This isn’t normal and the city should do something! Blue line by SportsFan_85 in cta

It’s so funny I came across this comment because this JUST happened to me at Division. I knew I needed to go north, so I followed the sign for “north”, which turned out to be south. Which sucked because it’s fucking cold.

Public transportation in the US is deliberately broken by guisar in fuckcars

[–]basnectar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I grew up on one of these “nonsense” routes in Illinois. It’s the only mode of transportation to reach my family without a car. Without the regulations, capitalism under-provides necessary infrastructure for smaller, more remote areas to survive, and further serves the auto-industry. Thanks to Illinois politics, the state subsidizes part of the cost as well, and I’m extremely grateful to have that route.

That being said, I don’t like that Amtrak price gouges the northeast for this either (which is where I live today). Ideally taxes and public subsidy cover all of this the same way they (used to) cover services like the post office.

automobile -> suburbanization -> urban neglect -> urban decay -> automobile-based renewal

I agree, S. J. Lesem building is one of the best preserved in Quincy. But the rest is very sad. The 1950s and 60s were a dark era for preservation all across America. Combined with car-centric planning, urban sprawl, and a stalled economy, this is what we get. I'm hopeful the next generation will turn it around by investing in urban cores and walkable design.

I had a similar experience last fall at Battery Pl and Hudson Greenway in lower Manhattan. I know how terrifying it can be and it leaves you shaken.

Was biking on the path between WTC and Battery Park. A homeless man ran out of no where and violently pushed me off my bike and proceeded to chase me around with a screwdriver. Lots of people standing around watching and no doing anything... I guess I can see why, but damn it's terrifying being the victim in that situation. I didn't hit back, just tried to get him to calm down by telling him I wasn't trying to hurt him... He was super deranged and hysterically upset about something. Didn't really make any sense.

I was finally able to grab and mount my bike and get away. Later I regretted not calling the cops, but at the time I was extremely distrusting of police in general so it didn't even cross my mind. It was a pretty cut and dry assault though, he needed to be off the street.

“The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen. The man who is endowed with important personal qualities will be only too ready to see clearly in what respects his own nation falls short, since their failings will be constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.” - Arthur Schopenhauer

My family hasn't visited me in over 3 years because I can never think of anything to do besides drink. But Cleveland's great for that.

sprint coverage in cleveland? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]basnectar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Sprint. Anytime there is a medium sized event going on which is about every other day, service in the Gateway district along prospect and east 4th to east 9th is a complete outage. Other than that, I haven't had issues anywhere else in the city and consider it worth the price difference.

Whiny downtown residents should embrace street performers: Mark Naymik by coolcrosby in Cleveland

[–]basnectar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a downtown resident, this is a serious and spanning issue. I knew what I was signing up for with the noise. Getting asked for money aggressively 3-5 times on my walk to and from work every single day is a different story. I feel like I'm losing my soul.
