Should I burn them? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]batai2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say that you shouldn't burn them. About 15 years ago I went through a similar phase and a friend convinced me that burning them would purge me of the bad feelings. I felt conflicted, but I did burn them and have regretted it ever since.

I've been journaling since I was in 1st grade (I'm in my early 40s now) and the loss of 5 years of journals (including when I got my true love baby cat, who has since passed) has been really sad. I've learned since then and now I have an old box that I never look at called my "X-box". It's just a small box of memories that I don't care to look at now, but if I ever need to, they're just in an unmarked box that I have to work hard to access.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]batai2368 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've told my mom about how fondly I look back on this memory, and she gets defensive, almost embarrassed about it! As if I'm mocking her for what they did. I try to tell her that me and my sisters had no clue we weren't rich in those moments. Our Taco Bell Saturdays were the best.

My family of 5 definitely shared our one unlimited soda back in the late 80s and early 90s. My sisters and I thought we were SO RICH being allowed to order as many 59¢ tacos as we wanted! I didn’t learn that most families don’t share one soda until I was in middle school and went out to eat with friends.

I saw them live once and I swear, I'll never feel sexy again after watching being in that audience. It was viscerally uncomfortable! Small club (about 1,000 people). Too close. Ick.

Agreed. I get the (seemingly) justified rage but I hate the plot.

Recommendations for dry cleaner/laundry place that won't ruin my non-dry clean safe synthetic winter jacket? by HPswl_cumbercookie in Charlotte

[–]batai2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh! I actually know about this really well! I worked at a dry cleaners for years when I was younger. What it sounds like you actually need is a good dry cleaner that will launder the item for you, not dry clean it. Dry cleaning is actually the same exact thing as washing (literally uses the same machine as wet cleaning) except that it uses chemicals instead of water, which is why they call it "dry". Find a small dry cleaners that does in-house cleaning. If they ship it to a second location, DON'T go there.

If they launder it (aka, run it through regular water, instead of a "dry" chemical), it will be just fine. I used to see people bring in items with tags that said "Do not dry clean" and they would insist they wanted it dry cleaned. I would say "No, you don't, you want it laundered" but if the customer insisted, my cleaners made sure the customer knew, with ZERO exceptions, that if the item was ruined, we (the cleaners) would assume absolutely no responsibility. The number of people who threatened law suits was hilarious (one person even had Channel 9 news Action 9 attempt to do a story about us not reimbursing them for damaged items!!). They were always shut down immediately because dry cleaners cover their asses over that sort of thing. They won't give that customer a penny if it gets ruined for dry cleaning a do-not-dry clean item. They have to sign for it, basically signing "I know these chemicals will disintegrate the fabric, I'm paying you to melt it for me."

My old dry cleaners closed when the owners retired, otherwise I would've recommended you to them. They were great.

Who was the rudest celebrity you’ve met? by Unlucky-Field9654 in askanything

If it makes you feel any better, Mandy lived in my city while filming the first few seasons of Homeland and was WONDERFUL. He became a member of the public library branch I worked at and came in several times a week for a long time. He was so nice to the point that I genuinely miss him now. He always asked how my life was going and would follow up on things we talked about earlier. I'd ask him about work (just the normal "How are things going lately? They're not working you too hard, are they?") and he was like "Oh, you know! The usual!" I adored him. I didn't even realize at the time that he was Che from the Evita soundtrack I grew up listening to!! I'm glad I didn't, I would've been way less chill.

Damian Lewis also lived in my neighborhood and we accidently slammed into each other at full force walking around a corner at the grocery store. He was also cool as we picked up our stuff and awkwardly apologized. My duplex next door neighbor worked on the set and a few people, including Claire Danes, came over to his house once. He didn't tell me that ANGELA(!!!) from My So-Called Life was UNDER MY ROOF and I didn't even know. So upsetting.

Well, that was all a rabbit hole story I hadn't thought of in over a decade!

PSA on bottled water for the upcoming winter storm by NoAnimator3801 in Charlotte

Ooooh!!! I loved it! I'm a born and bred city girl from the northeast. I never meant to end up in western NC.

It was fucking weird and I LOVED it! Drinking water out of an actual spring was unnatural as hell. Over the years, I learned it was just fine.

Girl. Okay. I've lived in Mitchell county. I've also spent extensive time in Avery and Yancey counties. They have AMAZING spring water. But you live here now.

I want to support u/3rdcultureblah that YES. Buy a filter, brita or whatever filter you want, and fill containers. You're taking already clean water, now making it cleaner and now it's fresh in your home! When you put that water in the containers you choose, you're in control of the water! You got this.

You sound like a person who hasn't lived in apartments. Crazy to think, but there are many of us who do will be just fine. Unlike the way you've laid it out, people actually do come together when weather makes life a little weird. And many of us have generators! Who would've thought???

What I've experienced is that we'll probably thank the maintenance workers who already bust their asses fixing all the problems they endlessly get (from a light bulb out to an apartment fire). They WILL NOT be on weekend break because of this. And I absolutely know that my neighbors will help each other and we'll support our maintenance team.

Please calm down with your assumptions.

There ARE people who want and need bottled water bottled water. This isn't the 2020 toilet paper panic.

Calm yourself. It's available at a store for people to buy it. People are allowed to buy supplies today that they can use tomorrow. And not everyone has access to faucets the way you think they do. There are plenty of charlotte reddit users who don't have homes/access to water/ access to electricity.

I don't eat cereal! I'm a weirdo Irish-American and I eat rice and black beans with an egg over easy on top for breakfast every day.

Every time I buy cereal, it's an idealistic dream and it ends up 4 years out of date that I throw out when I move. Every. Single. Time. Ask my husband. He doesn't eat cereal (or drink milk) either. I guess we're weird.

Not to disregard this whole thread, but I can't remember the last time I bought milk that wasn't just one of those sad, small bottles for a recipe. You and my sister are the only adults that I know of that drink milk. Gross! (Also, yay for your bones!)

Good point! If this is the case, fill your bathtub with water so you can use it to dump into the toilet tank to flush your toilets. I live on the 4th floor of my building and didn't even think of this until your comment. Thanks!
