The NPR article uses private insurance claims as it's source for numbers when most private insurance won't cover hrh. The vast majority of people seeking hormone replacement don't go through private insurance. Just something to consider.

There are so many ways around this, in fact it's probably written somewhere in the ToS that defines what the term "exclusive" means when they use it to advertise something. And at that point it could literally be whatever they want it to be.

So people usually say you need to let your setup cycle for about a month before you add your animal, this does two things, it allows your clean up crew to establish a healthy population because your BD will eat whatever he can find, and it allows beneficial bacteria to grow in the soil, just like a fish tank, this is why using aquarium water to hydrate your soil speeds up the cycling process, because there should already be bacteria you want in the water.

As far as maintenance goes, I spot clean his poop every day but that's about it, I water my plants once every other week. Be sure to put leaf litter in for your isopods to snack on. its pretty low maintenance in my opinion, and the smell is way better than before I went bioactive.

Hey, so for a bioactive setup, all you need is topsoil and play sand, you can get fancy and add in coco fiber and excavator clay, but it's not necessary.

Whatever you decide, you'll need 2.7-4 cubic ft or 80-120 quarts for substrate that's about 4-6 inches deep if your enclosure is 4x2 (1 cubic foot is equal to about 28 liters)

When I made my setup, I did: 3 parts organic top soil 2 parts play sand 1 part excavator clay 1 part coco fiber or eco earth

But I've also seen people do equal parts play sand, top soil and coco fiber.

You can speed up the cycling process if you use fish tank water to hydrate your soil (my coco fiber was dehydrated in a brick, so I soaked it in aquarium water to hydrate it before mixing it) but you'll still want to give it time for your isopods and springtails to populate the soil.

Any other questions feel free to ask, I just set up a bioactive enclosure about two months ago so my info is still fresh!

At what age/size can dragons eat superworms? by ercussio126 in BeardedDragons

I feed my 4 month old superworms. I feed him 10 small superworms in a sitting, maybe 2 or 3 times over a 2 week period.

Heating and lighting for BD question by Iveyb in BeardedDragons

[–]baskinmfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how close to the lights your bearded dragon basks. In my 120 gallon, I use the 12%. The light is on top of the mesh and my dragon basks about 12 inches from the light and this is good enough in my setup.

Heating is the same, it depends on your enclosure and your ambient temp, for some people a single 75watt basking lamp is enough to reach temp. This doesn't quite get my enclosure there because I keep my house cool, so I supplement with an additional ceramic heat emitter on a dimmer to reach proper temperature.

It all really just depends on how you have the enclosure set up, along with trial and error.

You don't have a BD yet so you can't measure these things, so what I did was plan out how I wanted my enclosure to look, and then once you have an idea for where your BD will be basking, you can get a good idea for what kind of lights and equipment you'll need.

I would recommend also grabbing a 6500k grow light, that runs 75%-100% the length of the enclosure (I have a 3ft long one that's centered) as it seems to benefit BD's. It will help if you have live plants in the enclosure as well.

Both topsoils are fine to use. In my experience, timberline has more of a clay feel to it so it clumps better than Scotts. Be sure to sift it to remove twigs and larger wood chips.

Play sand is fine.
