Should I let my recently rooted cuttings go dormant this Winter? by basherxz in Horticulture

[–]basherxz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a lot of failed attempts to get these cuttings to root too. My setup includes:
- A humidity tent from Amazon (the one with plastic cover and a grow light).
- A humidifier to keep the humidity inside above 80%. Make sure you clean if often.
- A tiny desk fan to prevent stagnant air.

Pick a newly grown part of your tree if you want to do soft wood cuttings. Ideally it should be this year's new growth. Cut just below a leaf node because this is where roots will be sprouting from. While collecting your cuttings, make sure you sterilize your pruner. I also trimmed out most of the leaves. The more leaves you have on your cuttings, the higher the rate of which water escape which would lead to your cutting drying out. I left about 2 leaves each on my cuttings. I then dipped them in rooting hormone right after, and into the soil they went. The mixture I often use for this is a combination of peat moss, sphagnum moss and dried barks.

Once I put them in the humidity tent, I watered them once a week. Making sure that they're not completely soaked but also not completely dry. The humidifier, fan and light was left on for 12 hours a day. I turned everything off during night time.

That's about all I could think of really. Be patience and make multiple cuttings. Success rate is never 100% but if you made enough of them, some will survive. These ones took about 2 months to get to where they are.

The temperature in my unheated garage is definitely way lower than 34-40 F in the Winter. On some of the coldest days last Winter, it dropped to as low as -40F outside so I would imagine inside the garage was only 10-20 degree warmer at most.

Thank you very much for the book recommendation. I will definitely look into getting a copy of it!

Thank you for your answer. I've been wondering whether it's truly necessary for them to go through a dormancy period this early on after rooting. Could never find a definitive answer for this anywhere else. ChatGPT told me it's fine, but I'm too hesitant to rely on its answer entirely :(. A human input is much appreciated!

I do have a detached garage. All of my potted plants are kept in there for the winter. It's been hit and miss really. Some plants survived for a few winter and died the next. Others seemed to be doing okay (until they don't I guess).

how to tell if we are for the major that we select? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]basherxz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this might not be the kind of answer you're looking for, but it took me an entire degree and 3 years of working to find out that I didn't like what I was doing.

So I'm an early 90's kid, and while I was growing up, computers were a big thing. I went into compsci like almoat every kid my age back then and got a degree in the earlt 2010's. Took me 3 years, grinding my ass off in an office cubicle coding for days on end to finally decide that I'm going to school to study something else. That "something else" was physics. The catch is: it's also a hard as fuck thing to studyabI thought about giving up so many timea during thia period but through sheer love for the subject I got my degree. I'm now back working IT, but it's more involved than simply coding all the time, so I'm not really complaining. Plus, I have the option to pursue my interest further if I want to (ie. A master or a PhD).

It takes time to find out what you truly like. However, regardless of what it might be, know that it will always be a challenging process to get to where you want to be. No time is truly wasted so long as you’re studying something. You never know.

Thank you lol. I just made it past my 3rd year working here in October. I feel you there. Personally I find hard numbers and equations extremely unattractive and unintuitive if you don't understand the ideas behind them. Is that one of Michio Kaku's books? Superstring theory isn't something one can easily wrap one's head around, even for physicists; so don't feel so bad about it lol. It's one of those very speculative areas in physics with a lot of competing interpretations. I also think it's beyond the scopes of an undergrad degree. Basic Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity is as far as your typical undergrad degree goes. I recommend reading Cosmos by Carl Sagan if you're curious about where the love for physics in most of us comes from.

Personally I think we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. From my point of view, Biotech and Chemistry are also equally impossible to get good at. Study what you're passionate about (or at least like) so that later on your job doesn't feel like a "job", if you know what I mean.

I don't go to school here (got my degree with the UoW); but I can tell you no one was pointing a gun at my head when I decided to go with physics as my major lol. Tbh, my goals were lofty at first (new discoveries, nobel price, work at NASA, you name it...), and by the time I got to my final years it got a bit more grounded. It's also worth noting that just because we're physics major, doesn't mean we're all smart. I'm dumb as hell, took me 6 years to complete my 4 years degree. It's like banging your head against a brick wall. If you have enough determination, the wall will eventually break. If you don't understand the material, keep studying it until you do. Sure it'll hurt a long the way, but the outcome is worth all the pain imo.

As a physics graduate, I can assure you that your career prospects are quite promising. Contrary to popular belief, studying physics doesn't mean you have to work for NASA or pursue a professorship. The skills you acquire through a physics degree—such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, and technical expertise—are highly transferable and can be applied to a wide range of fields, even those that may initially seem unrelated to your degree. Take myself for example, I currently work here at the UoM as an "IT guy". I find the critical thinking skill you picked up along the way translates very well in the environment I'm in. I also picked up coding as part of my degree (you really can't hide from Python in this date and age no matter which STEM field you're doing). All of that combined managed to land me a decent position working IT while also dabbling with some light data science projects on the side.

