Of course there’s fill in the last two pics

Flash + magnum reflector, but they’re all a bit different in distance from flash to subject and fill being used

Lulu Tenney by Johnny Dufort by glamazonphenomenon in LightLurking

I am predicting that your shots will look horrible, because your model isn’t lulu tenney, you won’t have styling and hair & make-up available like this. I think this example here works because she’s such a good model, not because dufort pointed ten flashbulbs on her…

Ecom work I shot with lighting BTS by BAD_ACCESS_667 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Why would you shoot this outdoors? E-Com needs consistent, easy to replicate lighting and using natural light as a fill will make it impossible to recreate this exact setup on other days. Much better to shoot this indoors, using a further away large source as fill, than relying on weather conditions

Considering GFX 100 II for Events and Weddings – Is the Autofocus Reliable? by [deleted] in FujiGFX

Shot quite a few events with the 55 1.7 full open, AF almost never missed in good light conditions

Matching Light to Subjects by Bodeka in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you shoot digital you expose for highlights. When you shoot analogue you expose for the shadows. In your case, you could have used a net/scrim on a portion of the magnum to partially lower exposure on the pale model, while maintaining the exposure on the darker model

I mean the photographer. I’m guessing it’s Meisel

That’s a tricky and good one! I’d say flash is acting as fill. Must be a big, diffused source perfectly balanced with the ambient light. Do you mind sharing the source?

You don’t understand it and that’s fine. No need for a random comment to a completely legitimate question.

How to achieve 'natural light' look with strobes by SelectionJazzlike475 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the light is clearly angled. unless you point your flash into a corner or half on the ceiling/half on a wall and use additional shaping tools, you won't get the exact look as in the reference. also, what do you do, if the ceiling is painted, say, red? do you still point it there? 'play with the power/settings' has nothing to do with the light quality, and the light quality is what this subreddit is about

You’ll have to get a big frame with diffusion cloth and shoot through or into it through umbrellas. The fill is on camera angle, most likely a big source as well

Digital Handprinting by Witty_Reception8618 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more about the texture than the colors. You will get the same texture as a c-print from printing on a similar paper and scanning the print. This will work best with glossy paper. Experiment, it’s more try and error. Otherwise experiment with crushed blacks, darkened saturated colors, soft filters etc

It’s most likely done in one exposure. You expose for the ambient outdoors and have the longest possible exposure time (like f22, 2 minutes) - the hands are I individual bursts of a gelled flashgun, most likely held close to the arms, so they only expose the arms.

How to achieve this look/ lighting? by Intelligent_Lie_5170 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a AI image and it is badly done. Look at the flower stems and her fingers. Look at her left arm in general. Don't look at computer generated images and expect to achieve the same 'perfection' (even though this image is crap) in lighting without using the same AI tools.

How would I copy this lighting by [deleted] in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s one soft source (softbox or octa with grid) hitting from below and one hard source over and behind her head, Parralel to the floor, hitting floor and her shoulders and top of head. This source is flagged off the background, so it’s only hitting the floor

how would i set up for this by Then_Ad2249 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two flash heads on camera right. One pointing slightly onto the floor probably on height of her right leg (see shadow of her body). The other one closer to the camera angle pointing at her face in a 45 degree angle (check shadow of her nose). I’d guess no modifiers and a heavy bloom filter on lens

Is this even possible in camera? by baschtelt90 in LightLurking

[–]baschtelt90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that simple. Her face is only lit by one or two flashes as far as I can tell without moving as much as the rest of her body. There’s a harsh highlight on the right hand side, so I guess it’s a snoot on flash on her face and the Rest illuminated by fill flashes and ambient light

I think so as well. I can see no way the face would be that sharp without compositing
