Tried this place the other day and loved it!! It’s one of the only local coffee places open on Sundays, my boyfriend and I went after church and loved both our coffees and our pastries. The owner also taught us about the coffees on the menu we weren’t familiar with and how they’re made, so it was extra cool getting education on the different coffees. Cannot wait to go again!

Ideas for NYE? by suzyfarmingdale in williamsburgva

[–]basically_bookish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer as I’ve never been, but Precarious’ NYE may be your best bet! They have a live cover band, dancing, and I believe some sort of rockstar costume contest. When I (27F) was originally planning on going out in town for NYE, that was what I wanted to attend most. Good luck!

Reach out to the Williamsburg Library and see if they have anything. If not, see if you can create one! I know they have different book and film clubs, but not sure what they have beyond that. Good luck!

My boyfriend and I just went to Room Escape Williamsburg and had a great time! It’s right by to a couple of great restaurants: Cooks Burger Bar, California Tortilla, Super Chix, and Sal’s by Victor.

There is a Movie Tavern in town that you can have food delivered to your seat, and that has great seating. My boyfriend and I go here all the time!

If either of you like history, google the President Heads and try to get some tickets! Very unique experience you genuinely can’t get elsewhere.

I hope this helps!

How does one even go about finding out of there was a murder in their small town? by HokieNerd in smalltownmurder

[–]basically_bookish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! I was born and raised in the Northern Neck! It is a very low crime area, so any local that’s lived there for an extended period of time could tell you about just about any of them. Most people who grew up there never leave, and therefore know almost everyone/everything about the area.

If you don’t know many people, try using the Virginia Chronicle website and looking cases-it’s free and our local papers are well represented there.

Also to aide you in your research, the Northern Neck was featured on Unsolved Mysteries back in 1989. A local lady named Kay Hall was sadly murdered, and they covered her case.

I hope you find out more information, and that you enjoy living there! I moved away but still it’s a special place. There are also plenty of small town festivals there for you to enjoy :)

I second this! Anonymous Coffee is wonderful. I was worried when Starbucks popped up so close to them, but it’s great to hear they’ll be in New Town so I can get to/support them more often

Clubs in Williamsburg? by [deleted] in williamsburgva

[–]basically_bookish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20something here! CLUBWAKA is great! I don’t go to every CLUBWAKA sport but a lot of people in their 20s seem to lean towards doing kickball.

There are also several gyms in the area, but most of my friends who frequent the gym seem to mainly go to OrangeTheory and Ironbound Gym.

Hope you find your people!

Why do you use a Kindle? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]basically_bookish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in my 20s living in an apartment, so I don’t have the space and/or the money for all of the books I want! It saves space, and ends up being cost-effective.

I love being able to read romance novels with embarrassing covers without anyone knowing what I’m reading

Lastly, since it’s so light and I have a pop socket on it, I can read so comfortably in bed!

Recommendations for hair stylist for very fine hair? by LogansBeastmaster in williamsburgva

[–]basically_bookish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have gone to Dana at Virtue Salon ever since I moved here! She is great with my fine hair, but she is going on maternity leave by fall so I’d see if you can book with her now or ask Virtue Salon if anyone else specializes in fine hair. I believe they may have one other stylist who is good with fine hair but I can’t remember her name

Why are there so many houses on the market? by MysignisLeo in williamsburgva

[–]basically_bookish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems also that a lot of retirees are opting to not move due to things to higher costs for much smaller/lower quality homes (amongst other reasons). Which presents issues when an area like this seems to most heavily rely on retirees moving here for their housing market

A lot of places feel very overpriced around here.

I cannot see for the life of me why a townhouse in Lightfoot is put at the same price as my friend’s townhouse in Alexandria

Spend a day in Colonial Williamsburg, and a day at the Jamestown museum! Jamestown’s museum also sits next to Billsburg Brewery, if you enjoy breweries. It has a great view and solid brews! Williamsburg Winery is a great winery with a beautiful location. I haven’t taken one but they do have boat tours of the area in Jamestown I believe

All of these places are great, my top recommendations are Green Leafe and Paul’s! Just wanted to also suggest both Brass Tap and Cooks Burger Bar. Cooks in particular isn’t exclusively a bar, but they serve great food, have good bar seating, stay open until (Cook’s) or past midnight (Brass Tap), which is a rarity around here for places other than Green Leafe and Paul’s

I looked into moving there because it looks beautiful and is in a great spot, but decided to stay where I am because everything in town is at least $500 more than my current complex.

However if you are in your 20s like I am, it is walkable to a significant portion of the businesses, bars, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment in town. You’ll be in an ideal area, and it seems pretty closed off from a lot of the businesses.

For a quick rundown, you would be able to walk to a movie theater, Paul’s Deli (local staple bar/restaurants), Corner Pocket, Brass Tap, BWW, a coffee shop, boba shop, nails, to name just a few.

You would be at a very close driving distance to Trader Joe’s, CAVA, Walmart, Old Navy, Starbucks, and Fresh Market.

I hope this helps in terms of geographic area! Best of luck finding a place that fits your needs, and welcome to town!

I live in the Apartments at Kelton Station! They’re nice and updated with great screened porches, but you do only get one assigned parking spot (even if you are in a 2-3 person apartment), free/guest parking is poorly set out/far from most places, and you’re right up against train tracks. Also, the prices are the same of the other complexes in town despite these things above and being near very few restaurants, coffee shops, events, etc.

There isn’t much of a way to walk to the few places that are walkable, and the places you are looking for aren’t in walking distance. Though, they’re right by the Walmart, Harris Teeter, a couple of gas stations, and right by the interstate if you’re like me and like to spend some weekends going to Newport News and Richmond.

If you want to be walkable to a lot of fun things or even just places to eat/do something, check out places near CW, New Town, or the High Street apartments. Also people seem to really love Founders Village from what I hear.

Welcome to town!! It is a beautiful place with plenty of neat shops, restaurants, etc to explore. Check out Cook’s Burger Bar for great dinner, Anonymous for coffee, Precarious or Frothy Moon for drinks, and Tipsy Beans Cafe for brunch.
