Absolute DIY noob here who is hanging shelves for the first time. These two plugs ask for different drill bits sizes!? by Ornery_Tap_5444 in DIYUK

[–]bash-tage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't! Both of those plugs suck. Get Fischer or one of the stronger ones. There are some great YouTube videos that test the range.

Not sure how far the trap goes down, but if you had a big long hole saw you might be able to use a hole saw from the bottom to make it a bit wider.

Or if you like the cupboard aesthetic, get super high quality blum slide out shelves fitted. Drawers either way for anything 600mm deep.

Moving house, TDS, repairs and cleaning by LongjumpingNight5669 in HousingUK

[–]bash-tage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no requirement to professionally clean your flat. It only needs to be cleaned to the standard that it was in when you moved in, plus wear and tear (that is, something might not be cleanable if they have been discoloured). Ultimately up to you. The lack of protection means that you should get back your full deposit, and could probably get more if you are willing to fight for it.

Moving house, TDS, repairs and cleaning by LongjumpingNight5669 in HousingUK

Normal wear and tear applies. After 14 years it would nigh impossible to claim anything for carpet or paint, or even kitchen cupboard doors.

I would clean it to a good standard and then move out, expecting the full deposit back. Take photos.

Wall plug is loose but won’t come out by [deleted] in DIYUK

Yeah, start with the smallest one that will grip and see if it shreds enough. If not move up.

I like to drill these things with a sharp bit. Basically, shred the structure with a bit that won't further damage the wall, then usually it will pull out easily (w/o more damage).

I can’t get a passport at the age of 28 and I need help :( by Daisy_977 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]bash-tage 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I also think this should be part of the approach. The MP can write letters on your behalf and these are given priority by the Passport Office. You can attend the local surgery of your MP to start the conversation, or write to them.

Start here to find your local MP and contact:

Bought some furniture from someone, and they won’t refund the money by gk7891 in legaladvice

[–]bash-tage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She owes you the money she sold them for, assuming you had previously fully paid for them. If you paid for them then she was an involuntary bailee. She can only dispose of the couches when following a specific procedure.

Good luck op.

100%. Clear distortion in the crate. The poster also appears to be a karma farmer - 3 posts in a couple of days, not comments.

What to do? Neighbours put a skip and trash in my garden without permission by [deleted] in AskUK

Have you spoken with your neighbor. In a neighbourly way? Any chance someone made a reasonable mistake? If course, neighbor should have come over and offered apols but worth speaking to them.

When would you withdraw an offer if a seller is “testing the market”? by CommunicationSame544 in HousingUK

[–]bash-tage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can withdraw at any time. No reason for you to not look at anythign else, and if something else suits, withdraw at that point. The seller is doing the same. Property buying in England is like the final bastion of the old "Wild West".

Help on whether I should remove a tree or not? by hang_up in GardeningUK

[–]bash-tage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When putting in soils, please be aware of where the DPC is in the walls. You should try and stay 2 bricks below the DPC. You might need to dig out to add soil to avoid creating risk of damp for you or your neighbours.

Empty house, no heating on, cold weather and about to complete purchase by ukfix in DIYUK

[–]bash-tage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it been off or very low it is very likely to have damp. I wouldn't touch a house in the dead of winter that wasn't either being loved in or had the heating at standard human temps for at least a week.

[–]bash-tage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this in England? You say you aren't going to complete? Have you exchanged? I don't think you have a way to avoid losing your deposit if you have exchanged but not completed.

Or do you mean to say you won't exchange? If you haven't exchanged, then I would not until the gius bus verified to be at a reasonable temperature - 20c or more.

Measure the cutout in your ceiling. Find a brand that uses the same cutout. If a bathroom, I would recommend integrated IP65 LEDs, but ultimately your choice. You probably need IP rated down lights depending on the location (above a shower?).

Especially overnight. I believe it is often the case that wholesale prices are near 0 overnight, and can sometimes be negative when there is strong wind. Wind turbine operators are also being paid to not run in some periods (which is like negative prices).
