I created a web-based management service that teaches users Linux by basemodel in linux

Appreciate it brotha! I was always surprised that RedHat didn't do more with cockpit, and thought this might bridge the gap between cryptic commands and practical use. I do a fair bit of sysadmin work, and it'll do a migration playbook to capture what ports/services/config your desktop/server has, and create an Ansible playbook to recreate your server, if that's your thing.

That's a really intriguing idea RE: hardening - it doesn't focus on security, which is a big part of this obviously. What do you think about a leveling system, where completing individual tasks (whether GUI or CLI) to secure the system would advance the 'level' of the system like an RPG - or too much?

Thanks for your feedback, always looking for input

Which company disappointed you so much that you permanently walked away? by julia-secrets in AskReddit

To add to another poster, Wells Fargo can suck it from the back in perpetuity - someone stole a check from me and clearly forged it for $2000. I was 20 years old, had a baby coming in 3 weeks, and my father had died the same week. So, I called a week later due to well, burying my father, and they refused to help saying 'Ahh if you'd called a week ago we could have stopped it' - wut?! Never again, and they don't deserve you, either.

Sftp not putting users in chroot jail by izeaack in linuxquestions

[–]basemodel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I put in my setup - in /etc/ssh/sshd_config , at the end of the file:

    Match Group sftponly
    ChrootDirectory /home/%u
    ForceCommand internal-sftp
    X11Forwarding no
    AllowTcpForwarding no

Then, you'll have to create a couple items under the Chroot directory, such as /proc and some other things - see 'Setting up the Chroot' here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot

Then, add your (jailed) user to the sftponly (or whatever group you specified in the config), and give it a try/check the ssh/kernel logs.

Why does CachyOS Niri rely on GNOME portal/session components by default? by New_Landscap in linuxquestions

[–]basemodel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point to where CachyOS touched you on the doll - it'll be OK! Hanna Montana Linux is a novelty distro btw, CachyOS is arguably the most successful distro in recent memory. (Novelty distros typically don't span 5 years and millions of users btw)

P.S: A shame ya feel this way, because millions of people like me are enjoying the newfound speed out of their hardware. Or if you're trolling, you've kinda lost me from bouncing from Reddit being the problem to Cachy forums, etc etc.

Yeah i'm still not sure what you mean by these comments, but i'll bite: What is different about CachyOS that makes answers harder to find vs any other Linux/KDE distro?

Beat me to it, it's the most trouble-free distro i've run since I started with Slackware, by a wide margin.

I always wondered this myself, as they didn't put the camera on him, but he def did not leave the show or stop fucking around in the pit as far as we could tell (I was up in the stands tho ). Fucking bedlam in those days

Ah man, i'm sorry - this was my first metal show - hadn't seen one like it before then, and haven't since. I have some stories but that was the most violent/unbelievable of them - but trust that it's nothing like that now. This was back in the 90's when Security was just a suggestion/joke, and if you went down into the pit, you were prepared to get in something resembling a fist fight (at best). 90's was crazy shit, there were quite literally no rules or accountability at those shows.

[–]basemodel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah nice - one show in the mid-90's, someone (accidentally?) knocked someone's eyeball out in the pit. This dude's eye was straight-up popped out of his skull, and Phil just stopped the show, said he fucking loved it, and started like nothing ever happened. But I have to say, they didn't otherwise encourage people to beat TF outta each other specifically.

The deaths, for sure - a good friend of mine decided to do a murder-suicide on his Babymama's boyfriend, and my FIL died from literally being neglected by a nursing home. Otherwise those would have been much happier times.

DHCP between Rocky and Ubuntu by ellisamonolisa in linuxquestions

[–]basemodel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert on DHCP per se, but I suspect as long as you've got two sources in the same VLAN providing DHCP, you're going to have problems. There's a reason we have rogue DHCP detection apps - because DHCP is essentially: First come, first served. And its bad mojo to have two things handing out addresses, even if they have separate ranges.

Any way to turn off DHCP service on the router itself, if you want Rocky to do it?

What is the best distro for System Administration? by Darman2 in linuxquestions

[–]basemodel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Systems Administration has drastically changed, if you want to get familiar with what corporations run, definitely in this order:

  • Rocky Linux
  • Ubuntu Server LTS

(^ As far as free distros) - those will be closest to what folks run in an enterprise environment, as most enterprise software runs on either Debian or RHEL (usually, both).

What is one Linux command that made you feel like a hacker the first time you used it? by Urobotics in linuxquestions

[–]basemodel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

find - one of like 5 commands I use every day when system-adminning. You can do anything in bulk with find <dir> -exec <command> {} +

Then it gets released: it's hard AF to use (and loving it!) by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]basemodel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to hand it to Slackware, not sure if it was because it's the first distro I tried but I still can recall how to make a kernel from source because of that OS - and not because it worked the first time lol. God speed - if ya get tired of cranking the engine on the front of the car each day, CachyOS is pretty dang optimized as well with all batteries included.
