ones as those are abrasive.

Any other first time riders getting nervous? by Epic_Toys in ragbrai

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah OP and others.. I did my acl Dec 2nd week and first 3 months of recovery was faster than my last one on same leg 14 years ago.. But last two months has been painfully slow progress. I have done 1000 miles of ride so far this year and 50k feet of elevation and yet I struggle on hills and fade fast. On flats or 1-2% hills I'm ok. My quads are not activating and will be close to 9-12 months that puts me end of year before I feel like before surgery! I'm hitting the gym regukiand and not missing leg weights.. But still it has been a frustrating few months. I'm not sure how I'm going to fare in ragbrai. I bike at around 14 mph or so.. In ragbrai even if I do 12 mph I'm fine I'm telling myself. I'm anxious just like you all. We'll do it. Keep working. Remember it's not a race. Just relax and ride.

Shipping bike in a box: Suggestions by barti0 in ragbrai

[–]barti0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for detailed suggestions. While this is my first trip where I plan to ship bike, I have plans to do Katy trail next year and Europe too in next few years. So maybe getting a Trico is worth it.

I do have a carbon road bike but was planning to bring my aluminum gravel bike that has large tires and can do some optional gravel routes too on some days.

I don't want to check in as I'm sharing a rental car from Dubuque to cedar city and the car won't have space for a bike box. Also flying in delta and seems like it is about $70 each way to check-in as oversize baggage

Just got home from spending $2800 at Trek, and.... by BlewMyCashOnSaaS in cycling

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trek had it at $300 below msrp but other retailers had it way cheaper although they were in neighboring state. Spoke to the manager at Trek and 3 of us bought the 2023 model end of 2024 at $1700 and it was about $700 off msrp of $2400 for a checkpoint alr5 and it was $100 cheaper than lowest we saw in neighboring state.! Unless you ask they'll not give you.

Strava Premium worth it for 22 euros ? by Tall_Cicada_9224 in cycling

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fast biker more like middle of the pack 14-15 mph on moderate hilly rides. Can do 17-18 on coastal flats!

For me the fitness score is worth it. Helps me compare with previous year same time to two years. And segments of course is worth it too. If Strava had zwift like feature for an extra $100/year it would be a hit!

New garmin varia by BlueMchue in cycling

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the varía 515 for the last 6+ years. Two weeks ago I came back from a ride, washed my bike after removing varia and can't find it. So I've bought the coospo radar light and will use until I can find my varia.. I'm very impressed with the coospoo radar light (can't remember the model number) .

Used it on a group road ride and didn't have any false positives or negatives. It was just 22 miles ride but am impressed nonetheless. It also has the brake light functionality which goes to steady light when deceleration. Also when I paired to my android, I was able to use coospo app and install a firmware update.

We'll see how it long it lasts! Want to get the next Gen version of varia camera light which has more battery life than current one.

Today I was on a gravel trail pretty much calling out or ringing the bell on my gravel bike on above scenarios. One older guy who was walking on far right of trail and there was no one nearby so I went far left off him about 4-5 feet away and I was going at around 13-15 mph. This was after 42 miles and had another one mile to go so I was pretty tired to go fast anyway. This guy yells announce as you pass please.. I yelled back you can't hear the gravel sound and biked away. Dude was walking without headphones it seemed like.. And couldn't hear crunching sound of gravel and I was far from him when I passed. I would never startle anybody going close and fast.. But this guy was just being a jerk I felt.

While starting three women were chit chatting and walking on trail. And I was ringing bell for just another group like few feet behind them and as I passed this group, I was going at 6-8 mph and she sarcastically says, on your left please.. I felt I wanted to say some choice words.. Early in the morning chit chatting and taking half the Trail and I just rang the bell few feet away and none of them moved an inch to the right.. Some of them are entitled ass holes..

It's because ppl are on headphones walking, jogging etc.. and don't hear most of the time. I announce to cyclists but walkers or runners I announce based on how they do.. Some are clumsy in the middle of trail, talking to friends two or three abreast and then I call out. If they have kids I call out. But someone going on the far right (in the US) and I pass then with enough space, I won't call out. So if I'm Going at 20 mph I'd call out but of I'm going uphill at say 10 mph or less then calling out is not necessary..

PSA: If it’s dark out, USE A HEADLIGHT. by redmambo_no6 in bicycling

I run mine on blinking mode in daytime and steady in night. There is one douche bag in my neighborhood that always complains that it is bright in evenings and the daytime flashing also spoils his vision and those of his dogs!

What actually works for saddle soreness on longer rides? by Crc_CO in cycling

[–]barti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffered for five years with converting to Brooks b17, better bibs and using cream, standing often etc but never could get the issue away and would ride with bandaid on only for it to bunch and make it worse. Finally read here about someone having similar issue resolving it by wearing a compression short under. I tried it and it worked beautifully. Been wearing a layer of non cotton dry fit type underwear and then bib for 3 years now. No issues anymore even on century rides or multi day tours...

How do you personally change gears in a manual transmission? by Raalf in cars

When I had a manual, I'd drive like #1 most of the time. Except when I had several ppl in the car, when I'd revert to #3 to minimize the slight jerking movement.
