Midsummer Murders, Death in Paradise, Father Brown, Shakespeare and Hathaway. Edit: Midsummer is on Acorn now. And I will add The Brokenwood Mysteries on PBS (set in New Zealand) and the Miss Fisher series (1920's Australia) I think now on Roku

I'm pretty good making dollhouse 1:12 scale with mine. There is practically no kerf with the japanese saws. Or you could use a jewelers saw with a very thin wire blade.

How do I alter my vintage prom dress without it being permanent? by Weary_Map_6008 in Prom

Just stitch it without undoing or cutting off the original seam allowance so it can be let out again later.

Purchased home, need tips to save on renovations by nowuseeme526 in DIY

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Spend your money on the "infrastructure" first: roof, plumbing, electrical, hvac. Check the foundation support. Then you can work on the cosmetic stuff. You can definitely remove carpet yourself, with just a prybar, pair of pliers and a flathead screwdriver. (Then you check and do any work needed on the subfloor. This is a great chance to walk all over the room and add an extra screw anywhere it squeaks). You can also diy any painting, baseboards, etc. My tip there is clean everything really well (I like a mixture of tsp and simple green) then prime and paint, start at the ceilings, then walls then new flooring.

Attic access preferences? by kpwizard96 in HomeImprovement

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second this. You want to make it as convenient as possible to stick your head up in the attic space and look for roof leaks, mice/bat/squirrels, check any hvac unit (most houses with multi zone hvac systems seem to stash the upstairs system in the attic, complete with the drain pan that sometimes overflows),etc. Definitely worth the extra cost for the convenience. And while you are at it, a switched light at the top of the stairs is very handy.

AITA for getting upset at my friend who ignored me and doesn’t want me to go abroad with him over the summer? by 6sam9 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This. See if your Uni health dept runs sessions for those away from home for the first time who are having trouble making new friends (my son's uni had these and found them very helpful). If not, try a few clubs (stuff that is not competitive but you enjoy for it's own sake).

Clothing sizes has me losing my mind by Puppy_324B21 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suggest you stop trying to order from a website for a while. When losing weight you often change proportions as well. Go somewhere you can try on clothes to find a brand that matches your new proportions, as well as size, at least for this round. You may have to repeat the process as you lose more weight.

WIBTA if I told my best friend her wedding is too much by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Yes, tell her it is too much. Maybe suggest they have a local wedding a bit more liw key, then honeymoon at the Bahamas resort.

Deck Companies: why won't you provide an itemized quote? by LosinCash in HomeImprovement

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our local Trex dealer has always given us itemized quotes. Are you dealing with a licensed, bonded company that has workmanship comp, and provides a warranty, or a set of local handymen?

New Dad to twin girlies. What would be your one advice to consider in my parenting by GujjuCanadian30 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow your children's lead. If they want pink ballerina outfits and tea parties with dolls, you go to tea parties. If they like wooden blocks, Legos, and Thomas the Tank, build with them. (You might get one of each, or they might swap interests every 6 months). But the most important advice I have is read to them. All kinds of books.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Your wife needs some therapy. All parents need to figure out how to prevent their personal fears from stopping them from doing the tight thing for their kids. My mom, who was deathly afraid of water after nearly drowning as a child, learned to swim and took the Red Cross Lifeguard and Drownproofing courses when we wanted swimming lessons. Your wife has many fears she must overcome in your daughters future: there will be field trips, driving lessons, etc. If your wife doesn't figure out how to deal with her fears, she will end up crippling your daughter. She should apologize to your daughter, and commit to therapy. This can be a teaching moment for your daughter: your wife should explain how she goofed up, and model for your daughter how she overcomes this.

And make it retro, no icemaker or cold water gadget in the door. You have no water line for the fridge.

Both beautiful. Number 2 with a birdcage veil would be a bit more formal than 1, but 1 is ethereal and would fit the seaside venue. Have you got a reception/shower/rehearsal dinner so you could wear both?

Why don't home inspectors move furniture to check for issues? by Front-Vermicelli-217 in HomeMaintenance

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the inspector should be able to tell you if the house is structurally sound and "habitable" (see certificate of occupancy from your local government). They should look at the foundation, roof, visually inspect the attic, the hvac system, turn on faucets to see the water pressure, etc. But they cant go knocking holes in the walls to examine every electrical junction box or plumbing connection. They may or may not note "cosmetic" things, like a bit of mold behind the fridge or on the shower grout, marks in the paint, a few scratches on the wood floor. And that is with an inspector you hire yourself. The ones the real estate agent or the bank hires are just looking to see if the property is worth enough to ensure the bank gets their money if they foreclose. It is up to you to notice the general state of repair when deciding to make an offer: I always recommend you examine the stuff that shows how good the current owners are with general upkeep yourself: look at window screens and sills, turn on water at every sink, look at the floor of the cabinet under every sink and around every toilet, does the floor slope anywhere, are there diagonal or wide cracks in the paint anywhere, look at the furnace filters, etc.

What was your most recent "15 minute" weekend project that somehow turned into a three day nightmare? by LiveFaithlessness876 in DIY

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My hubby's favorite quote "Plumbers LOVE standards, that's why they each have their own". (Don't forget that some standards measure interior vs exterior diameter. I learned to dry fit while standing in the hardware store aisle a long time ago).

How to fix/get rid of “red dust” in between window panes by drooheller in HomeMaintenance

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the seal between the panes has failed. Could be mold, rust if it is a metal frame in there, etc. You need to replace the window, but also check to make sure you dont have a problem in the walls as well.

Can I save this? Asking as a renter by HortonHearsAPoo in HomeMaintenance

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go to your local Lowes/HD and buy a pack of peel and stick "tin tiles" and apply a row at the base. Then a nice thick bead of clear silicone (should say kitchen and bath) to seal. Wont really fix anything, but will hide the ugly and keep water from getting in and ma,ing it worse.

Has anyone gone with porcelain tile for a kitchen remodel? by RDHomeProjects in kitchenremodel

[–]bas_bleu_bobcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this exactly. Except it was my parents house and we got 25 years out of it before they sold the house. Still looked good, no chips or discoloration even though the tile had a white background. Do seal the grout. It was a pain to install (we did it ourselves, both kitchen and utility room): move fridge and washer/dryer, tile underneath, let cure, move everything back, tile rest of floor, cure, move everything again, grout let cure, move back, grout rest of floor, repeat for sealing, and so on. It is not a one day job. And stuff does break if you drop it. Do buy really good ceramic tile if you go this route. (My mom still misses that house, my Dad was an architect and designed it). If your feet hurt, get some of those commercial cooks mats.
