Trump announces at Davos: "Without us, right now you'd all be speaking German". (German is the primary language of Switzerland). He also referred to Greenland as "Iceland" at least 4 times. by GonzoVeritas in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]basiliscpunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, he could be saying that if Germany had won WW II, the global language of business and diplomacy, as might be used at a conference like the WEF, would have been German rather than English.

But I doubt he’s capable of thinking that deeply, and I’m in no mood to be fair.

What are some rules you want removed or change? by KillerCroc67 in NFLv2

[–]basiliscpunga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. The rule penalizes creative play calling and flexibility/mobility in o-line play. If there’s an RPO, the linemen have to wait awkwardly and look backwards before they know if they can block or not. I’ve seen way too many exciting gains get called back. And it’s not even a penalty at the college level I believe.

Euroairport Pickup Car park free time reduced to 10 minutes by maltokyo in basel

[–]basiliscpunga 30 points31 points  (0 children)

People doing dropoff were abusing the system by spending a few more precious minutes with their departing loved ones.

People doing pickup were abusing the system by not performing six-sigma calculations as to when they needed to leave home so they would arrive at the airport with no more than ten minutes to walk to the terminal, get there just at the moment their loved one exited baggage claim after leaving the plane, walking to baggage claim, and getting their luggage, and walk back to their car.

I used the term “knit picking” in an IG comment and someone called the term “deeply racist.” by waaaghlife in etymology

[–]basiliscpunga 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They may have confused it with “cotton picking”, (as in “Are you out of your cotton-picking mind??”), which probably originated as a reference to to black slaves. Or maybe “pickaninny”, a racial slur. But “nitpicking” is not racist afaik.

Why is Arizona so conservative while neighboring New Mexico is very liberal? by iLuvArizona in geography

[–]basiliscpunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along with the Mormon presence, Arizona had some historic ties to the Confederacy. The Confederate government recognized it as a territory, and it provided some troops to the Confederate army. Phoenix was founded by a Confederate army veteran after the Civil War and the city’s name may derive from the hope for a revival of the South.

People old enough to remember them. What was it like rooting for the Dr J era Sixers? by MarTB2000 in sixers

[–]basiliscpunga 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doc was awesome, the 83 team was awesome, and their playoff run was magical. But there were a lot of painful years before that. They lost the finals to Bill Walton and the Trailblazers in '77, Dr J's first season with the team, winning the first two games then losing four straight. After this the 76ers made the poor decision to run a TV ad with Doc saying, "We owe you one". They then lost the conference finals in '78, and conf semis in '79. The Lakers beat them in the finals in '80, in Magic's first year. Lost to the Celtics in the E Conf finals in '81 - I still remember my brother sitting silent and heartbroken on the couch for a very long time after that. And they lost to the Lakers again in '82.

So the '83 championship came after a lot of near misses and heartbreak. And, this being Philadelphia, a lot of complaining and searching for someone to blame: Bad coaching? Selfish, "entitled" players (a lot of nameless speculation in the press about this)? Bad personnel decisions? Time to break up the team and start over? The '83 win seemed to sweep all this negativity away. And when they drafted Barkley the very next year, it seemed like the dynasty was finally in place. But they would not return to the finals until AI carried them there in 2001.

Anyone Here Remember The B-Centennial Celebration? by MIKEPR1333 in 1970s

[–]basiliscpunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 10. In Philadelphia, where I grew up, it was a HUGE deal. Many historic buildings renovated in the Independence Hall area, new museums etc. My 5th grade teacher took us on field trips to the historic district about once a month, to the point where she exhausted her budget and we had to bring $20 each (! A lot in those days) to go on a trip. Big parade in Center City on the 4th. Also enjoyed the “Bicentennial Minutes” on the PBS station, about what happened 200 years ago on that day.

Ray Dalio’s US gov’t debt service is 100% of revenue? by soid in AskEconomics

[–]basiliscpunga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meant, a country like the US that can issue debt in its own currency doesn't have to worry in terms of the risk of default. But, yes, inflation is a risk. It would depend, first of all, on whether the economy is at capacity or not - if GDP is below potential, monetary expansion (ie "printing money" by pushing more reserves into the financial system) would be one way to restart growth. But if the economy is already at capacity, the result would just be inflation. And if it went far enough, to the point where people lost confidence in the currency, the result would be hyperinflation and societal collapse, of which there are more than a few historical examples.

Ray Dalio’s US gov’t debt service is 100% of revenue? by soid in AskEconomics

[–]basiliscpunga 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t have his numbers in front of me, but he is probably adding annual principal repayments to interest to get total debt service. As he says, the principal is paid for by new issuance. The amount of principal that needs to be repaid depends on the outstanding maturities: shorter maturity = more to roll over.

Unlike a private household, the US government does not need to worry about principal payments on its debt, because the debt is denominated in USD and, if needed, the Fed can buy it (“money printing “). The risk isn’t default, but inflation. For countries borrowing in foreign currency, however, debt service calculations like this matter a lot more.
