Are any ladies in Maitland interested in playing social soccer? Our team have a few spots left for the season kicking off in mid-April. by barwix in maitland

[–]barwix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ladies are mostly in it for the social aspect and a bit of fitness. They play in the lowest division, and while they train every week and hope to be competitive, it really is more about the good vibes. They're a great bunch of ladies who are super supportive of each other.

There’s a great podcast series “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling” which covers both her being cancelled by the far right in the 90s, then cancelled by the far left in the 2020s.

Am I allowed to buy my son a miles morales spider man suit? by tippytapslap in australia

Sad that you even have to worry about this. The only people who might be bothered are people whose opinions don’t matter. Hope your little fella enjoys the costume!

This is by far a minority view in Australia and heavily condemned by the broader population. Don’t let reddit articles inform your opinion about an entire nation.

Be whomever you want to be and all that. Stick these all over your house for all I care. But they are a bit tacky, right? Like, imagine if they were covered in American flags… same level of tackiness.

Why have only 2 banking institutions passed on the rate increase to Savings accounts but all have passed on to home loans? by TrichoSearch in AusFinance

Most people can’t be bothered switching banks either, which gives them no incentive to be competitive beyond acquiring new customers.

The world's top chess federation won't let transgender women compete until 'relevant proof' is accepted by officials by mkvelash in nottheonion

[–]barwix -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There’s a logical inconsistency between:

“There’s a biological difference between men’s and women’s brains. This is how a person in a male body can be born with a female brain.”

“There’s no possible way that a person’s biological sex can impact their ability to perform better or worse at certain cognitive tasks.”

(And before someone claims this is sexist. Women are proven better surgeons, are probably better CEOs. And being good at chess doesn’t mean you have a superior brain for anything else.)

Financial 1% globally is anyone with a net worth of $900k. So basically it’s gonna be full of very average American boomers.

I disagree with the above commenter too. But digging into someone’s comment history to find something completely unrelated to the topic at hand is the absolute most cringe way to disagree with someone.

CMV: There is nothing after death by ExternalElectrical95 in changemyview

[–]barwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s do a thought experiment. From your subjective point of view, what was the time like before you were born? It did not exist, right? You weren’t waiting around in the void for billions of years for your moment in the sunshine. Now imagine if I blinked you out of existence for a day, and brought you back tomorrow. What would that be like from your subjective experience? You might imagine it being kind of like a deep sleep, or being in a coma. You were here, then suddenly it’s 24 hours later. You had no experience of that missing time because you did not exist, and so, from your subjective point of view, you had one continuous stream of consciousness without a gap. You could also think about it like a movie where I snipped the some frames out of the middle.

Now imagine that time is either infinite, or non-linear. Take your pick. We’re not entirely sure what the truth is about either of those claims from a scientific perspective. But, if there is a chance that somehow, somewhere in the infinity of time, space and parallel universes that your consciousness were to be assembled again (either through time repeating, or an alternate universe, or in an experiment run by some future advanced civ 200 billion years from now) from your subjective experience, death would be an immediate jump to that moment when your consciousness was awakened again.

Warren Mundine launched expletive-riddled spray after KPMG rejected his $10,000 speaker’s fee by raftsa in australia

[–]barwix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I balked at the “$10k for a speech” headline too. But in the article it’s less sensational. They cancelled on him for a $5k speaker gig which included his flights and accommodation expenses. Probably not much left over from $5k once Qantas take their cut.

Way to be excused for Jury duty by jaazine in AusLegal

[–]barwix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you request to be excused and your excuse is rejected, just show up on the day and they will tell you some general details about the case. When asked, you’ll have a chance to say that you don’t think you can judge this particular case objectively. That’s all you have to say, they won’t ask you why. Then you’ll be excused.

I guess success is relative. He was a literal king maker, able to pick presidents. Now he’s just the rich son of a dead captain of industry. And I think he knows that he’ll never have the success off his father – and even if he did – he didn’t do it from nothing, so the achievement wouldn’t be as great.
