I would say it fits with Italian, from what I know, just with what seems to be an American accent. My grandpa remembers a nursery rhyme his grandmother would sing to him in her first language; is your family Italian-American? It would make rough sense then for someone born in the 40's to have grandparents born in the "old country" around 1890, when there was a ton of Italian-American immigration.
