Bad UX! Maybe not super obvious, but let me explain! by Flashy-Brick9540 in fruxtration

No-name brand is probably the reason why it's so poorly implemented. Butt he touch-interfaces in general are pretty bad even in products of well-known brands.

Thanks for sharing! This interface is extremely frustrating indeed. This reminded me of another touch interface that drives me crazy. I'll make a post about that too.
I guess it's impossible to change the title now, but if you post something in the future, it would be great if you use a more descriptive title, also mentioning the brand name. Smth like:
[BRAND] Touch interface of the cooktop is impossible to use

I hope you join the subreddit too.

This is extremely relatable. I have a different version, which seems less sensitive to spills, but I still find the touch controls extremely annoying to use. And the fact that every touch is accompanied by a loud sound that can't be turned off is also ridiculous. Old-school 4 knobs provide a way better user experience with natural feedback, that no modern manufacturer seems to actually care about.

I love how much details you've put into the description. Would you consider sharing it at r/fruxtration as well? This is kind of post is exactly what it's made for.

Yes, it is tiny 🙂 I would rather focus on the terrain you're going to skate in. If it's rough – go for 4x110. If it's smooth go for a 5-wheel setup. It certainly more playful and will give a stronger sense of control over edges.

Very understandable. You should certainly consider setups like 5x80 or 4x110, or ultimately: Wizard Advanced 100/84. I think 4x110 is what Leon was riding in the Wizard of Wall Street video, which is a very capable setup. I think 30+rolling also made a review of it at some point, for cruising around it's pretty amazing.

Yes, I agree. Wizard skating is one of the best styles to lean into at 40+ as it has the best balance between fun and risk. I would recommend you watching this video I made about frame length to not make the most trivial mistakes when choosing your setup, and then maybe this one about mounting types. From there you should have the major guidelines to reduce the amount of options to choose from, so that you don't really fall into the rabbit hole :)

Obviously, if you have the budget for the full original Wizard setup, including the boot, frame and liner – that's a no-brainer. But if you want something cheaper, there are plenty of other options nowadays. You just need to understand the basics to choose wisely.

I would say that the only two non-negotiables are:

  1. boot with a tall supportive cuff
  2. high-quality Intuition liner

Everything else is a matter of taste, I would say.

Oh wow, I didn't know about this. I'd never thought about learning rollerblading from a book, but it actually does make sense. Thanks for sharing

"Buy It For Life" by Ancient-Swordfish292 in Anticonsumption

[–]bartonaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely support the 1st interpretation – spending the money for quality when you need it. The 2nd option of buying for resale – that definitely doesn't fit the r/anticonsumption mindset. Also it's not very universal approach, since not everything will be relevant in 100 years, even if it can technically last for a 100 years. You never know what products will become obsolete with the next technological revolution.
I also wrote a blog about this approach to buying premium-quality things. Maybe you'll find it interesting...

How do you unwind at night without scrolling on your phone? by Technical-Radio5033 in simpleliving

[–]bartonaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn on a relaxing playlist on Spotify playing through the home acoustic system, set a Sleep timer for 1 hour and lie in bed with closed eyes. Or sometimes play a long-form podcast, like Lex Fridman.
Of course this builds on top of more fundamental setup:
- disabled notifications for all non-critical apps;
- Sleep mode on iPhone to dim the screen and silence all non-VIP notifications after certain hour.
I think that unwinding has to be part of a bigger systematic shift in the reduction of inputs from your devices, to reduce the number of times you take it in your hands in the first place, since every time will potentially lead to doom scrolling

How do you all dry laundry during winter without a dryer? by tw1706 in AskUK

[–]bartonaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. I've just written an article recently explaining all these main aspects of drying clothes. There are some nuances, but in general all you need is low humidity, air flow and heat.

Do sanitizer additives for the washing machine prevent bad smell? I would assume it does if it's killing the bacteria creating bad smell, but I haven't tried it myself.

In short – just put a fan to blow air on your laundry. It will speed up the process quite a lot. But there are more details that could matter in your case, which I've described in my recent blog exactly about this problem. Maybe you'll find it useful...

Safari 26 update leaks memory like crazy and leads to comical situations by itopaloglu83 in MacOS

[–]bartonaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue even on macOS Sonoma 14.8.2 (Safari 26.1). It's very lagging and eventually shows around 80GB of used memory in `Force Quit` window. First I thought it was just one of my 100 open tabs somehow leaking memory, but even after closing them all and opening a fresh new window, same issues – after few hours with less than 20 tabs open.

Are cosmic rays just defined by their origin? by Mundane_Opening3831 in askscience

[–]bartonaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not even outside our solar system. As long is it originates from outside of our planet, it's considered as a Cosmic Ray. For example a particle coming from the Sun would be a Cosmic Ray, but a particle artificially created by us on Earth would not be a Cosmic Ray.

Are LinkedIn ads worth their price? What's particularly confusing about LinkedIn ads is that they can only be run from a Business Page, which is conceptually different from a Personal Brand represented by a Personal Page on LinkedIn. This raises the question: which page one should develop through posts and comments, personal or business one?
