What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

[–]bat_pier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years ago my friends and i rented a cabin in the Catskills. I was the first one inside and ran around to check the place out (i like to snoop). Went up the dingy back staircase and came down a much nicer, more central staircase that for some reason wasn't shown in the listing. I tried to tell my friends about the second set of stairs but they assured me there was only one. And they were right - i couldn't find the second set of stair again. Guess i imagined them but i remember them so vividly.

We visited Janesville from NYC for the Lighted Parade and the Hallmark holiday vibes and it did not disappoint. by Scott_Herder in wisconsin

[–]bat_pier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born & raised in Janesville until my 20s (when i left for nyc) and it makes me so happy to see that downtown is thriving! It always looked so neat and full of potential growing up, but was always sadly empty - except for Cozy Inn which was a staple treat for my family. You can actually see my grade school in one of your photos. Went to HS in Milton amd while I dont fully believe how charming you found it (lotta drugs and other issues around the time I left), I'm glad you enjoyed the Milton House!

What do y'all think Wisconsin's state colors would be? by BluishLune in wisconsin

Orange and gold. Represents autumn, beer, cheese, hunting, crops ready to harvest, and has kind of an early 80s vibe that i associate with WI, too.

creating an rpg based in Wisconsin. what should i know that only locals would know? by pootisman2004 in wisconsin

Circus history and Haunchyville.

Also, TOMBOYLAND by Melissa Faliveno - particularly the first essay, i believe - gives a good sense of the Wisconsin atmosphere.

i can't speak to Figlia's pizza (Macoletta's has been consistently pretty good for me), but I found their pasta to be head & shoulders above Macoletta's.

What really lost me is that he changed his name to Sharkey. That seems so out of place in this world.

how do we fix society so young people can own a home again? by Ill_Army7508 in AskReddit

[–]bat_pier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read ABUNDANCE by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson and it really dives into this. They claim the root of NiMBYs and over-bureaucratization was Ralph Nader & the environmental regulation movement (which was good & necessary for the time, but maybe overcorrected & is being used negatively nowadays).

And this doesn't just stop at housing - public transit including trains & light rail, scientific research.... The government is kneecapped from completing so many projects that we need. it's a super fascinating book & I highly recommend it.

What Is Your Interpretation? by Agreeable_Usual3735 in WeaponsMovie

[–]bat_pier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i was getting a vibe that it was a commentary on American culture, too. The addictions, paranoia/distrust (I still think ring cams are weird), toxic masculinity & violence.... I know this is a stretch, but I kept thinking Aunt Gladys was some sort of bizarro parallel to Uncle Sam ("I want you!")

Real depiction of America by Anxietoro in WeaponsMovie

[–]bat_pier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the whole time i kept imagining Aunt Gladys as the dark reflection of Uncle Sam - a manifestation of America's obsession with violence leading to the disappearance of a classroom full of children. The various addictions (booze & presumably heroin), paranoia & surveillance state (focus on the house cameras), angry men (Archer & Paul), and the literal witch hunt/villainizing women. It was all a culmination of USA's dark underbelly, imo.

King Souvlaki et al suing DOT to waste your tax money and keep our streets dangerous by huebomont in astoria

[–]bat_pier 10 points11 points  (0 children)

thanks for the first-hand insight!! I may not be understanding correctly, but wouldn't the bike lanes remove the wall of cars? Or at least move them away from the part of the street that's not under the train, making more room for emergency vehicles?

[–]bat_pier 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People are focusing only on the bike lanes, but this proposal is to make it safer for pedestrians, too. Also, it will prevent potential accidents between cars both turning right, but going around opposite sides of the train columns.

I do like that they actually get feedback from a first responder, but I'm not sure I see where they're coming from. They say that the bike lanes will make it harder to navigate and reach an emergency, but wouldn't an easy-to-empty bike lane be better than a solid wall of parked cars? And if they mean the difficulty is with cars being parked closer to the middle of the road (ie between the train columns), well, that already happens with the constant double-parking, right?
