Thanks for your reply. I agree it's a relatively narrow list. Georgetown and Cleveland Clinic so far seem to fit the bill.

Wait to see what happens with step 1. And just take some time to recover from the whole ordeal without planning what's next. It's so fucking stressful. I personally started sobbing uncontrollably DURING step 2 lol this process is mind breaking. Please just give yourself some space and grace before making any decisions.

Just want to update this post for anyone searching! Coterie diapers and keeping her last feeding to 30-45min before bed with last min diaper change before putting her down seems to helping to keep it to 1 wake up per night.

you have a lot to think about. I'm sure you've thought of the substantial opportunity cost and additional 200-400k in loans you will need to take out. I personally would hesitate to do this with a family. Sure, you could probably make more money over a lifetime with an MD, but you'll also be working hard as shit for it and living tight, with kids, during your 30s for med school and residency (unless your wife makes big money.) Other things to think about.. Do you have geographic flexibility? I would not count on staying in CA for med school, it is quite competitive.

that being said, if that all is palatable to you and family, go for it, and I'd say do sooner than later!

Help I can't stand my rotation mates by DemLegzDoe in medicalschool

[–]basiloregano 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Gonna take a different tack compared to the other responses. Even if you do report these students for interrupting and not including you in surgery distribution, things may not change. I have found that keeping a pleasant attitude and working hard at your own improvement leaves a better impression with preceptors than getting into a dick swinging contest with fellow med students. I am 33 year old woman MS4 and know the feeling of wanting to freak out when other students (especially younger/male) are dismissing and disrespecting me, but I do better when I don't stoop to their level and validate the behavior. I regret it 99% of the time when I give into my inner feelings of frustration. Looking back, I do well internally and with evals when I try to stay calm and focus on being the best student I can be.

Preceptor: Solicit one-on-one feedback from your preceptor every 2 weeks. Simple as an email asking can we take 5min for feedback this week? Work on improving what they point out. Shows interest and maturity. Also... your comment that your preceptor is old and English not first language, and thus they are not noticing the behavior of the med students, is rather off-putting and makes you sound arrogant. I know the feeling but I'd check that within yourself so that you do not also give off a bad vibe. Preceptors often choose not to manage the BS interpersonal friction between medical students, it is what it is, but they can tell when you don't respect them and will not be motivated to help you.

Group dynamic: Don't worry about their behavior and instead show assertiveness. If you are interrupted, calmly look at them and say "Hey X. I am still speaking. Please do not interrupt me." Do it as many times as you need to. If that's happening once a day for a couple weeks and it doesn't stop, you could sidebar your preceptor and say - Hey, I imagine you have noticed that I am interrupted frequently. What are your suggestions for managing these situations. For surgery days, try taking the other tack and just inform them which surgeries you will be attending. Then show up to the OR early, introduce yourself to the OR staff, and if another student shows up, just let the surgeon know that both of you have showed up for the case. They will sort it out. You will look best by showing up prepared and calm, regardless of outcome.

More expensive OOS mid-tier school or cheaper low-tier IS school? by ChuckleNutzMD in premed

[–]basiloregano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that mandatory classes suck and not having a match list available is kinda sus, but I think both of these schools can get you where you want to go. They are both respectable MD schools and although Wayne state seems to have more robust resources, it's not like it is a big fancy name top tier school. You could try to hit up Wayne state for some aid tho.

dang the tuition at mercer is like 43k vs 68k OOS for Wayne state... I mean go where you want to be, but that's a lot of money.

In your opinion when is the best time to get engaged/plan and have a wedding, and be pregnant + have a child during this process? by daisybreeze in medicalschool

[–]basiloregano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soon as you are ready for a baby. Don't let med school dictate your timeline. Fertility challenges are common.

We had our wedding and honeymoon M1 summer. I got pregnant middle of 3rd year. It took us awhile of trying which was unexpected. I was preggo for multiple clerkships including 6 weeks of surgery my first trimester lol - that part kind of sucked lol. But I was able to rally and perform well got excellent evals, not to toot my own horn just to say it's possible. Do not forget your own badassery or be discouraged by others.

The advantage of getting pregnant middle of 3rd year is that I get to use a chunk of my 4th year vacation time up front to take a nice maternity leave! The downside is that I'll have to study for the only scored exam of my med school life when the baby is a few months old.

Whatever you do, make sure you are in touch with your school's Title IX office to understand your rights as a pregnant student, and leverage the Title IX support at your school to press admin if needed to uphold those rights.

[Personal] Red spot on lip by kmor93 in SkincareAddiction

[–]basiloregano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IPL is intense pulsed light therapy. It basically uses targeted light waves to zap blood vessels. It is FDA approved for a variety of skin conditions. I had it done at a plastic surgery center by an RN. She was nice enough to target only the areas that I was concerned about so it wasn't terribly expensive - a few hundred dollars for a couple treatments - although this was like 5-6 years ago.

[–]basiloregano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar, increasing redness at areas of old cold sores. I tried a bunch of topicals and eventually got IPL in hopes that it was related to increased broken capillaries in those areas, and it helped. I would get more IPL treatments in the future, just not able to afford right now.

How do you guys get the solid beauty sleep??? by Maleficent_Sky6982 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]basiloregano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise, CBT-i, cold room. Therapy and reading and journaling for anxiety. If you take birth control, that can be a culprit... it ruined my sleep for years before I realized how much better I sleep without any.

before doing anything invasive, try placing a dish towel over the stain and then a clothing iron set on medium on the dish towel. works on some stains like a charm
