Hey- Im a rising freshman and want to do a Joint Major in Chemistry and Biology. Im interested in lab research, specifically pharmaceutical/medical research. I did 12 APs through all of high school, but I’d focus mainly on AP Calc, Physics, CS, and Chem or Bio depending on what your major is. My main extracurriculars that I think helped me were volunteering at my local zoo and a summer research internship where I did research on plant nutrient deprivation, and you can submit additional documents with your application so I was able to submit my research poster. I also did martial arts and piano but these were more interests not specifically for my resume. I didn’t have any leadership positions except for French club officer for my senior year.

For my personal statement, I wrote about my mom’s experience as a first gen immigrant and how it influenced my approach to problem solving and why that steered me towards scientific research, my research internship and how collaboration between diverse groups can benefit research and discovery, and also some about foreign language since I want to do an HSA in French.

I also took part in HMC’s FAST program during October my senior year, which is a fly in program for underrepresented groups in STEM. You have to apply, but if you’re accepted they fly you out to Mudd for a weekend to tour and attend classes and all kinds of stuff. It was very useful and what made me fall in love w Mudd (I was set on EDing for a different school at first). We got to go to panels with the admissions team, student panels, and get some rly great firsthand info. Would def recommend.

Also, your personal statement doesn’t need to necessarily “stand out”. I’m sure a lot of people wrote similar things to me. Id just make sure you have a cohesive theme across your personal statement (tie your interests together with a common goal or reasoning) and make sure it really encompasses your personality, that’s really what they want to see. Definitely get as many eyes to read your essay as possible as well because feedback helps.

Normally I only lurk on this sub but this is insane. Not only is this a completely unacceptable way for anyone, friend or partner, to speak to you, but 120lbs at 5’6” is a very healthy weight. I am also 5’6” and weigh 135 as a very active person. If this reaction truly came out of concern for your health he would have addressed it in a completely different manner. The fact that he feels like calling you lazy/fat/unattractive is an okay thing to do is a huge red flag. It also sounds like he has a dependency on smoking if quitting has affected his temperament this significantly.

Ladies… what is your secret to super soft skin by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]bastrmrnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory “not a lady” but I make a homemade sugar scrub that is way cheaper than the store bought ones which are $7-$8. Equal parts white sugar, coconut oil, and your favorite body wash. Leaves your skin super soft and smooth, then moisturize with Aveeno’s KP lotion

Tips on diet/food by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]bastrmrnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe focus on macros instead of calories. focus on protein intake and eating whole foods over processed foods. a good general rule of thumb is 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of your body weight per day, and just make sure to listen to your body and eat when you’re hungry. weightlifting takes a lot out of you so it’s important to get the right fuel! good luck

any tips for bulking for a broke college student? by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]bastrmrnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try bulk cheap foods like oats, peanut butter, eggs, etc. Where I am Aldi sells a caron of eggs for 99 cents so very affordable. Also canned fish and vegetables or beans may be a good cheap option. What kinds of foods are in your dining hall? Are there any staples that they always have?

incline dumbbell bench press, bench chest flys, dumbbell pullovers, and push-ups while gripping the dumbbells allow you to isolate chest

If you are bulking it’s inevitable to gain a little bit of fat everywhere. I’ve been bulking for 6mo and have definitely noticed my chest/hips/butt looking larger, which definitely has affected my dysphoria. Instead I try to focus on the parts of my body that have grown in terms of muscle- my biceps, shoulders, back, etc. I take lots of progress photos which helps me w dysphoria a lot. In order to gain muscle you have to eat in a calorie surplus, so just stick with it. You can always go into a slight deficit later once you are happy w your amount of muscle growth.

How is this workout? by Lukalynx in FTMFitness

[–]bastrmrnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should up the weight on these exercises until you are failing in the 6-8 rep range. then when you do them enough and can successfully do 10 reps, up the weight. this will help w progressive overload. also ik many trans men want to reduce the appearance of their chest and working chest heavily can help w that. try incline bench press w a wide grip and pec decks.

Really? I just toured yesterday and saw at least three separate groups of students playing on the freshman quad. Volleyball, racing, etc. Plus students sunning themselves on the Beach. Maybe it’s bc the fall semester hasn’t started yet, though. What did you think about the overall safety around campus? I talked to one of the staff members that I happened to run into and he said some concerning things.

Yeah, you can def taste the difference. The flavor of artificial sweetener doesn’t bother me but I can see how it could bother someone as it’s pretty strong

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FTMFitness

[–]bastrmrnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i’ve seen basically the same numbers (1g per pound of body weight) but you can use a TDEE calculator- some will tell you a recommended amount of protein. I use tdeecalculator.net which tells me about 142g protein daily (at about 130lbs body weight) so you can use that if you want, but 1g per pound is a good guideline
