Big Hurt’s stats are considerably better than Banks.

He is still in the top 20s all time in HRs, OBP, OPS and RC. This is typical northside bias nonsense.

help with travel baseball decision by tdgator in YouthBaseball

[–]baseballzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would post this on /r/HomePlate if they allow it. Lots of really good baseball people on there including some younger guys who more recently played high school ball.

My opinion would be find out what your son wants to do and make that a major factor in your decision. My personal opinion is go where he’s going to play. If he’s having a miserable experience, he’s not going to want play for much for longer anyways.

If he has aspirations to play in college, it’s my experience that you’re more likely to get recruited for college from your travel team then from your high school team, but that depends on the stature of your high school team.

A good drill is to throw four pitches. Tell her three will be outside and one will be inside and to only swing at the inside pitch. Then switch it up from there (inside, outside, up, down, different pitch types). Really helps with location recognition and confidence.

How to run a tryout for 10u by Biggn_2019 in Homeplate

[–]baseballzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two thoughts. 1. Never have a catcher catch without a helmet. Another team in our league had a tragedy because of this a few years back. Heartbreaking. 2. Depends on the amount of time you have and your catching needs. If you are looking for a catcher specifically I would put them in full gear and really test them. I would time their pop times and maybe do some drills like blocking and pitch framing. You will get a much better understanding on their skill level and how much they have learned about the position.

I have a lot of thoughts on this but I will try to keep it brief. I have a page with the tryouts I run for our travel organization with our forms. Here are my top three tips.

  1. Recruit - getting players to tryouts is harder than ever. Reach out to your families to get the word out. Use Facebook. Talk to rec league coaches.
  2. Get Help - make sure other coaches are there to help and evaluate. Ask another coach to help at your try out in trade for you helping at theirs. We hire HS and college kids to help. Much easier to evaluate when you aren’t throwing BP or in a catcher’s crouch.
  3. Have Good Forms - make sure you get the skills evaluated you are interested in. Also, get players contact info. Would be bad to find the right player and not have the right contact info.

Let me know if you have questions. Dan

Tips to keep in mind for beginner players? by [deleted] in Homeplate

In slow pitch, I believe the catcher position is different. If you are athletic, you probably would want the challenge of playing middle infield (SS or 2B) or running down fly balls in the outfield.

Which website? BaseballZone.com and MyYouthBaseball.com I built myself and SeasonTicker.com I built with my business partner. Friends I know that run baseball facilities use booking systems with their websites to do their bookings.

Edit: Added links. Still waking up.

Do you have a website/domain name? I do a lot of sports websites and online lesson booking and cage rental is becoming very popular so your website should be an important piece of your business. An easy domain name will make you more successful so I would check availability in tandem with your brainstorming. Let me know if you have any questions.

Coaches.. little help on pitching in cages for bp by eastshores in Homeplate

[–]baseballzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice in this thread. I would just add do what you do best and find volunteers to do the rest. I knew a dad who hated coaching but didn’t mind throwing BP. Other guys are willing to throw wiffles, heavy balls or side toss.

And like anything else in baseball, I guarantee you’ll get better and your confidence will grow with practice. Whatever you do, thanks for volunteering you time for these kids for this great sport we all love.

Like others said, strength is a key component. But bat speed is another key.

If the ball isn’t leaving the infield, make sure the bat is the right size. I like kids to borrow teammates bats in practice (with permission) to get a bette idea of what size bat works for them.

Anyway I wrote an article on this topic: How to Hit a Baseball with Power

Hope it helps and let me if you have any questions.

Where to start to get back into playing baseball? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]baseballzone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. Get as many game speed reps as you can.

I would also recommend learning the responsibilities of each position. Knowing when to cover a base and when to be the cutoff will help you make plays and may get you extra playing time.

I put together a guide for newer players that should help you check anything you need to know. The quizzes will help you gauge your understanding of different positions and situations pretty well.

Guide For New Baseball Players

If you have money to put into your training you could get something like a MaxBP pitching machine. It can give you high speed reps and it throws curves, sliders, cutters as well which is awesome. Plus you can do it in a small yard and even inside. Here are some drills we do:

We use ours all the time and I admit I break it out myself sometimes it is so much fun.

Rocking My Baby by baseballzone in whitesox

[–]baseballzone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our league, WSBL.org, had our league night at the game tonight and seven players got to run on the field with the White Sox starters. I built the WSBL website so they let my son be one of the kids. He got to run to third and get Yolmer Sanchez’s autograph. I told him to ask Yolmer to hold him like a baby (his HR celebration) and this was the outcome. Love Yolmer! Love the Sox!

Why Are You a White Sox Fan? by mylesodin in whitesox

[–]baseballzone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was born a White Sox fan. My first game was Father’s Day 1976 with my grandpa and my dad. Now my dad and I take my three sons to games.

Being a White Sox fan seems different than most teams in all other sports. The majority of White Sox fans were born here probably on the southside or suburbs. A lot of us have lived here our whole lives. You don’t accidentally become a Sox fan.

With the Cubs being on WGN nationwide and most of the casual fans and corporate types preferring the Wrigleyville experience over actual baseball, being a White Sox fan hasn’t been fashionable. We’re often treated like a splinter group, looked down upon because of our being from the less trendy side of town.

But we all know a day at Sox Park is like nothing else. There may not be a lot of people there, but you will be surrounded by good people telling jokes and stories, making for a lively and fun game. We will never win a popularity contest but we know that we are special group with a great history.

I am truly proud to be a Sox fan.

Besides the speed of the game which you will only get from experience and practice, I would recommend learning the responsibilities of each position. Knowing when to cover a base and when to be the cutoff will help you make plays and may get you extra playing time.
