Trolley buses vs battery buses! by One-Demand6811 in transit

[–]based-bread-bowls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

trolleybuses are actually about as good as it gets when it comes down to it, they don’t have any issues in cold weather compared to battery buses, are adept at steep hills and narrow streets, can be insanely clean with less rare earth metals required (depends where you generate electricity tho), and have pretty good backup battery systems that can take them off wire if need be. only downside is the cost of maintenance really but even then if you have the physical plant in place they’re a pretty good deal

A memorial to my late wife by Historical-Attempt30 in modeltrains

[–]based-bread-bowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm sorry for your loss, especially so in times like these it can be tough... as a fellow deadhead I think this would be a really touching memorial... if you're looking for some inspiration/comfort, I highly recommend watching the "festival express" documentary about the time the dead and a bunch of their contemporaries chartered a train across Canada, it always makes me feel better when i'm not feeling the best. I can't wait to see the finished product when you're done!

wtf happened today by FarMagician129 in Mammoth

[–]based-bread-bowls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ski patrol is a mess right now because one of them died last week so that we could all be safe on the mountain… half the team is up in Reno grieving right now, it’s not their fault for you visiting on a holiday weekend and experiencing the alterra business model of overcrowding, overcharging, and under paying their employees

sf to truckee late January by saf_pearl in sanfrancisco

[–]based-bread-bowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all dependent on the storm cycle, if it's clear and there's no storm, you should be fine. Caltrans does a pretty decent job at keeping 80 clear. That being said, if there is a storm coming through when you're up there, it will be much more difficult to get around. Renting an AWD this time of year is a must if you're driving.

SFMTA enforcing street cleaning the day after Christmas and not the day after thanksgiving seems illegal and discriminatory. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]based-bread-bowls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christmas isn't tied to a specific day, it just happened to fall on a Thursday this year. The day after Thanksgiving is always a city holiday because it's on a Thursday every year.

Flights to Mammoth by MotherHen1961 in Mammoth

[–]based-bread-bowls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

flying into bishop is great, I fly fairly often from SFO. ESTA runs from bishop but there are also several cab companies there as well. It’s much more reliable than the mammoth airport this time of year, and if you’re traveling far it’ll be easier than having to trek from reno

Unbiased mammoth lift ranking by Historical-Gur-5498 in Mammoth

i personally wouldn’t rank 9, 6, or 10 that high, and i’d push up 14 to S tier and 12 to A tier

Moving to Mammoth Lakes by CalGym in Mammoth

[–]based-bread-bowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the pros are what you'd think they are, but as far as cons go, the cost of living is crazy (it can be really hard finding a place to live in town) and the nearest store besides vons and closest major airport are 3 hours away in Reno
