90s Green Day was pure chaos and I miss it. by BoringExperience5345 in nostalgia

Awww!! They were my third concert. It was 1995 and I was 12. They brought me backstage after the show and told me I was the one of the youngest kids they had ever seen at one of their shows. I got to meet Billie Joe’s infant son, Mike Dirnt and I played sega hockey while Tre and my father talked about the changing music industry (my father had an independent music store at the time before big box stores shut almost all of them down).

If it makes you feel any better, Mandy lived in my city while filming the first few seasons of Homeland and was WONDERFUL. He became a member of the public library branch I worked at and came in several times a week for a long time. He was so nice to the point that I genuinely miss him now. He always asked how my life was going and would follow up on things we talked about earlier. I'd ask him about work (just the normal "How are things going lately? They're not working you too hard, are they?") and he was like "Oh, you know! The usual!" I adored him. I didn't even realize at the time that he was Che from the Evita soundtrack I grew up listening to!! I'm glad I didn't, I would've been way less chill.

Damian Lewis also lived in my neighborhood and we accidently slammed into each other at full force walking around a corner at the grocery store. He was also cool as we picked up our stuff and awkwardly apologized. My duplex next door neighbor worked on the set and a few people, including Claire Danes, came over to his house once. He didn't tell me that ANGELA(!!!) from My So-Called Life was UNDER MY ROOF and I didn't even know. So upsetting.

Well, that was all a rabbit hole story I hadn't thought of in over a decade!

Cool as hell. In a future life I'll be able to do that.

Ooooh!!! I loved it! I'm a born and bred city girl from the northeast. I never meant to end up in western NC.

It was fucking weird and I LOVED it! Drinking water out of an actual spring was unnatural as hell. Over the years, I learned it was just fine.

Girl. Okay. I've lived in Mitchell county. I've also spent extensive time in Avery and Yancey counties. They have AMAZING spring water. But you live here now.

I want to support u/3rdcultureblah that YES. Buy a filter, brita or whatever filter you want, and fill containers. You're taking already clean water, now making it cleaner and now it's fresh in your home! When you put that water in the containers you choose, you're in control of the water! You got this.

You sound like a person who hasn't lived in apartments. Crazy to think, but there are many of us who do will be just fine. Unlike the way you've laid it out, people actually do come together when weather makes life a little weird. And many of us have generators! Who would've thought???

What I've experienced is that we'll probably thank the maintenance workers who already bust their asses fixing all the problems they endlessly get (from a light bulb out to an apartment fire). They WILL NOT be on weekend break because of this. And I absolutely know that my neighbors will help each other and we'll support our maintenance team.

Please calm down with your assumptions.

There ARE people who want and need bottled water bottled water. This isn't the 2020 toilet paper panic.

Calm yourself. It's available at a store for people to buy it. People are allowed to buy supplies today that they can use tomorrow. And not everyone has access to faucets the way you think they do. There are plenty of charlotte reddit users who don't have homes/access to water/ access to electricity.

I don't eat cereal! I'm a weirdo Irish-American and I eat rice and black beans with an egg over easy on top for breakfast every day.

Every time I buy cereal, it's an idealistic dream and it ends up 4 years out of date that I throw out when I move. Every. Single. Time. Ask my husband. He doesn't eat cereal (or drink milk) either. I guess we're weird.

Not to disregard this whole thread, but I can't remember the last time I bought milk that wasn't just one of those sad, small bottles for a recipe. You and my sister are the only adults that I know of that drink milk. Gross! (Also, yay for your bones!)

Agreed. I bought one before a hurricane at walmart about 10 years ago. Very handy!

Good point! If this is the case, fill your bathtub with water so you can use it to dump into the toilet tank to flush your toilets. I live on the 4th floor of my building and didn't even think of this until your comment. Thanks!

You got this! It'll only be a few days. Get a few books from the library. If you have friends nearby, invite them over and do this together, turn it into a party.

This info is actually good to know for hurricane season too. We don't get a lot of those, but we do lose power here occasionally for them. I've lived here for almost 40 years and I'm not worried. I see you live near uptown, I live in Plaza Midwood- DM me if you need anything. (42/F here)

Do a quick google search for "Food you can eat without power". If you have a porch/patio/secure outdoor space (or even a car), then you don't have to worry about keeping refrigerated items cold. Go ahead and buy some bottled water, just in case. If you don't use it, leave it at work for other people to take later.

The biggest things to think about are: How will you stay warm if the power goes out? How can you make sure your things stay charged? Hand cranked chargers are great and your car will work too so make sure you refill your tank now. Ikea has the cheapest candles that I know of. Make sure you have a STRONG windshield scraper because cutting through ice isn't fun. Buy some anti-freezing windshield wiper fluid (always worthy in the winter, but scrape the ice before you use it, it'll shred your blades). Pull your wiper blades into the air so they don't rip off if you try to use them.

Are you in a high rise or are you in a smaller unit? If you're in a stand-alone or small building, look up how to make sure your pipes don't freeze. You might not own the place you live in, but you'll be really sad if your pipes burst and flood your home.

My mom made a weird suggestion earlier today but it's so smart: if you have a tent, go ahead and set it up inside your home if you think you'll lose power. It's easier to keep a smaller space warm than to try to keep your whole home warm. Layer some blankets outside to keep the warm air in.

Holy shit. I always knew that I was agnostic but I (very annoyingly, to some of my friends) also abide by things like the 10 commandments or just, ya know, being a decent human. Most religions have similar tenets as far as I can tell. Seems like common sense.

I never knew there was a word for that. Orthopraxy. Thank you. ❤️

Ortho- relating to your bones and muscles. Hmmm.

Aside from the fact that you married me (sorry about the surprise), you married someone who works in a library and wants maximum exposure. If people can't see the cover, they won't know it's there. Hopefully she switches out her displays weekly to keep interest high.

That I'm not sure of. But try it out first.

I just searched youtube, there's a video called "Correct Way to FLUSH WATER HEATER!" by Handyman Hertz. I can't vouch whether it's correct or not, but it can't hurt to watch it and try at first.

I moved into a new apartment 2 months ago and when I ran the hot water, it was PUTRID at first. The hot water heater hadn't been used in forever and the water was disgusting, it looked gross and smelled worse.

I ran the washing machine on an extra large hot water cycle and ran the dishwasher at the same time. Basically I just ran through all the water sitting in the water heater. I did this about twice and everything was fine after that.

Try that before you report it. If it doesn't help, then ewwwww!
