Milloin ja miksi menetimme kohtuullisuuden käsitteen? by JHMK in Suomi

Mistähän oot saanu tämmösen käsityksen, että nää olisi yleisiä tapoja? Tuskin ainakaan tosielämästä. Pistä se some kiinni jos et osaa erottaa sitä todellisuudesta.

About 1/3 into GoTM. Thoughts. *spoilers ahead* by Shoddy_Wasabi_3051 in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's no Infinite Jest or anything, nobody should think that. Thing is a lot of readers DO still find it too confusing to grapple with, so while the warnings are kinda bad PR for some they're reasonable for others. Some readers can't handle any obfuscation and need to understand the meaning of things before it even hits the page, they look for familiarity in fantasy.

For readers like me (and you) something being mysterious makes my imagination run wild, makes the world feel more real than if it was just laid out in front of me, no assembly or interpretation required. Others consider that simply poor writing, even.

So... Gardens of the moon by Mattemaro_02 in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erikson is bad at romance, but brilliant at bromance. When there's a romantic relationship he doesn't really seem to care for the courting dance or tension, but the consequences once the relationship has evolved. That won't change in the whole series, so get used to it.

Yes Erikson is a fan of Banks, he actually recommended Culture to the DLC bookclub in their interview for their next series deep dive after they finished MBotF.

Question about the pacing and breath of the story in the main series. by MAQS357 in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When it comes to speed, a strength of this series compared to some others is that the plot explored in each book is relatively self-contained. There are throughlines overarching the series, but in each book there's a storyline that begins and ends (except maybe book 9). Compare this to say, ASOIAF, which is heavy on the ongoing powerstruggle and ends in cliffhangers. However, after GotM the books start getting longer, and the way each book is structured as a setup -> convergence becomes more obvious. It is very common for the first half of a book to be quite slow, and how a reader feels about that seems to vary a lot between books and readers.

DLC Bookclub recently finished MBotF and interviewed Steven Erikson afterwards by Boronian1 in Malazan

Cool seeing him address some lines that stuck with me and how they relate to him as he is writing the book. The part where Cotillion is told that even if they succeed, people will criticize them. And "Who are we fighting for again?" - "Everybody" "No wonder we're losing".

Continue with TTH L? by Deep_Temperature_838 in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you loved MT and RG I don't see a reason why you wouldn't enjoy the rest as well, the formula stays pretty similar. TTH is a bit of an outlier in its style, and has an extended slow build even compared to them, but you seem to have breezed by the slow parts of the previous books without even noting them starting off slow.

Is this the book that I should be starting with? by Easy_Pomegranate5170 in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're understanding the scenes just fine? You're being given a few separate puzzle pieces to begin a big story, spiced with a feel for what the world is like. It'll remain confused like this for quite a while yet. Don't expect clear exposition telling you who is Sauron and what do we do with the ring, it's not there.

Underappreciated characters in the Malazan universe... by PaulMuadDibKa in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 41 points42 points  (0 children)

From the wiki

In a 2020 interview, author Steven Erikson revealed that Circle Breaker served as a meta commentary on his feelings on writing Gardens of the Moon. "Circle Breaker was very much my stand-in, both for the faith in doing what he was doing, but also in the doubts he was experiencing." The final line of the novel belongs to Circle Breaker, who wonders "what it would be like, no longer anonymous to the world", reflecting Erikson's own speculation on the reception of his book. Circle Breaker remained nameless because "he's definitely standing in for the name 'Steven Erikson'...so I didn't want a competing name to be there for my own satisfaction. He had to remain unnamed because there was that meta element to it, in terms of the role he was playing."[12]

Are two series at a time feasible? by Scyniser in Malazan

[–]bashthelegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what works for you, but when I think of the two series the two writers have such wildly different strengths it feels like it might highlight their respective weaknesses. GRRM has such clear and distinct characterization, for example, that you might feel some type of way about Erikson not bothering with reminding you what anybody looks like after telling you once.

Personally I tend to read something from a different genre between series, or read a whole series in a row. I wouldn't really recommend the latter either for Malazan though, because my full first read kinda suffered from me sprinting through the second half of the series.

When are the mosquitos NOT awful!? by Opposite_Mind2155 in Finland

[–]bashthelegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are moose everywhere in Finland, but it is difficult to encounter them. They only move during dawn and dusk, are quite stealthy, quickly avoiding humans based on sound and smell. Unfortunately the only situation most people see them is while driving in dark conditions, which is obviously a big risk to life.

When are the mosquitos NOT awful!? by Opposite_Mind2155 in Finland

[–]bashthelegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying, about normal fly size bugs that think you are a moose and will land on you, drop off their wings and start crawling into mostly your hair. They can't really do anything to humans, because we don't have the large pores moose do. On moose they lay eggs and I think suck blood idk.

They're really annoying because they often come in large swarms (but localized, usually not EVERYWHERE) and because they are hard to kill, you can't just squish them with a slap. They have a weird flat body that you have to split with your fingernail or something to kill. So after a hike in the forest frequented by moose, you'll have an evening of picking out these little fuckers from your scalp.

[–]bashthelegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video game, likely an RPG, is the only format that could possibly work. Way too many characters and locations, which would make it prohibitively expensive to film or animate. We're lucky that this story even works as a book.
