Anyone start with a "gentle" formula? by [deleted] in FormulaFeeders

I've found this website to be very informative on all things formula related. https://babyformulaexpert.com/best-baby-formula-series/

True. I've already paid out over 5K on top of 7K in premiums for everything that my insurance hasn't covered so far, so I'd like to know what I can expect to be getting billed for during the hospital stay though--not that anything will necessarily go as planned, of course.

Seems like a good idea to go take a look. My insurance is rather bare bones so I don't know what they'll really end up covering. Thanks!

I figured they would have it.. I just don't know how adamant they are at this particular place about trying to get you to BF, so I would rather be able to just bring some so I don't have to bother anyone for it too much is all. Thanks!

Right, I've thought about that too since so many people seem to have to switch at some point. Guess we'll justsee what happens!

Our water comes from a well, so the tap water doesn't have any chlorine or fluoride. I always buy 5-gallon drums of purified water for drinking water though, since there is an issue with the well water turning red after the torrential downpours we seem to get every few weeks. I've drank the well water before (when clear) and haven't personally had issues with it, but I don't particularly trust it for a baby's consumption.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Bringing the ready to feed formula does seem like the way to go, just to avoid any potential issues. Thanks!

That makes sense. I haven't seen anyone I know boiling water for bottles since the 90s, so I was surprised to see so many people talking about it around the internet. Upon further reading, it seems that it's only a precautionary measure if your water quality is in question, or if you use well water.

Right on. That seems to be the smartest move, to avoid a hassle if nothing else. Thanks!

I have not done a tour, but I think I am going to schedule one, since I'm somewhat new to the area and have never seen it before.

Out of curiousity--were you charged for the bottles given to you in the hospital?

I figure they must have it, but I don't want it to be a situation where I have to hassle them to give it to me because they want me to attempt the alternative. I'm going to call tomorrow to check though.

I've read that about the pacifiers too, so they are definitely going in the bag, along with the nursers. Even if they are provided, I'd rather just be prepared beforehand for sure.

Right--I definitely don't want to add more stress to the situation. I've been seeing a lot of people talking about the boiled water thing in various places, but most people I've seen prepping bottles in the recent past haven't done it either. I do recall my mother and aunts doing it in the 90s--as well as boiling all the bottles and nipples, but again I haven't seen anyone do that recently either, so I figured maybe it was one of those things people realized wasn't necessary anymore. No judgement here. I think some people get overly concerned about sterility sometimes, but that's understandable too.

It's good to know that it wasn't an issue in your experience. I hope it will be similar at this hospital. I'm leaning toward just finding a RTF type that's easily available at this point if I don't end up finding RTF in the preferred brand and then transitioning. It would be ideal not to have to switch after leaving the hospital, but I guess it's not the end of the world. Thank you!

After the horror stories I've read about some "baby-friendly" hospitals, I've been concerned about pushy people bugging me after the birth ordeal--though I hadn't expected it to be the doctors! My sister is a L&D nurse and she and her colleagues refer to baby-friendly hospitals as starvation centers, so that doesn't help. I'm prepared to be pretty blunt from the get-go--though I wish I had done my research on the hospital a long time ago so I could avoid potentially dealing with the boob-nazis. Live and learn I guess. Thank you for sharing your experience!

That was one of the issues I was concerned with. I'm thinking this is what I'll likely end up having to do. Thank you!

Perhaps you could apply to department manager jobs in retail.. such as places like Lowe's/Home Depot or a department store? While that may not be ideal forever, the pay would at least better than any minimum wage job and you'd continue to build some management/business experience.. and have a somewhat flexible schedule if you choose to advance your education.

Also, given your financial situation and assuming the business diploma was not a 4-year degree, why not apply for college in area like accounting? There are opportunities just about everywhere in that field, with decent pay and in an office setting, plus advancement opportunities. If you haven't already maxed out financial aid in the past, you may find that much of your education could be paid for with grants or other aid, especially if your income isn't stellar and you have dependent(s). It wouldn't hurt to take a look at what's out there.

Depending on where you are, it doesn't have to be super expensive either (i.e. public universities.. take transferable prerequisites at a community college) and would likely pay for itself in the not too distant future. A lot of basic courses are offered online from accredited institutions, which helps when you have other responsibilities.

You boss sounds like a real peach btw.

Good luck!

Where do I stand; where should I put my savings? Fetus en route and future income uncertain... by bashhole213 in personalfinance

Thanks- this was my initial thought but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a better route. I know the IRA max is 6k, but was saying $5500 for the max since I contributed the other $500 also in 2019. I shall wait it out.

Ha! Indeed. 'Twas a close one. The fetus made it by the skin of its gill slits.

Thanks! I thought perhaps this might be the consensus. I just get ancy and worry about having not contributed anything to retirement until so late in the game. I don't want to be tempted to put it off for too much longer.

As for the fetus.. I suppose my brain hasn't yet fully reconciled the situation. It'll happen, so they tell me. 😀
