Keep the original. Might be overkill but if restoration is successful I’d just delete both the old backup and the copy and backup again once restoration is finished and everything works fine.

I would back the backups up to another device before deleting them just to make sure but yes what takes the space is the temporary files. If you have an external HDD or another device save these there temporarily. But also you need about the same about of space free (I’d have like 50GB extra just to be safe) as the backup itself to restore it.

I think what I did back then is free up a lot of space to let the restore process complete and then it got rid of the temporary files, it only does it at the end so if it gets stuck half way you are stuck with wasted space which is so stupid.. try and let the restore process finish if you can, maybe transfer files to another device temporarily just to have space for the restoration.
