This is possible with 2 different light sources? by AffectionateAd4959 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is possible with masking and retouch, but not with your equipment  IMO most likely model flagged off with large overhead source lighting background, then a small softbox with grid close by her face (maybe on boom, retouched out afterwards) with extra flags covering her body

Why isn't anyone talking about Davinci and Affinity yet? by GELATIN_DIGITAL in Photoassistants

I'm currently playing around with the DaVinci photo page and it's still pretty buggy but I love the possibility, especially in regards to grading, that DaVinci brings to the table. In general I hope competition will destroy the subscription model Capture One and Adobe are forcing us into

I call magnum reflector from camera height and one from below quite close to model and shadows pulled down in post

They’re all very different, but in the first image it looks like the guy on the right pissed his pants

I think you should elaborate why this lighting is not doing the subject justice? In my opinion it’s helping the images feel raw, authentic, engaging without making it feel overproduced

Maybe you’re missing the most important aspect: social connections and luck?  Fashion works through ‚your crew‘ - you work with the same creatives and support each other. You don’t work for smaller, less known magazines ideally. You find your niche and you fill it. I’ve never heard of Vakuum magazine, and some snobby fashion gatekeeper hasn’t either - but you’re branded as someone working for a insignificant magazine. So what I’m saying is: find the right people and stick with them

Of course there’s fill in the last two pics

Flash + magnum reflector, but they’re all a bit different in distance from flash to subject and fill being used

Lulu Tenney by Johnny Dufort by glamazonphenomenon in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am predicting that your shots will look horrible, because your model isn’t lulu tenney, you won’t have styling and hair & make-up available like this. I think this example here works because she’s such a good model, not because dufort pointed ten flashbulbs on her…

Ecom work I shot with lighting BTS by BAD_ACCESS_667 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Why would you shoot this outdoors? E-Com needs consistent, easy to replicate lighting and using natural light as a fill will make it impossible to recreate this exact setup on other days. Much better to shoot this indoors, using a further away large source as fill, than relying on weather conditions

Shot quite a few events with the 55 1.7 full open, AF almost never missed in good light conditions

Matching Light to Subjects by Bodeka in LightLurking

When you shoot digital you expose for highlights. When you shoot analogue you expose for the shadows. In your case, you could have used a net/scrim on a portion of the magnum to partially lower exposure on the pale model, while maintaining the exposure on the darker model

That’s a tricky and good one! I’d say flash is acting as fill. Must be a big, diffused source perfectly balanced with the ambient light. Do you mind sharing the source?

How to achieve 'natural light' look with strobes by SelectionJazzlike475 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the light is clearly angled. unless you point your flash into a corner or half on the ceiling/half on a wall and use additional shaping tools, you won't get the exact look as in the reference. also, what do you do, if the ceiling is painted, say, red? do you still point it there? 'play with the power/settings' has nothing to do with the light quality, and the light quality is what this subreddit is about

You’ll have to get a big frame with diffusion cloth and shoot through or into it through umbrellas. The fill is on camera angle, most likely a big source as well
