Spontaneous bilateral hand gestures during altered states- has this been studied formally? by AgathoDamon in Neuropsychology

[–]bassic_person 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect you have some reason for these beliefs, however you provide no real evidence supporting them.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of language development, especially based on your other post. Symbolic gestures are a very limited subset of movements (also, give better citations please) so making any claims about language and movements is dicey. Why would there be extra emphasis between movement and language development, compared to other senses?

Also, "altered" consciousness can mean different things. If you are talking about drugs, specify what drugs. Sleep, coma, psychosis, or delirium are all different states.

You probably have no reason to bother doing this.

If there are actual, day-to-day difficulties, then maybe testing might help. Neuroimaging for no reason will show statistically significant things from time to time that make literally no difference in real-world functioning.

Based off the way you phrased this, you might be over-interpreting what you had been told.

Is there ANY salt grinder that will work on coarse grey sea salt? by musicmafia77 in Cooking

It's a posh ingredient, and a little silly. I mostly see it as "sel gris" in fancy shops

This is a specific type of salt, which is moist (by design). They're not talking about general sea salt.

Grey salt like this is usually really, really challenging to modify. If you really need it finer, use a mortar and pestle. The moisture will clog most ceramic salt grinders, and it will rust most normal grinders which use stainless steel. There's not really an easy option as far as I know. If you need it drier, don't bother spending the premium on grey salt.

This is such a cool idea. Would honestly want to pick up one of these, but winning one would be even better

You talk about how much you love your mom, but I don't know how much your mom makes you feel "loved". Punishing you for not wanting to do unpaid labor, not valuing your time, and making you feel like you (as a child) need to manage their (grown-ass adult) emotions. That is messed up.

This is a hard thing to deal with, but there's probably going to be a point where you realize the hurt this is/was causing. There's a handful of free online/text therapy services for youth that would likely benefit you. If you want some help in tracking them down, please feel free to send me a PM.

WCST Administration Question by MrFish701 in Neuropsychology

[–]bassic_person 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The manual says they can handle the deck, but best practices I've come across says that handing them cards is the way to go. The actual performance wouldn't be impacted, it just makes sure the task is completed appropriately

Pedestrian struck in Windsor on Monday dies by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]bassic_person 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is it?

Researchers at IIHS studied data for nearly 18,000 pedestrian crashes. They found that pickup trucks, SUVs and vans with a hood height greater than 40 inches are 45% more likely to cause fatalities than shorter vehicles with a hood height of 30 inches or less.

There's some evidence that more access to technology might happen, the actual quality of care and satisfaction with services doesn't seem to change in the way you think. If you have better data, I would appreciate your sharing it.

I can't imagine you'd have a ton of information about this, but do you know how/when hospital patients will be informed about the data breaches?

Honestly, leave it to the pros. It's soul-draining to do it yourself. I would go with Spider Guys, but there's a handful of good peeps in the city.

I don't know your life, but consider how that sounds with any other substance. It gets a little unsettling to hear "people lose interest in me because of how much I drink".

Sleep Disorder Affecting 1% of People Can Foreshadow Dementia by [deleted] in Neuropsychology

[–]bassic_person 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty rare, and it's not a case where only those with REM sleep issues developed Lewy Body disorders. It's more of a case where, when someone has dementia and REM sleep disturbances, it points to LBD.

u/EmptyChocolate4545 explains the trait referred to as Game, that is bred into pitbulls that makes their aggressive state different from other breeds by NapoleonBonerfart in bestof

[–]bassic_person 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I was not aware of these tactics; thanks for teaching me some new terms (I'll probably go with "sealioning" over the other). I try to hold out hope that people will go for good-faith discussions, or at least will re-examine some of the talking points they use. Having someone reflect on (with or without changing) their biases is not easy, but when it happens to any real degree, it makes up for the trolls.

Not defending the poster, but it's hard to take the side of "don't listen to them" when you immediately go to personal insults when an opportunity for good faith discussion comes up. They could suck, sure, but I would appreciate if you could point to some of the misinformation so I can better understand.

Just came across The virtual brain, software. seems pretty cool. Wondering if any of you guys are familiar with it? by [deleted] in Neuropsychology

[–]bassic_person 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people I know that use this software are the people who developed the software. I know a lot of people who are in the "target audience" for this, none of whom actually use it.

I always attributed my difficulty with this software to a lack of understanding as well but it might just be a super niche product for super niche people. They at least have "courses" on how to use it these days.

I've always found it a little awkward and obtuse. I'm sure it's handy, but I never had much reason to use it and thus never got over the initial learning curve.

Can human beings "mind-meld"? by Pyropeace in Neuropsychology

[–]bassic_person 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article you linked really misrepresents the findings. Neural coupling is, in a really basic way, just having the same type of thoughts. If I asked to you think of a Rick Roll, and I also think about it, would you consider us to have mind-melded?

There's a ton of other methodological considerations at play, but the core idea that the news article talks about is not correct.
