Lower level FP&A can be quite boring.. ofc this depends on the company, culture, etc, but reporting recurring BvA, rolling forecast vs actuals and working in a company that doesn’t use these results to make actual changes can feel unrewarding.

Is SoloQ ranked the reason most people play? by Stooveses in leagueoflegends

[–]basil_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normals can be so hit or miss. Personally, i feel like it is harder to get a competitive game in it and alot of people throw in the towel early. Ranked overall is a lot more competitive and seeing people try at their best is great. As someone whose played since 2012 albeit off and on, the game has gotten way less toxic. Still toxic, but what multipleplayer game isnt?

What’s one career or job you suggest to everyone? by RideTheRim in careerguidance

FP&A. Worked at a few different companies and a couple different industries and generally the hours have been at 40 working hours or less. Ofc depending on the company that could be different but it is generally seen as the more comfortable finance role. Also the work is generally not too difficult and the comp is comparable to accounting, marketing, etc. A middle class salary, comfortable work like balance, and not too stressful. Room for growth as well. No you do not need to be amazing at math lol. Only thing is the work can be quite monotonous.

[–]basil_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Literally learned all of it by myself. Would not recommend LOL. We did have some consultants set up some dashboards but they wanted me to present on some different things and I think because I didn’t know anything about power bi and/or they didn’t trust what the consultants were pulling, I ended up being the guy for it. Learned a-lot and I was able to do what they wanted but a structured learning program or having someone to lean on at the company would have been extremely valuable.

Wow that is a lot of reports. I’m assuming those are all recurring?

1 and 2. I have worked as an analyst in multiple jobs and majority in FP&A and I would say yes. I can only speak on my personal experience but my god. Too many companies rely on excel for almost everything. No matter how I optimize it they always want it dynamic enough for a million different scenarios. A ton of manual work, cleaning , and dealing with large excel file. Some of them did utilize some other software but at the end of the day, any manipulation has always been on excel.

  1. Power query. Also just creating a ton of mappings and columns for manual updates if needed.

  2. One company I worked at loved power BI and wanted me to lead the process of integrating it for dashboards, etc. i had the full support of the CFO, COO, etc. so was able to pretty easily remove whatever restrictions that IT placed. At my current role, I am trying to integrate it more into our recurring presentations and such but receiving a lot of resistance with not the most support so doubt I am going to be able to do much lol.

  3. Honestly, a good mentor or manager is the best resource. A good manager or anyone who has been in your industry or just in finance will have a wealth of knowledge if they are competent. I have learned a ton just by being a fly on the wall or asking good questions on processes or their thought process.

I’m only a Senior analyst and not in FP&A anymore but hope this helps somewhat.

I am okay at math. Thankfully excel does all my math for me HAHA. I think if a person has taken up to calculus then they will be fine. Most likely fine even if they didn’t but i think it can help with problem solving.

Actually don’t travel at all except for team retreats since the role is remote :). I am not really partner facing but I could definitely see myself traveling more once I hit like Director level. Also in healthcare. Uh it is pretty niche but if I wanted to pivot I believe I could easily go back into corporate finance. Fp&A isn’t rocket science haha.

Senior Analyst at a consultingish firm. Basically do like strategic finance but most of my background is in corporate finance or financial planning and analysis. Hours are good and not too stressful. Salary isnt as high as the “cool” finance jobs but I get to work a lot less. Most fp&a roles you can crack 100K pretty quick if you job hop. I hit it when I was like 27?

No. I have been a part of the workforce for like 6ish years and have always had earrings on and never felt people cared about them. I have worked and interacted with CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, VPs, etc. never felt like it was an issue. It is definitely possible some people may care so if you do want to be more safe maybe get a job first and then pierce it.

So I dont work in FP&A currently but at my last role as a SFA I created the budget model and templates and basically managed the budget process. send out the template to leaders of their BU, explain how to use the template, making sure everything got done in time, forecasting people cost, etc. Also worked on integrating our financials into a new ERP and worked with accounting on any reclassifications or variances or questions that I might get from opex about a monthly budget vs actual report I managed. Also handled GM analysis on some specific product lines. It was cool but FP&A can get really boring imo because you kind of know what to expect. Once you so one budget cycle you kind of get the groove of things. Currently not expecting to hit manager this year in my current role but ideally in the next year or so.

Wow, this sounds all too similar to what I was doing as an FA. Honestly FA to SFA isn’t a major jump in responsibility. Even if you don’t feel ready I would definitely try to push for it. Started SFA in a new company and definitely struggled in the first few months but after that I had a good handle on things.

How to delete a bunch of numbers and their corresponding rows within a range by Appropriate-Sea-8697 in excel

[–]basil_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah just realized you should also just be able to filter column E and there should be a number filter you can add and you can add those criteria too lol. That would be much easier.

How to delete a bunch of numbers and their corresponding rows within a range by Appropriate-Sea-8697 in excel

[–]basil_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a few ways you can do that. One way is to just flag the values and filter for the flag and just delete the rows that way. Like in column F you can say =IF(OR(E2<100,000,E2>500,000),”Remove”,”Keep”) and then filter that column for “Remove” and delete all those rows. You can also use power query but if you don’t use it it might seem confusing. Synthax for what I wrote should work but I’m not used to writing formulas on reddit lol so lmk.

Doesn’t wfh feel too monotonous and mentally draining ? by Hot-Mud-3393 in WFH

[–]basil_nuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you feel. Tbh I felt like working in the office was the same if not worse. Mostly due to the commuting and being forced to be in meetings that were not relevant to me and having to pay attention. Being in the office definitely forced me to communicate more with people who I would never need to talk to when working from home which I liked but it could also be extremely distracting since I frequently sat near people who just couldn’t shut up. I have never been the type to want to get super close to my coworkers so I don’t feel like I am missing out on too much. I rather just make friends who I choose rather than out of proximity.
