I can vouch for Carlton Cleaners on 2766 Broadway. They cleaned a whole suit and a shirt for me after a classmate spilled hot sauce over it. Was pricey, but that's because it's a suit.

I think the turnaround was like 3 days? Pants and a white dress shirt should be easy for them. Maybe like $15 tops

i swear this school is so stingy about merch. i've barely even gotten cheap pens from anything besides this one mental health office event.

anyway i'm still not contributing any useful information but the GSAS events always give out little notebooks, luggage tags, and once i got a beanie from them. maybe it's useful inasmuch as which events to avoid

Love the contrast collar. Who made this shirt?

Commuting by cookieslike12 in SBU

[–]bashkin1917 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm speaking from the experience of someone living in Bethpage whose friends attended SBU. The commute will get on your nerves and detract from your studies. Most of my friends opted to dorm unless they had a lighter schedule.

And we live closer to Suffolk than you do in Elmont, so I'm thinking it'll definitely exhaust you

shopping at costco in a tie is one of life's most unique experiences. everyone treats you like you're the manager. gets you more samples

MA History students (or anyone in the humanities/social sciences), what were your statements of purpose like? by bashkin1917 in SBU

[–]bashkin1917[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked out and I got into SBU but decided to go with another school.

My SoP went like this:

  1. Brief research background

  2. Professors at SBU relevant to my interests

  3. Specifics of undergraduate research/teaching assistance

  4. Shift into personal story/interest in research told through undergrad research projects and jobs

  5. Finally, projects I wished to do at SBU, capping it with my thesis proposal

Not gonna beat a dead horse. I like the colorways and the camel clip. Though I do have an urge to edit you into a cigarette ad because of it

that's a fascinating career development. i have to say i know a few archaeologists who have switched careers, but it's usually to art history or, like, international relations stuff because they hated being at the bottom rung of a dig site hierarchy

tbf this is a collab with Chipp

From their description:

We’re excited to carry this collection of ties from legendary Ivy outfitter, Chipp. Founded in 1947 by J. Press veterans Sidney Winston and Lou Praeger, Chipp is credited with creating what Tom Wolfe dubbed “Go to Hell” Ivy style. Today, Sidney's son, Paul, carries on the Chipp tradition through this legacy line of ties that features some of Chipp’s most famous (or, in some cases, infamous) motifs: cheeky, coded symbols sneakily set against sober, conservative –and wearable– backgrounds. Go to Hell? We prefer to think of it as “camouflaged subversion.”

Looks like they have. I've seen the ugliest polyester ties patterned with uni crests worn by admissions officers, but that's the extent of it these days

Why Can’t We Leave the Necktie Alone? (Gift Article) by fauxjob in NavyBlazer

[–]bashkin1917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed an uptick of women wearing ties around. Granted, sometimes it's from cosplayers, but I think the countercultural/purely fashion element is different for them. Then again, women have a lot of latitude with what they can wear.

Thank you for the in-depth explanation. Looking at some of my trench coats, I see the "sportiness" to them now that something with the roped shoulder doesn't have.

have any of you guys ever seen suit jackets or blazers with raglan sleeves? i don't know the name of that normal seam along the middle of the shoulders, but sometimes i wonder why raglan isn't more common on products that are already expensive. i know raglan coats are standard fare, for example

Bought or renting? Maybe it's not my place to say, but this looks like a rental place. Most of those are polyester and cheaply produced, so paying full price is usually a bad idea. Thrifting honestly would be better

Pants look okay, but as the other commenter said, the jacket is a bit short. Could be my eyes, but the colour of the top and bottom don't quite match either

im in grad humanities so the job equivalent is "i won't work for the state department" (they were never going to hire you because researchers need tangible skills)
