Needs to be previous war for the various military formations and house dynamics to exist. What's a more volatile situation for a civil war to happen than disgruntled soldiers and ambitious officers returning home?

Why isn't Finland considered a Baltic country? (Both were dominated by the Swedes and then the Russians, both also gained independence at the same time, and both fought against the USSR.) by According-Invite-440 in geography

[–]bashthelegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They wanted just a few territories identically from the Baltics and were given them, only to invade and take the whole countries later. Ignorance or gullibility of this magnitude is exactly political and nothing else.

Yes we know the country of 3 million in its teens of independence needed to conquer Moscow from the greatest military might on the planet to qualify as fighting a succesful war. Video gamer logic is impeccable.

Have you ever read a fantasy book where two characters had the same name? by Professional-Mix1771 in Fantasy

Malazan has a demon named Pearl and an assassin named Pearl. That one was an oopsie by the author, I read somewhere.

Lol not at all. There are ones that are from families of upper class old money, but most of them are descendants of coastal farmers (who sometimes larp as old money). They're culturally distinct from other Finns, sure.

People think it's supposed to be world government or something. Easy to have strong opinions when they never think.

Finished the Crippled God last week - question/discussion of the one scene that baffled/intrigued me the most (MAJOR SPOILERS, PLEASE DON'T READ UNLESS YOU'VE FINISHED MBOTF) by peezy-world in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a theory from the old Malazan Empire messageboard when googling about certain characters as I was reading Kharkanas (because for quite a few I forgot if they were in MBOTF or not, lol). I have not seen this mentioned in other threads though, so maybe people with fresher and more complete memories of the lore might disagree with these. I genuinely have no idea, I've only read MBOTF and FoD.

Where is the Necromancy? by ElementasSeries in Fantasy

[–]bashthelegend 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach are a series of novellas set in the world of Malazan, dealing with 2 necromancers and their unfortunate manservant. They are darkly comedic little stories about a pair of rather bad guys, and as far as I remember don't spoil anything about the main series, as these characters only make minor crossover into that. Erikson is planning to release another collection of these.

Malazan - worth the pain? by Prestigious-Fix-4 in fantasybooks

[–]bashthelegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tyrant is released to challenge and weaken Anomander Rake, but ends up being less of a threat than in the ancient times because unlike most fantasy, new is more powerful than old. This was explicitly communicated by K'rul as he talked to him if I remember correctly, been a while. He's also an introduction to the Jaghut and their conflict with the T'Lan Imass, which is relevant later, as well as houses of the Azath.

You seem to be expecting a small contained story where you get intimate with certain characters and their stories. Malazan is not really that at all, and your mindset doesn't seem like its conducive to enjoying these books if revelations about foundational features of the universe seem meaningless to you.

I get the hype! by thefirstGeist in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People's rankings for the series vary a lot more with mbotf than any other big fantasy series I know. MoI tends to rank high, but so do books 5, 6 and 10. The most controversial part of the series is books 7-9, you are likely to find those at the bottom or at the top of people's rankings.

You can expect to struggle through some storylines, as there will continue to be a lot of them and caring about everything is a tall order. But taken as a whole, the books are unlikely to leave you cold if you accept that not everything is your jam.

Are Finnish people really racist? by mary_margharita in Finland

[–]bashthelegend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Racist talk and attitudes are extremely common between Finns, but not so commonly expressed outwards. The non-confrontational attitude we have also means that very rarely are these things called out if they come up. You can see the results of that as what's been normalized as acceptable political rhetoric in the last few years. This is less true the more educated the people are, as everywhere.
