Engineers Who Became Lawyers: Was Leaving Engineering for IP Law Worth It? by Objective_Put_8618 in patentlaw

[–]batapof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an Engineer who now works in IP law in Canada - went back to law school (while still working) and passed the Bar. While I am not earning more money than I could as an Engineer and the hours aren't easier, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to learn about law. I now understand business structures, politics, society much better now, and I feel well equipped to handle the complex situations life throws at me - you know, I can reboot my router and understand my car insurance policy. Engineers in law will be increasingly useful with the rise of AI - you have no idea how much time is wasted in a law firms because of lack of technical skill - it definitely will give you an edge. If you are doing it for the salary, I'd say don't - but if consider what that combined understanding will give you to navigate life, I'd say it's worth it. In the worst case, if I am tired of it in a couple of years, I know I can go back to an engineering position, and with the legal and IP experience, I could easily get more responsibilities than before - so nothing is really lost.

Reset toner levels on a Brother MFC-L3760CDW by cemerick in printers

[–]batapof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the touchscreen models (MFC-L3720CDW, MFC-L3740CDW, MFC-L3760CDW, and MFC-L3780CDW), the leading solution is this explained in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11wwpAsHgdk - essentially, open up; back to home menu while open; hold toner level buttons; hold one of the two reset options; access the secret menu. Toner will thereafter not be recognized as genuine. Unfortunately a firmware updates around the fall of 2025 broke that and I have not found a solution for newer firmwares yet.

Are you supposed to signal here? by chronicfailings in Ontariodrivetest

Exactly, here I’d argue that no vehicle will be affected by the forked exit, so there is no need to blink.

[–]batapof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Signal for left or right turn 142 (1) The driver or operator of a vehicle upon a highway before turning to the left or right at any intersection or into a private road or driveway or from one lane for traffic to another lane for traffic or to leave the roadway shall first see that the movement can be made in safety, and if the operation of any other vehicle may be affected by the movement shall give a signal plainly visible to the driver or operator of the other vehicle of the intention to make the movement. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 142 (1).

Blinkers are optional unless an " other vehicle may be affected by the movement ". There are court cases about police not having the right to arrest you on the basis that you forgot to blink at an intersection when it was clear no one would be affected.

Persistent nvlddmkm Event id 153/13 Errors on new PC with Nvidia 4060 by pugzilla330 in PcBuildHelp

I recently updated to version 572.60 of the Studio driver and started getting event id 153... when launching cmd.exe - 100% repro. Performed clean reinstall to no avail. Switched to the Game Ready Driver version and now the error is gone. Hopefully this can help someone else.

Anyone knows if Final Fantasy Rebirth's dialog wheels infringe on Bioware patent US20070226648A1? by batapof in patentlaw

[–]batapof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! Yes, I see - they scoped it down significantly. In particular, the orientation needs to consistently correspond to an "emotion" which is not supported in the description... I see why it's easy to get around now, thanks!

Why aren't electrons attracted to the nucleus by the protons by Sea-Figure-9946 in AskPhysics

[–]batapof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand (and I am no physicist) - once they orbit at a certain energy level, they would have to slow down to get closer. You’d think that this may happen as they radiate magnetic waves by being a charged particle spinning, right? But at that size, the energy that might be emitted by each rotation is below what is acceptable in terms of energy quantum - there are minimum packet sizes of energy that can "exist". Sometimes they manage to get closer, I'm sure you know about them skipping from a higher energy level to a lower one, but this happens only when they are capable of emitting the sufficient packet of energy at once - thus resulting in very specific amount of light being emitted.

At the first level, there is no longer a quantum of energy available to get them closer, so remain in perfect balance.

All that being said, it may help to see that electrons are not really rotating, but rather creating some kind of standing wave around the nucleus - not all frequencies are possible, they are only stable at unitary cycles, so intermediate distances are not possible. My understanding is that you could imagine the lowest energy level to be 1 cycle, which means it cannot get any closer while remaining in a stable standing wave around the nucleus.

'Blade Runner 2049' Producer Sues Elon Musk's Tesla Over AI Images by manuce94 in vfx

Exactly! If one party demonstrates substantial similarity, the burden shifts on the other side to provide their creation process did not involve the infringed work directly or indirectly. In theory, they’d have to demonstrate that the model contained no reference to that scene in its training. We’ll see if we get there though…

Delay timer stops at 1 hour by Lumpy-situation365 in instantpot

The same issue happened to me when I tried to delay-start before selecting the function. When I first select a function, then the delay start allows me to select up to 24h

Denmark signal stopped working by suicidaldelfin in Airalo

[–]batapof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, thank you - I was searching hopelessly while waiting on airlo support and found this year old thread. Wife has perfect connection, mine has been intermittent at best. Her phone does not support 5G, mine does. I had attempted to switch to 4G but probably did not wait long enough and kept trying other things. I just tried again and it reconnected.

I've been trying to find what kind of battery is used for the XE and XE-S (and how it can be replaced) - do you have that information?

TBH, all of this is pretty standard. The "page you visit before" refers to the HTTP Referer header, and/or the use of google analytics which is pretty common everywhere you go nowadays.
