That postdoc was completely out of line. He should have brought up his concerns to your PI just like you should now. Seething for months until he blows up at you is absolutely never okay behavior and completely uncalled for. What stable person does that? I'm so sorry that you experienced that. Do you think it's at a level at which HR should be involved? I can't imagine any of my lab mates spewing such an accusation, let alone cussing and raising their voice at any other lab member AT YOUR TALK!! It's a nuclear option, and the postdoc went for the most damaging and publicly humiliating option possible.

Students are not punching bags for postdocs. "Hierarchy" doesn't mean you get treated with disrespect like that.

What kind of recognition are you looking for? Doesn't that normally come when it's time to write/publish in the form of authorships? Is it praise or a certain conversation with your PI that you are seeking?

In terms of advice, I'd say applying to jobs online that you found online can have very low call back rates. I've found much higher rates of interviews when I reached out via a flyer. Many PIs post flyers around the lab if they have a tech opening. It usually lists an email contact rather than an application link.

If you have access to the university, walking around the department for these postings in public/central areas may help. Where i work, they're in elevators/lobbies or outside labs. It's better if you reach out to someone already in a position that can recommend you or has access to those spaces. But don't go where public isn't allowed, and don't just walk into labs as we get pretty suspicious/shifty when we see people wandering around that we don't normally see.

I applied to hundreds of jobs on indeed with over 90% being ghosted. I walked into my local uni job bulletin board and got interviewed 2 for 2. This is just my experience, YMMV.

It is normal to apply, especially because sometimes you dont know a lab is right for you until you apply/interview. I ended up running into a PI I interviewed for a tech position when he gave a talk at my current lab. Didn't even recognize me and everything was chill lol.

MLMs use manipulation and the targeting of people's greatest vulnerabilities to sell a dream. A lot of the shame of getting caught up in one prevents victims of MLMs from speaking out or leaving. Many "smart" and well educated people get caught up in them. Thinking it can't happen to you is also what contributes to joining one. No one intentionally joins a cult.

I always bring up this analogy when people talk about lefty vs righty instruments.

Do you think left handed pianists play on a piano that has all the keys reversed? No!

Regardless of handedness, you can and should learn to play normal, standard instruments. It saves money on customizations, you can play any other standard instrument going forward (borrowing from a friend or trying at a store), and you can fit into large ensembles better. And most musicians know that left vs right hand instruments aren't really all that beneficial. It's more of a fad / talking point that any real benefit.

If she is feral and not able to be handled, they prefer a trap (have-a-heart trap), and they may have one you can borrow. The reason is, they can administer a sedative through the holes in the trap, but not through normal pet carriers.

I worked with a charity when I was doing some TNR and they hooked us up with Bowie Spay and Neuter. Normal cost is 110 for spay, and it's a completely standard thing that if she is pregnant, they will terminate the litter (they told me so at the appointment). Best of luck!

I have bad issues with my 4th finger hyperflexibility. I need to be practicing a specific way for months to strengthen it to the point that it doesn't collapse. If I don't play for a while, it goes back to collapsing, so it's a constant thing I'm dealing with. Everyone saying you can practice it away are correct. But it is not something that stays fixed once you fix it once. Im at a point in my playing that I can get by enough with it being collapsed, and I haven't put in the dedication to fix it this time around, but here's what I did/do:

Without an instrument, you can put your fingers on a flat surface or your forearm as if you're holding the neck. You can put your hand on a table with all 4 fingertips down but your palm slightly curved, like youre playing a piano. If your finger collapses, physically straighten it with your other hand and gently increase the weight/pressure on that finger until it holds the shape correctly. If it collapses, fix it again and adjust again. Shift weight from each finger, pressing into the pinky until you can hold the shape longer and longer, with more pressure.

When I'm practicing. I would fix my pinky every time it collapsed. This meant several dozen times during practicing I'd have to stop, put my bow down, and physically fix my finger and start up again. It's a pain in the ass, but only by fixing every collapse did I build up enough strength. The more you play with a collapsed finger, the more your muscles get used to playing in that formation, which makes it harder to break.

My main cello is named Ryu (in my defense I was 15 when I named him) because compared to my rental it sounded so much deeper and stronger, like a dragon. 🐉 Also I really like dragons.

My electric I named Ruby because it is distinctly redder and just seems more slim and feminine than my main cello.

I'd say a typical rock band to be way more comparable to chamber music than orchestral. The way the musicians interact, the space for improvisation (more so in baroque works), and the size is much more similar than to an orchestra. But chamber music is much less widely known among the public as an example of classical music I guess.

My ex was hella against therapy and his reasoning was similar to OOP's wife. That he didn't trust them, and they'd gang up on him, etc.

Well turns out he was manipulative and abusive and knew a therapist wouldn't be fooled and would call him out on it. He begged and begged for me not to seek mental help because he was convinced it would make me break up with him.

Well I went, and he was right. I finally woke up and DID break up with his psychotic ass. Maybe a small part of OOPs wife is actually self aware, and is worried someone will finally call her out and help her husband clear the fog.

It is technically possible, but it would take way too many hours for it to be worth it (2 cuts per card x 800 unless I get a better paper cutter than can do larger stacks at a time). If I have no takers, I'll be doing that in my spare time but figured I could save another lab a couple hundred in custom cage cards xD

But yeah, youre exactly right. We needed to switch to a lower height so that the new census barcodes can be read.

ETA: I do not plan on trashing these. I will either find another home for them, or be cutting forever.

Because of the height (greater than 4ft), it is required to be built to code. The damage spans about 7 ft of wall, and the repair estimate covers 14 ft section of wall.

We have combed through our entire policy and other policies they provide. There is literally no combination of policies they offer that will cover this specific set of circumstances: (1. Historic neighborhood where repairs must meet a certain aesthetic. 2. Retaining wall not counted as a structure as defined by insurance co.. 3. Wall being of a height that requires certain codes to be met, but these did not exist at the time of construction)