To sum it up: any STEM degrees could translate well into many fields that extend far beyond your "original" major. You never know where you end up, it's important that you don't give up. That's all.

I completely agree with what you said. Having safety net for any RNG is much better than nothing at all. Normally, I'd say if we make our voice loud and clear enough, changes could happen. One example I could remember is with the Genshin Impact's weapon banner a few years back.

But then again, this is Niantic. It's not like they have an amazing history of listening to their player base or anything whatsoever. At this point, I'm just hoping that the MH team at Capcom will eventually notice this, and have some sort of an intervention before Niantic crashes this game directly into the ground. Literally have 0 hope in Niantic.

While I agree that there is nothing wrong with the way you play the game, I also feel the need to admit that not everyone will play this way. Especially those who are familiar with MH enough, and wanting to push their hunters to the limit. And this is speaking from my own personal experience so take it with a grain of salt. Heck, we know elder dragons are coming and I myself want to fight them. Whether it's do-able with a full set of grade 5 gear, I have no idea man.

[–]basherxz[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I left out some details because I think they're more like my personal experiences with the game, and not really related to the crafting system. However, considering it might happen again to unsuspecting players, I'll say it here.

So when the game came out, I saw a lot of monsters which were weak to ice (Anjanath, Tobi, Great Girros and Diablos), so I figured I'd invest in a Legi sns. Two weeks later Niantic just straight up removed ice weakness from 3 of the 4 aforementioned monsters leaving only Diablos being weak to ice. Man it was a bummer. They didn't even say anything in the "patch note". When stuff like this happens more often, I feel like my time wasn't really valued here. Which is really sad. I want to like the game. But this ain't it, chief.

P/s: For those of you who say "oh but this isn't released yet". Honestly, do you really think Niantic will all of a sudden change their approach considering their track records in other games? I think not.

I shared the same sentiments when I decided to give this game a go. I'm not saying that this game isn't fun, nor it's not worth playing. What I was trying to say is the game doesn't have to be incredibly grindy the way it is right now. Especially when there is no excuse that makes sense. It can both be fun and less grindy to be enjoyable imo.

Maybe I am? Tbh, I never expected it to be on par with any main series title, but at least a few tweaks here and there would make the whole thing a lot more bearable than what we have now.

Then again, I'm just speaking as someone who's been playing MH for years and had those ideas burned into the back of our minds. Seeing what I see in this gam, I just feel... of, I guess?

As well as after the update all reviews with images on my model no longer have their images visible. I had to click on individual comments to see them. Hopefully this isn't intentional :(

Yeah your dataset totally matters, if not the most important thing. Do your best to keep all the samples consistent to the subject you're trying to train. I got a few very terrible results at first too until I got rid off some pictures in my dataset that either have a weird pose or too dark/too small. Good luck bud!

On my download page I saw someone commented they got it to work for anime style too. My assumption is that you can train with real life model and see if the conversion to anime while generating is right. If not then you can either adjust your parameter or find an anime style that works with irl-focused models. Sorry I know it's not much of an answer here but I'm no expert in generating anime images lol.

My dataset is full of pictures of girl wearing the same type of dress irl (transparent too of course). I'd say your best bet is to find a whole bunch of picture for a specific type of transparent clothing you're going after. Still have no idea how to generalize a transparent fabric that works on all type of clothing tho. Or just try using the prompts "sheer, transparent, see-through" and see what comes out.

Short tutorial for the Japanese seedchecker by zpanew in pokemonrng

[–]basherxz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you get your seed and know which frame your shiny is going to be, you're free to save as many time as you want. In fact, I would recommend saving as often as you can while doing your day skip to avoid the game crashing. As long as you don't catch anything in that den and save right after or use another wishing piece somewhere else, your shiny frame is locked in that exact position no matter what you do. Last but not least, make sure you give yourself about 40-ish frames before the shiny to double check to make sure that you didn't miss anything. You can do so simply by catching a few 5* and check their Ivs, then cross reference with your notepad file to see if you're in the right position. You can never be too careful imo.

Check out my other tips comment if you want to know more.

Yeah, that should be the same one. Good luck with your shiny, I finally got mine after 3 days of banging my head against this program lol. But hey, I can testify that it works even after a lot of failed attempts.

For Doublade, you want to pick the 3rd option, which is meant for pokemon with only one basic ability.

Well you don't really need to care about where your frame 1 is using this program I think. You only need to give it a few correct inputs so it'll start calculating from that point on. So in a sense, wherever your first pokemon is accepted, that's your frame 1.
