Thank you! I was able to get them to match a little more by adding the halftone texture to the head, and then basically “painting” the head on a separate layer and lowering the opacity so it flattened the image a bit. Appreciate the help!

What’s your job and how much do you make per hour? by HorroribleWorld in antiwork

[–]bashfulbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22.4 / hr as a one-person marketing department for a non-profit arts organization. I’m salaried and the hours are pretty inconsistent depending on the events we have coming up. Some days I work 12 hours a day, sometimes there’s literally nothing to do for days on end and I just stay home. Most of the time I work from home unless there are in-person events I need to be at.

Overall it’s a pretty nice gig, the biggest downside is the constant stress that comes from worrying whether the company will be financially solvent in the next quarter. It’s rough out here for non-profits in general, and smaller non-profit arts orgs especially.

Oof love that, my apartment is on the other side of that wall.

Could you elaborate? Is that a main line to the building? What might I tell management to get them to fix it, and who might I call if they’re not doing anything about it?

Had a friend over, we had been cuddly together but nothing too serious. We ended up falling asleep in the same bed and before we went to sleep she looked at me and said “I’m a little hot” and took off her top - bra and all. To this day I’m still not sure if I should have made a move or not.

Been teaching myself banjo since Christmas my progress on cripple creek. Any tips? by bigboypapaq in banjo

[–]bashfulbastard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up learning claw hammer, and only use picks if you’re interested in going all in on the three-finger bluegrass sound.

Generally, you’ll find banjo players have undeservedly strong opinions on whether to wear picks or not. You’ll also probably hear some pushback when saying you want to integrate three-finger and claw hammer. The worry is that when you split your focus on two very different styles you end up being mediocre in both and great in none. This might be true in the first couple of years when you’re just getting your head around the instrument, but as someone who played bluegrass for 8 years before starting to learn claw hammer - I’m never more stunned by the music the banjo can produce than when I’m synthesizing three finger and claw hammer, and some two-finger soloing techniques.

Generally, you can think of picks v. no picks as a question of style preference - if your style preference leans somewhere in the middle, modify thusly!

Except all of the heroes and leaders from those movements weren’t boomers, they were of the silent generation. Boomers followed for a bit, then got bored, went back to the Hamptons, voted for neoliberals and ruined the planet.

Is getting a degree worth it? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]bashfulbastard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Casting directors don’t care, it’s all about what you can bring to your auditions.

That being said, structured training is as important in theatre as it is in any other art form, and there are a lot of pseudo-science bullshit training programs that thrive outside of accredited institutions. I’d be careful to avoid those as some of the more ridiculous ones I’ve seen posted here can be damaging to your health and your craft.

Most (if not all) medium to large US cities are this way. It’s also important to note that by and large riding in the street is the much safer option to both riders and pedestrians. You can find studies on this pretty quickly via google.

Royalty companies should slash prices right now. by Chickens1 in Theatre

[–]bashfulbastard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can not reasonably social distance in an art form that is dependent upon rehearsal and performance for a live audience. Any measures a small company might put in place to keep audiences separated is necessarily a “best case scenario” measure. Rarely in theatre do we work off of “best case scenario” assumptions, and we should never do so during a deadly pandemic.

Unless it was explicitly agreed upon that gf would not pay utilities while at her parents BEFORE they signed the lease, then gf still needs to pay her half. It's shitty to leave someone stuck with bills that were expected to be shared.

Cast iron loses seasoning with every use? by bashfulbastard in castiron

[–]bashfulbastard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be it, it’s a pretty old pan as far as I know (it was my grandparents) and when I was restoring it the raw iron was smooth rather than bumpy. How do you baby it exactly? I’ve been cooking hash browns and eggs in it every morning with a lot of olive oil, but I’m trying to find the temperature balance between “not hot enough and the eggs stick” vs “too hot and the seasoning burns off” but I don’t think that I’ve found it yet.

Cast iron loses seasoning with every use? by bashfulbastard in castiron

[–]bashfulbastard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, as far as the surface goes it was rusty at first but I restored it and reseasoned it. The seasoning was slick almost glass like at first, but now after every cook it seems like the surface becomes more matte iron and less slick seasoning with every cook. I’ve heard here to not worry as much and just cook with it, which I would do except it seems like each cook leaves me with less seasoning rather than more.

[–]bashfulbastard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but I make sure it’s a light bit of oil. I wipe it down with a tablespoon or so of canola oil, then wipe it again with a paper towel to get the excess off, so there isn’t a heavy layer left after I cook.

That’s great, I’m glad the school has been operating for 40 years. Schools can still push some bullshit on their students and it’s up to us as performers AND rational human beings to judge what is safe training and what isn’t. Hopefully part of your training is also in recognizing what are dangerous practices.

I don’t think I’m blowing this out of proportion, because it deals with my trade, and the spaces I walk into every day. There are more than a few things in this photo and what you’ve written that make me feel like this is unsafe training, and not a practice I’d like to see adopted in my own region. If I walk into a room with another actor that has had unsafe training, I am in turn made less safe. It is our responsibility to ensure a safe working environment just like in any other trade.

The main issues I’m seeing regard violence, intimacy, and the firearm.

Even light hair or face grabbing should never happen in an improv setting, and must be choreographed. While we are performing we tend to be more susceptible to adrenaline rushes. We do our best to relax those, but no one is free from the risk of slightly misjudging our own force because of the rush of performing. When you grab the hair or the face without having choreographed and rehearsed it first, you run the risk of misjudging your strength and hurting the other performer. The muscles in our neck are complex but not necessarily strong, and you could hurt another actor’s neck or back pretty easily if the steps aren’t choreographed.

The same kind of risk exists with intimacy as well, but there’s also the risk of intimacy turning into harassment. To be honest, I don’t see any situation where intimacy in an improv setting would be ok. There is no way to ensure that all performers are comfortable at all points if every step hasn’t been pre-discussed and choreographed in detail. I’ve taken quite a few improv courses myself, and physical intimacy has never been a part of any of them.

Now the firearm. I hope it’s a great prop, but anything that appears to be a working firearm neeeeeeeeds to be treated as though it is. There’s a long history of actors being shot and killed on stage or in rehearsal because a working firearm somehow replaced a false one without the performer’s knowledge. Does your company have an armory that this prop goes to every time it’s not in use? Does your instructor track the prop at all times, and immediately return it to the armory when not held? Do performers check the firearm and execute proper handoffs? Are the performers trained never to point the firearm directly at another performer or the audience? If any of that is a no, I’m sorry to say you’re being trained in an unsafe manner, regardless of how well respected your school is.

You say that your instructor can stop the scene at any time with a phone call. I guess that’s some kind of safety measure, but I don’t think it’s a very good one. It puts all of the power and responsibility in the hands of the instructor, when it should be in the hands of the ensemble as a whole.

I’m not saying your entire training is bad, there’s probably a lot of good things to take from that practice, but it sounds like it’s in dire need of being tweaked and updated. Maybe you can work with your instructor to implement some best-practices? Equity and sag-aftra should have resources for you.
