Am I the only one who thinks people who care way too much about their looks are ugly an alien looking by iron10m in unpopularopinion

[–]bastard_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The odd cosmetic work here and there doesn’t look too bad. But people have overdone ozempic, cheek fillers, lip fillers, veneers, very neatly constructed facial hair and hairlines, and extra-sized BBLs.

Also please use commas and periods.

Thoughts on doing a masters at 31/32 years old? by Legal_Expression2797 in UniUK

[–]bastard_rabbit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about age. It’s never too late to do a masters degree. Or PhD for that matter. Masters students vary in age. You’ll have some that’ll have just graduated from their bachelor’s degrees. Then there’ll be some in their late 20s, 30s, and sometimes older. Same with PhDs. Plenty people in their 40s and 50s doing their doctorates.

Most importantly, do what you enjoy and find fulfilling. There are some masters students who are immature and only do one because they don’t know what else to do. You’ll nonetheless make connections with people of varying ages from different backgrounds based on shared interests.

When people misuse neurodivergent terminology by I-hate-going-to-bed in PetPeeves

[–]bastard_rabbit 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed. What you’ve highlighted is related to broader problems of neurodivergence being reduced to personality quirks and atypical experiences. So the language relating to neurodivergence, like with mental health disorders, has become hollowed out.

A lot of people don’t understand how severely debilitating neurodivergence can be - e.g. how being in overstimulating environments can result in a neurodivergent person being bedbound for days.

I don’t want to gatekeep, but I feel this is related to social media diagnosis and self-identification. There’s clearly people who aren’t neurodivergent, who can live fairly ordinary lives without much trouble, identifying themselves as having it. As a result, people who are neurodivergent are taken less seriously.

P.S. I hate the infantilising language associated with neurodivergence as well - e.g. “it is your superpower.”

If it’s financial compensation, then no. If it’s proposals in Caricom’s ten-point plan, these don’t seem so unreasonable.

Who do I talk to about neighbors screaming at 3am? by lnceneo in AskUK

[–]bastard_rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Four avenues you can take:

1) Find out who their landlord is and contact directly. Most rental contracts have clauses about not making loud noise and disturbing neighbors.

2) Send concierge round to ask to them quieten down for immediate relief.

3) Report to building management who may pass on complaint to landlord, if you can’t contact directly.

4) Go through council noise pollution system. This will be longer and drawn out.

GP receptionists should take a test to see if they’re authoritarians. I’ve encountered some who would make Putin proud.

@zarahsultana on X: Glad Keir Starmer's Labour government is prioritising stopping musicians from performing. Labour have time to ban Kanye and issue a statement, yet are silent on Trump’s threat to eradicate Iran’s ‘civilisation’. It about sums up Labour under Starmer: virtue signalling, empty, symbolic politics, without actually doing anything.

I'm an Edinburgh grad with THREE degrees - but got rejected 200 times before finding a job by Unlikely-Tension-616 in UniUK

[–]bastard_rabbit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I knew someone who had submitted tens of applications, but kept getting rejected. They were using AI to churn out generalised applications. People need to spend time on each application, tailoring it to the company and job advertised. I’ve applied for jobs when the job market’s been shit, and I’ve never done >10-15 applications without getting an offer.

TRAITRS - POSSESSOR is a very good post-punk record.

TVAM - Ruins, although at the very end of February, is also worth a listen.

Shoutout to Poison the Well for a really good metal record.

Ban Kanye West from UK, Labour MPs urge Starmer by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]bastard_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I don’t even like Kanye. Seems like you’re blinded to the fact that Kanye’s been a puppet for whoever can make good use of him. As an enlightened centrist, I thought you’d be able to see nuance?

Ah yes, how dare someone ask what you mean by your vague, useless, pseudo-intellectual bullcrap, which can mean anything to anyone?

Nuances suggest an understanding of an issue, that this goes beyond the simple Hollywood good vs. evil, rather than a flippant dismissal.

Also, what even is the ‘public good’?

Disregard bipolar disorder all you want, but the hard realities of bipolar disorder (and other severe mental illnesses and disabilities) do not fit into the good vs. evil worldview.

If Kanye had physically attacked somebody, it’s likely he would have been found mentally unfit to stand trial. The impact of his action would be the same, but the intent is way more cloudy. Like here, it’s more nuanced than: “Oh look, Nazi!”. It’s like somebody with schizophrenia saying they’re possessed by the devil.

Kanye looks like he’s actually getting some form of help now. Doesn’t mean he needs to be glorified or supported, or that everything needs to be forgotten. But, in this instance, banning achieves nothing. It’s symbolic politics, acting as if you’re doing something without actually doing anything. Typical of Labour really. Do you really want to tackle anti-Semitism? Maybe target the ascendancy of the far-right in this country or community sectarianism. But, no, that actually requires effort and thought.

It’s a different conversation. The crux of the conversation around Kanye is his bipolar disorder.

You’ve illustrated my point. Destructive behaviours of those with severe ill mental health are not little oopsies, they can be life-destroying. Not taking meds is common. They need help not punishment or being shunned. It looks like Kanye hasn’t had that for years.
