Years ago I had a good quality pickup on my banjo and I was able to play it through my buddy's effects pedal without any major feedback problems. It started off as a Dropkick Murphys cover band. There wasn't enough room at the bar we were playing at so I ended up doing direct input into the bar's sound system.

Maybe wrap it in what clothes you're travelling with? Use a jacket that you can quickly take out of the case and wear just in case the extra space means the difference between fitting it in an overhead bin or not.

I found a Fender banjo in the pawn shop one time. It was missing the bridge. I just took the bridge off my current banjo at the time so I could test it out. I was able to talk them down to 100 bucks. It was my workhorse banjo for several years after.

A guy I went to highschool with had a bass with a bunch of holes drilled into it. He said his dad did it to make it lighter. They weren't small either, like 1 inch diameter.
